View Full Version : Are SD cards at the point yet where they don't wear out quickly?

I want to install Windows XP on a 16 GB SDHC memory card in my eeePC as a second OS to Ubuntu, because Ubuntu basically went "numnumnum!" and ate all the space.

I remember hearing though that SSDs are different from SD and Compact Flash in the sense that they can handle a heavy load of write cycles. I think I also heard lately that SD and Compact Flash have gotten to the point where they can handle so many write cycles that they would probably go obsolete before you would ever achieve burning them out.

Can anybody verify this? I don't want to go buy a 16 GB SDHC card and be all like "woo xp!", and then have it burn out in a month. I know OSes like to write a lot ;)

Thanks!

If you have a swap file, be prepared to burn out your SD card. However, it will work.

Would Windows be able to run alright on an eeePC (900Mhz Celeron) with 1 GB of RAM and no page file?

failing that, get a copy of nlite and strip out most of the crap you don't use, this will reduce the load on your system, you can also then strip out most of the crap which kills sd cards,

i made my xp so lightweight it runs from 50mb of ram and boots in a mater of seconds.

I also did the same thing.. I have a 701 EEEPC, and added a 16gb sdhc card. I disabled the swap file, system restore, hibernation, and stripped out XP with nlite also. With 2gb ram, it's FAST.

hell man I've had a stripped XP on a Intel P3 333 with 128mb ram out perform an amd x2 5000 with 2gb of ram running a full xp!

just goes to show how much stuff is not needed!

That's exactly why so many are pissed about Vista

You can strip down Vista as well :P

yes you can but still not the the extent that you can with xp, even with a super stripped vista xp would be on par with it.

What kind of stuff do you strip out of XP? Is it stuff the average user would never honestly know was missing? Or do you strip down the interface and everything as well?

luciusad2004, I think that was your 666th post, but I would imagine that it would take away all of the eye candy that xp has, although it's not nearly as much as vista has.

no, XP keeps all of its eye candy, i remove things like scanner support if you dont have a scanner, remove it, remove acpi (no battery, gone) remove UPS gone, Server gone, time gone, (Thats the bit that checks the time on the ms server)security center gone ect ect.

all the usless crap the adverage user dosen't need, some stuff that office uses like oobe, is there but disabled and will turn its self on if you need it.
