I looked at the list of the different versions of Xp on newegg. Im confused on which to buy for my new computer. I'm pretty settled on Xp.

What's confusing you? XP Home is basic XP. Media Center Edition is XP Pro with added media features. XP Pro is stupid (actually, I just don't know what makes it different). XP Pro 64-bit is the only 64-bit.

If you need XP, get Home Edition. Otherwise, seriously just get Vista. Microsoft is really done with XP. Support will be out until 2014 but honestly, it's over. It's on it's last few breaths.

You can only connect to xp pro with remote desktop, and pro is also needed for more advanced networking stuff. That's why schools and businesses have to buy pro.

Well, some say system builders, others say upgrade. I might take your advice and get VISTA (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116485). But i dont know if all my hardware is compatible.

System builders: is OEM meaning you get a CD in a sleeve and a product key sticker

Upgrade: You wont be able to install this one unless there is allready a previous version of windows installed on the machine. ie; win98, mellenium, win2000.

Just so you know, they are cheaper then a full retail version of XP which includes a fancy box and lots of papers/brochures.

XP Pro > XP/Vista home. Advanced networking properties, greater ability to administer the system.

If you buy a Vista upgrade, you need to run it from within a XP install.

Onboard (is that what =( means? :D) video and one gig of RAM says that you're probably best off with XP (I'd go with Media Center OEM non-upgrade unless you have a 2K/ME/98 disc around), though Vista would probably do okay without the pretty stuff (Aero, Ctrl-Tab, etc).

Yes, =( means onboard, but that is for my old computer, not my new one. The only problem I saw was that the Radeon HD 3650 drivers had trouble in vista, but thats about it.

XP will no longer be sold as of tomorrow (could change). I know of TONS of people who prefer it over Vista, but it's still done with. Microsoft is now shifting all focus to Vista.

And it looks like everyone else pretty much got this. System Builders is OEM and is good for a single install, Upgrade requires a previous version of Windows, Retail is good for I think 3 installs and has a fancy box.

Last I heard most of ATI's drivers were lack-luster. Give it a month or two and I'm sure they'll get better.

So Vista it is, hopefully.

I don't think vista is too bad, and with my current hardware, it would probably run ok. The only thing that I'm concerned about at this point, is compatibility. But then, there's VMware for that.

Should I go 32bit or 64 bit?

I'd say 64. Do you have any unsigned drivers? If so, you won't be able to watch movies from blu-ray DVDs in HD in vista 64.

I'll just use my ps3 for blu-rays. But I don't know about unsigned drivers...

If you allow it to use unsigned drivers, it downconverts the HD movies, but since you use the PS3 for the blu-ray, it won't affect you.

If you run it firsthand on a computer that is actually good enough to run it, you will probably find that it's not too bad. It does take some getting used to, though.
