Basically for the past month I have been without sound to my computer, and I was fine with it. Well 2 days ago I put in my new water cooling kit, and just was thinking, if I want my computer done (which will never be the case), I need everything to work. I have been messing around trying to fix the sound problem and nothing will work. So, as anyone would, I have been getting pretty ticked off. Been looking around these forums and thought maybe one of you could help me. (BTW, nice work to all of you for what you can do, I might post up some projects in the near future.)
So if I need drivers...

Where can I find em???
I just don't understand how my sound can just die off like that. It only started happening once I put in my video card. But I don't think that can be the problem... Can it?
Specs are:
Intel D945GPM motherboard
Intel Pentium D 3.00ghz Engineering sample CPU
Powercolor Radeon HD2600 pro
Creative SB LIVE!
2GB (2x1gb) Kingston 800mhz RAM
1 WD 80gb SATA HDD
1 WD 200gb IDE HDD
575w PSU

Uninstall all your drivers and reinstall them.

I tried that but it still didn't work.

I would turn the computer off, and remove the Creative SB Live card. Let it boot up without it.
Then reinstall the card and let windows try to find drivers for it. Install them from CD or otherwise.
I would also check to make sure my 1/4" Plug was in the Green slot.
If all else fails buy another sound card.
You can replace with the same model for $11.00-$32.00

Did you unplug the speakers and plug them back in? I know that with my realtek integrated HD audio, it asks me what I just plugged in, regardless of what color the plug is.

Ok, so I've tried the uninstalling it method. New drivers method. Replacing method. Tried the on-board sound, that didn't work either. I am really getting ticked off here. I don't want to have to uninstall the thing again, I just finished my water cooling, and those darn tubes get in the way.

You may not have the onboard audio enabled in the bios.
Check it out . .may be under advanced features.
Have you tried the sound card in a different slot?
I would just buy a new sound card. You can get one at newegg for 10 bucks.

I don't think that that's the case, since windows apparently sees it.

Windows recognizes on board and the SBLIVE. I will try the on board in BIOS in a little bit.

cant find anything of the nature in BIOS at all. Any other help? It started when I put the HD2600 in. And it says my "current sound devide" is "HD rear audio"... From the video card... Any other suggestions?

Ha ha! i think i've got it!
OK, the graphics card is HD for use with the HDMI cables and such. ATI carries sound through the video card to output with the HDMI cable so you dont need to run multiple cords. Since this happened when you installed the videocard its clearly that the videocard stole the sound output.
Go to Control Panel and open the Sounds and Audio Devices. Click on the audio/voice tabs and set the output device to your sound card. The videocard drivers set it to "ATI HD Audio Rear Output" while installing.
Try that, let me know :P

Had the SBLive card out since I wasn't using it. The onboard IDT sound drivers will not install. And now that I install the SBLive into the system, Windows cannot see it.
The onboard installation looks like this...

Anyone else have any ideas?

you should have your antivirus and antispyware software turned off while installing drivers.
Did you turn off the onboard sound in your BIOS and forget to turn them back on? You would get that "no device found" error message if it was off.

Or it could be something with the OS. A simple thing you can do is DL ubuntu linux or something then boot it from the CD. You wouldn't have to install it and if it is a windows related issue then you'd know right away.

I might try that.

The ISO for Ubuntu is almost a gigabyte though. But I'm gonna put it on my new machine when I build it.

I am going to do a re-install of XP tonight after I get paid for working on my friends computer.
