That's right...I am finally starting my first real mod here...
I've been sitting on this old Compaq Presario case for a long time and haven't really been able to decide what to do with it. So after months of being lazy I have finally decided to go with a Battlefield 2 mod. Most of the BF2 mods I've seen out there are desert themed...but I am planning on doing something a little different...I thoroughly enjoy the Special Forces expansion, so that's what I am going to focus on. Sleek, black, plenty of green lights... It should be fun!

Of course I can't find any pictures of it before my handiwork so here's one from google...
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/c00524236.jpg

Ok...let's get started:up:

Ok, so the first thing that HAD to go was the stupid front facia which included a little storage area for CD's. Then it was a simple matter of drilling out a few rivets and....voila! Computer guts!

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1594.jpg

Since I tore off the old front panel (literally) I went online and ordered a pre-cut piece of aluminum to make a new one. Thank god for the guys in the motor pool at work...they let me use their shop. Unfortunatly I'm not allowed to take a camera to work so here's the finished product. (it still needs a little work with my file)

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1601.jpg

From here I wasn't sure what I wanted to do...since the front was all nice and shiny, I figured why not sand the whole case down to bare metal and make it nice and shiny too...

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1529.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1531.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1532.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1533.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1598.jpg

did I mention that I don't have a palm/mouse sander? Thats right...all I have is a sanding block. Needless to say I am not looking forward to sanding the three-sided piece that makes up the rest of the case...

dfigravity
07-25-2008, 11:03 PM
Ok, since I really don't want to do anymore sanding right now...or ever...I moved on to the side panel.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1534.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1535.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1538.jpg

Not too shabby if I do say so myself...

dfigravity
07-25-2008, 11:08 PM
My next step is to come up with a solution for the front panel USB... Because the old front panel was so large, the USB port sticks out about an inch and a half...

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1608.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1606.jpg

I need to recess it so that it will sit flush with my new front panel...still working on that one though.

Tomorrow I am going to cut a hole in the front panel for an 80mm intake fan, and maybe knock out some more sanding..............maybe.

Oh yea, it turns out the guys at work have powdercoating gear...SCORE! I'm thinking the whole case (inside and out) will be flat black with some gloss green accents somewhere...still working on that idea though

so I have this little analog DC meter...I would like to try and incorporate it into the mod...I have seen a few tutorials around the net for making your own circuit boards for something like this, but I'm not quite that tech savvy. It would be nice if there was a simple way to get it to monitor HDD activity, bandwidth, anything that would make the neddle jumpo around a bit...the back of the meter just has two posts, + and -
Any ideas??

other than ordering it online from Mnpctech, have you guys found a good substitute for modders mesh at your local hardware store? I'm heading out tomorrow to look, but figured I'd see if anyone else has had any luck...

dfigravity
07-27-2008, 03:31 PM
ok so here's a little update for today...

A few minutes after I posted my question about finding a substitute for modders mesh...I found this on my back door...not sure why I never really noticed it before...

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1672.jpg

SCORE!!!

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1637.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1647.jpg

Cool...so now to get the case ready...

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1639.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1646.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1644-1.jpg

dfigravity
07-27-2008, 03:33 PM
oh noes! Boo boo!

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1632.jpg

that's ok...there's no job too big or too small for Barbie...

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1634.jpg

Plus my favorite modders drink...(Lemonade flavored N.O. Xplode + Tang= AWESOME)

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1643.jpg

Ok, now back to playing...

dfigravity
07-27-2008, 03:41 PM
With the help of my trusty rubber mallet the "back door mesh" fits perfectly!

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1649.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1658.jpg

So now the issue of attaching it to the case...
I have seen a bunch of you guys use bondo for this job, however I didn't have any sitting around and I hadn't come up with a solid enough justification for my wife...so I dug around and found some Amazing Goop.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1673.jpg

I'm not totally confident in this stuff at the moment...

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1663.jpg

I used a few washers and a bolt to hold the mesh to the case while this stuff sets up...

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1664.jpg

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1668.jpg

Has anyone had any luck using Goop on metal? I imagine I am going to have to scrape this stuff off and find something else. We'll see though....any suggestions just in case?

dfigravity
07-27-2008, 03:44 PM
Ok, while that dries I decided to play around with the USB port. I found one laying around in my "box o' random computer crap"

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1650.jpg

Drilled a few holes, added standoffs and a little Goop to hold them (maybe threadlock would be better here...)

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1652.jpg

And voila!

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1655.jpg

You'll get the big picture once everything dries and I can take my front panel back into the motorpool shop...need to punch out a square hole...

dfigravity
07-27-2008, 05:03 PM
ok, I still have a week to make the decision, but I'm excited and I can't stop thinking about it... The guys at work are going to powdercoat this project for me...or rather, they're going to show me how and then let me do it...but I need to decide on colors...
The whole thing is going to be black for sure...but I can't decide between gloss black and wrinkle black. Wrinkle gives it a flat, textured look/feel, and gloss is obvious. Since I am basing this mod around the Special Forces expansion, green and black are my operational colors. I'll post a few sketchups in a minute.

dfigravity
07-27-2008, 05:17 PM
Here's a rough idea of what I'm thinking

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/opt1.jpg

I also have this nifty little fan that I was thinking about trying to incorporate somehow...maybe cut a hole so the housing sticks out of the case...repaint the fan green etc

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1630.jpg

I also still want to work that analog DC meter in somehow...just need to find a way to get it to read HDD activity or something

you have some great ideas!
I would suggest that you make the green stripe stand out or in, so that it's not in the same level as the rest of the case.( don know the English expression for this.)

Basically, you were right. I guess the technical terms you're looking for are "raised" and "recessed."

That could be interesting...I'll have to look at ways to do this. I can get my hands on plenty of scrap aluminum... I think it would be cool to be able to recess it...the panel is only 1/8" thick though and I don't think I have access to anything that could mill that out. Maybe just glue on aluminum strips? hmm...

I also was able to pick up a little spray paint today. I'm going to take apart the fans I'm using and try to get them painted tonight...hopefully pics will be up before bedtime. Thanks for the support guys!

ok...here's my update for the day...

sooooooooo, I came home with a little bit of paint today...

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_5094.jpg

I was torn because I had the choice between that green (grass green) and this OTHER green that looked like radioactive craziness...but it was high heat engine paint or something and I wasn't sure how it would do on plastic. ok ok, I'm just making excuses because I wish I would have gotten the other green. But this one is nice too. Anyway...PICTURES!

First step, disassemble...Check!

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_5090.jpg

Second step, Prime.......Check!

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_5095.jpg

Third step, make it colorful..........Check!

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_5100.jpg

that green is after one coat...I think the humidity is right around 100% (it feels like swimming when you step outside) so this painting thing is going to take awhile...I have to bring it inside to dry so we have a stinky house right now. Well I think that's it for today...hopefully I'll get some cutting done for the rear fan tomorrow and I STILL need to decide what to do with that old video card fan... (suggestions are welcome *hint hint*)

OH, almost forgot...I found these wheels lying around the house. Now to attach them somehow...

thanks for the compliment! you know...I was sort of thinking about giving them a light spattering of black paint...maybe use an old tooth brush to "flick" the paint on...that plus outlining the edges would match what I have planned for the plexi that will be going on the side...

Thanks for the idea Kris!!

in order to do that recess you could alwaysuse a pience of scrap wood, make a recess in that, then get a piece of wood the rite width, pefectly square, and then place the case side over the recessed piece of wood, place the batton over the recess and hammer the recess in.

That's a great idea...but wouldn't that make the side panel shorter? Or does aluminum "strech"? I'll have to get a piece of scrap and test that out. Great suggestion though...thanks bro!!!

:DOk, here's a little update for today...

I FINALLY ordered my plexi...should be in on Friday...schweet.

So I started prep for painting today...and that included sandblasting my case. Sandblasting. So if everything goes well tomorrow at lunch I should have the whole thing powdercoated. Here's a pic of the sandblasted goodness...
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1719.jpg
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1720.jpg

I also picked up a couple of goodies from Brantleys yesterday...
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1711.jpg

Then I got to use some machine called "Thor" to punch that square hole in the front panel for my USB...awesome. (And I couldn't resist a test mount of the switch)
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1721.jpg

So that's it for today...more updates to come tomorrow...paint, then (hopefully) a few side panel updates Fri. night.

small update for today...work was busy, so I didn't get to the painting, but the sandblasting was finished up. I wish I had pictures of the shop to show you guys, but I'm not allowed to have camera's or cell phones at work. Damn. Anywho, painting is on deck for tomorrow...for real this time. :)

update time!!

Ok, so I actually acomplished a few things in the last two days...First off...I got the powdercoating done...

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1727.jpg

Now, the only problem is that we didn't understand just HOW important it was to clean the metal before you powdercoat it...now there's fingerprints everywhere. Hmm. The worst part is that I'm heading up to Rochester, NY for two weeks for training so I have to wait that long to fix it. grr.

Ok, moving on...today I painted the green stripe and the fan grills...

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1734.jpghttp://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1736.jpg

And my plexi showed up in the mail! Schweet!

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1748.jpg

So there it is so far...hopefully I'll have tiem to do a little tomorrow, but we'll see. If not I'm going to have to put this to the side for a few weeks because of training. Thats all for now!

So I got to play with my plexi a little today...nothing huge, but at least it's something!
So I cut the pieces I'll need for the windows, and I also decided to to make a faceplate just for fun.

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_5155.jpg

no, you're right snow, those lines are a little too noticeable. I'm going to attack it with some 400grit...that should sort out those lines. Yea, that ruck LOOKS cool....until it's about 70lbs and on your back for miles and miles and millleessssssss...

And the watch!? HELL YEA!

dfigravity

Ok, so I hit it with 400, then 800...the lines are still there, but they're a little less noticeable. The more I sand it the less translucent it becomes, so I decided 800 was enough. I'm going for a glowing effect here.

anywho, here's a little more I was able to knockout tonight...

Let the madness begin!!!! HAHAHAHA! So here's where those paints come into play...I have to thank Crimson and his awesome book (http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1875.jpg) for this idea. Hopefully it'll turn out as good as his did...

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c126/dfigravity/IMG_1879.jpg

That's just the back side...once it dries I am going to stiple with black and green only on the plex just past the edge of the side panel. I can see it in my mind, I just hope it comes out the way I see it... *crosses fingers*

Well yeah I understand the weight but you don't wine much when you spend 75% of your time growing up with a marine, on a farm, getting up before the sun and everybody else within 10 square miles except for the other vet's having their 5 am coffee. Can't say that I ever bitched one day about it either. Kids these days have it so easy.... anyway back on topic if you have a local ace hardware they sell sand paper by the sheet perfect for that sanding block which saves a little in the pocket, they have a wide variety as well depending on your store, and its supporting small time local business' which usually have better service and personability in the long run. Mom and pop shops are my bread and butter they are always there to help a faithful customer. They also may have a good source for attaching that plexi if you don't already have a solution. You can also try Tractor Supply Company, they don't just have farm stuff and you would be surprised what parts you can source from there. Also while your there pick up some 3m scratch remover up for that watch while your at it lol. I know I am preaching about the choir about where to get some of this stuff but I showed up a little late to this game and I am trying to help as much as possible.

haha, no worries bro! I appreciate the input! I would LOVE to be able to go to an ACE hardware...there's one back home (Beechwold Hardware) that is awesome...great people in there. And until right now I didn't think there were any ACE hardware stores in Fayetteville...turns out there are a few! Thanks!!

I hear you about kids having it easy these days...I sometimes find it hard to keep my mouth shut when you hear people bitching about little stuff like having to work a few hours a week or not being able to play video games all the time. Try getting up at 0500 every day for PT, (running and rucking three days a week) having to hit the gym at lunch because there isn't time after work, getting off work at 1800 and then coming home to help cook dinner and take care of the kids. And then throw in the random deployment, TDY's that come out of nowhere and last a few weeks or more and the random trips out to the field and life can be pretty overwhelming. The whole point of this is that life isn't so bad when you have only a very few responsibilities...so enjoy it! :) Damn...two rants in a row! Hell yea Snow! Or should I say "HOORAH!" Where's SgtM when you need him? :D And just to clear it up, I'm in the Air Force...NOT the Army....I just happened to be attached to them. heh heh heh...

annnnnnnnnnd I finished painting the side panel! Honest opinons here, because I can wash this stuff off with soap and water until I put the clear coat on top of it. I need to try and get a better picture of it...

I like it, i would actually say add more. Everything up to this point has been perfect as far as angles and everything. I think taking the window as an opportunity to grunge it up a little and give it a little personality.

Yea...I'm a little nervous though...there's that fine line between just enough and too much. I'll mess around with it some more tonight and see. Thanks man!

Alright, so I really think that first version of the side panel looked like crap. So after scrubbing the paint off and trying again, and again.......and again, here's the final product.

I also went ahead and (thanks to some advice from SgtM and xmastree) replaced the LED's in the front panel fan...unfortunately the green LED's weren't as bright as I had hoped (they aren't quite the right color either) so if I have time, I might swing by Brantley's tomorrow...anywho, here's how it turned out. It was just a standard blue thermaltake fan btw

Thanks! Yea, I came home from work today, took one look at the plex the way I left it last night and was embarrassed. I'm very happy with the way it ended up coming out.

That paintjob on the plex just gave me an idea for one of my mods.

And thankfully, I've got a bit of scrap red plex left behind to test it out on.

Looks fantastic, especially that "2"! I'm a Battlefield 2 whore myself, it's addictive. Special Forces was a great addition, my favorite map is Ghost Town, I like to grab the sniper rifle and find a nice dark corner and just pick people off the rooftops, good wholesome fun!

h3mo- Yea...that stripe was sort of a last minute idea...the only problem is, that stripe is powdercoat (so is the black) so to change it, I would have to sandblast the whole case again (it goess around the whole thing). As much as I would love to change it...I don't have that time :( I'm leaving for Afghanistan at the end of this month so I am going to try and get as much done as possible before then.

jdbsn- yea...BF2 whore is about the best way to describe the addiction...I'm a big fan of the Warlord map myself! I am going to try and get the top poanel plex painted in the same fashion this week. Snow is sending me some LED's so I'm going to try and do a nice little array around it to light it up as well.

well guys...its been fun, but due to my military commitment I have to put my mod on hold...hopefully I can pick it back up next spring. I'm still waiting to get back in and put a second powdercoat on to try and fix those fingerprints, but I don't think there will be time. I'll still be hanging around the forums though drooling over your mods. :)

SUPRISE! I'm back! So I FINALLY finished this project...I'll have pics up in the next couple days (currently traveling). The only bummer on this one is that it was going to be my little music recording studio (record my practice DJ sets with Audacity) but it's a microATX case and apparently the mobo and/or processor $h!t the bed on me. Crap. Anyway, it's nice to be back! Pics on the way...
