Ok I have a usb ya cable that came with an external hdd that i bought.one port is for data and the other one is power if you do nto have usb 2.0. I need to make another cable for it that is much smaller and I need to keep the original cable. So here is the question can I take 2 cables splice them together at one end so they match like the original cable or do I only use the yellow and black cable sout of the device for power.

If it's just for power, only use the +5, or whatever it is, and the black. If you connect the data one, it would mess it up.

If you do need more power, just make sure that you plug the two different plugs into two different sets of ports.
