I may be using it wrong but I very rarely have any reason not to run mine full bore. (Whatever RPM that is) :D

RPM is less important when you're using the correct cutting disks for the job. You don't need to rip that thing out at 35K rpm if you have a Diamond cutting wheel or a Reinforced cutting disk. If you're cutting metal with a Dremel get one of those wheels or if you're cutting plexi use whatever you have (lower RPM and slower movements. It'll melt and fuse itself back otherwise).

I run my Dremel 800 cordless at about number "2" on the speed dial [approx. 5,000rpm to 10,000rpm] for acrylic, making short cuts with pauses to let the cut and the cutter cool down.

I cut aluminum at various speeds depending on the thickness of the Alum [I usually only have occasion to work on thicknesses from 1 to 3 mm] and I cut and grind at speeds of from 12,000 to 24,000 rpm and drill at full speed [35,000 rpm].

The best way to find out what's best for your situation is to practice on a scrap piece of the same material you're about to cut, grind, or drill. I never cut into my case without practicing the operation on a scrap piece first.

Hope this helps ;-]
