View Full Version : Paperazzi
Been a long time since I touched any casings. Most of these are done during night time, so pardon the pictures.
This is a project that involves no or very few planning (dude, when ideas pop out of your head the moment you open your eyes waking up). I do sketch more or less what I "see", but then since the material is so flexible I can recycle it a gazillion time I want if the design doesn't come out as I like and I can re-mold them however I want. Damn, I feel like Sam Winchester, I got "visions" lol...
Some details to cut things short. Paperazzi involves:
1. An ultra heavyweight case (server-like case) thats why it involves paper not Bondo
2. Tools: scissors, gripping glue, spray paint, poster color, a bit of acrylic, water
3. Material: A4 paper, new or old all become my victims (count in buckets)
So far one side panel is 70% thru molding. Plunked remaining material on 2nd side panel but aint enough.
Preparing the materials
Won't dwell on the case too much so here's the front panel shot. Side panels.. well, all of them looks the same: piece of steel.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/fpmoldori.jpg
One night after quitting my job, I started cutting again.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/pprraw.jpg
After refining.. time to soak it up. I first used the bucket.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/happybig.jpg
Eventually I moved to a 100-disc container cover
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/happy1.jpg
You dont just soak the paper wait 2 days and start molding, it wont be soft enough. And when the paper's either not fine or soft enough it tends to leave reptile-like skin when it dries you can actually see the flakes of paper. So, once soaked just pick up what you have and mold it into a ball.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/ball2.jpg
How big is it? Well, go figure it out yourself
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/ball3.jpg
Then once its dried, after 2 days without the help of the sun, time to drown it. This is when its all bonded together and the paper tends to be smooth after a re-soak
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/ball4.jpg
White bull's testicle soaked in porridge anyone?
Testing
Did a few tests with different containers. Firstly curves and circles.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/itcurves.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/fanhole.jpg
Circles are done by just molding it around a disc. Here you can see the paper's rough n not well soaked (first few buckets). Made some horns out of it, or spikes, or.. whatever.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/spikes2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/spikes3.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/spikes1.jpg
After testing, its a test mold. Eventually I molded it for a few nights for something like this.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/oriplan.jpg
Scraped it though cos it looks like and old lady's shoes, minus the smell. So chucked everything I've tested and made into the container for re-soak.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/happy1.jpg
Soak it up...
Side Panel Part 1
With vision comes the sketch. I have to, before I start forgetting. Then wrap it up in some plastic for reuse
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/spsketch1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/spsketch2.jpg
Looks easy aint it? All I have to do is plop some paper pulp on it and its done. Not. Had a very un-fun fun with mr steel ruler for about 10-15 minutes. Not once, but 4 times dammit
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/spmold1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/spmold2.jpg
Then to lay them up on the side panel one by one to determine the shape and position. Mold up the top part which absurdly looks different from the sketch as I didnt realize how hard it is to mold around tight ass areas which really are a pain in the ass
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/sp1.jpg
Here.. compare reptile-skin paper with smooth pulp. I basically have to refine most of the molds.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/pprrough.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/pprsmooth.jpg
Went up to this few days ago
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/spmold3q.jpg
Went up to this yesterday morning before I leave the house and created this worklog
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/spmold3q2.jpg
Side Panel Part 2
Since its too bare and the thing at the sides looks like
- duck's feet
- stumpy dwarf's sword
I need something on top that sorta extend the 3D thing or uh.. well I don't know how to put it in words. Just another vision I had while waking up. OK, ribcage.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/rib.jpg
Now, I have to pick something of the right size to mold it on. Modding Idol...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/modidol.jpg
Some plastic, tape... SM the idol, chuck in some paper pulp and further it with an even more un-fun fun with mr ruler
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/rib1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/rib2.jpg
Resources running low. Dammit. And luckily some back up, which is just... "some"... for the scale of the mod
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/happyend.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/happynew.jpg
I just left the house few hours ago with about 10 pieces of paper snipped into fine pieces in the bucket. I'll wait for the water to clear up before letting them go for a dip as its coffee-colored now due to some pipe fixing in Subang from 12-6am yesterday. Sonowabeetch.
Updates: Have a big load, ok not really, 100-piece CD/DVD container's cover filled with soaked paper. Prolly another 2-3 days before mod continues again.
Thanks ppl.. hope I can finish this case this time since I'm jobless now. Yeah I intend to spray paint it and a bit of poster color work on it before one final clear spray layer. But need to figure out and test if i should go with one layer of clear on top first to see if it'll smoothen it out. There's still plenty to do with that panel, and once its all done gripping glue goes in first :) Its pretty hard actually, doesnt come off the side panel unless you pour some water on it.
Side Panel Part 3
Finally the big ass ball is hardened and spent a couple of minutes killing it. It floats actually, which caught me offguard cos I thought it'll take in the water and "drown" lol.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image004.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image005.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image002.jpg
Now I have almost a full bucket of paper to work with. :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image003.jpg
Decided to scrap the original rib sketch and mold cos its kinda waste of time to do it both sides and then to combine them. So a new sketch which makes both sides into one, currently one is up, getting another tonight after work.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image006.jpg
Found this foam at the shop during re-stock of HDDs, which another "vision" came lmao while i was smoking.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image000.jpg
So took a knife and cut it to get the shape, took it home and place it on top of my other side panel. Ok it works, now I need a drawing block to trace it cos I don't wanna use the foam.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image001.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image007.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image008.jpg
Spend about 1/2 hour to paste up the other side panel
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image009.jpg
Thats about all for yesterday. More tonight cos I need to do another sketch for the main side panel. Still a long way to go for that panel.
Updates: Hmm, my friend just donated a lot of material for me... look at this stash of ECS instruction booklet lol...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/1.jpg
you think all that paper would aid in noise dampening? no more hard drive noise from that thing lol
looks good mate, like the bones theme to the panels so far
Looking into that possibility. Problem is with paper the surface is gonna be rough inside, throw air cooling in, the dust's gonna b1tch like a crack addict in rehab when I wanna clean it.
Lots of detail. I like.
Not as much as yours :D No cuttings on mine literally. I got jelly hands and my dremel's dead.
Oh my god this is fantastic, totally original way of doing things! And you my friend provide some of the best quote material i have ever seen! Into the sig with you awsome quoteiness!
Lol you might wanna look out for that typo "and old lady".. my bad
That is ridiculously cool. I had NO idea what was possible with paper - great design as well.
+rep for the originality.
Thanks mate. Always trying new material but I figure out paper suits me more cos plexi has been giving me nightmares for the past 2 projects
yes very profesional i cant wait to see whats next
Your wish is my command...

Side Panel Part 4 (Minor updates)
Went on wetting (with water, not as in wetting my pants type of wetting!) the main side panel to strip out the curves. They suck, literally, and unplanned.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/spmold3q2-1.jpg
Sketch up the base for the 4 empty sides based on rough space measurement. For once my eyes did me justice, cos if i do rough measurement on plexi like i did before, it basically screwed me over.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/abc.jpg
Trace em. And some stand-behind-the-yellow-line discipline with an expired driving license. Should look something like the third picture. I totally suck at using MS Paint, period.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/sketch.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/4dry.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/rough.jpg
This sucker took me almost an hour to come up with after tracing the foam on a drawing block, sketch, retrace on A4 paper which ended up inside out, and retracing on a new block. Its for the right panel or what i call the idle panel. Ain't done yet for the top and the sides, daddy need visions *takes african dream roots and sleeps*
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/foam.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/foamsketch.jpg
Well, if the 4 base dries tonight, I can go on molding them when I get home. By the way, Intel did me a real good favor when I was installing a pc for a customer. I looked at the heatsink wrapping for a minute and figured out I can use it for the center of my main panel :)
Will post more tomorrow after I mold it tonight, my phone's flat right now. So much for Nokia's "Connecting People" theme. More like "Disconnecting People (fine letter) with crappy batts".
Side Panel Part 5
The 4 left panel add-ons are dried, placed on the left panel to get the placement and starts molding the top part. Will have to wait for it to dry before going again or else the center curve will collapse
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/lp.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/lptilt.jpg
Ah the intel box... it looks like this, and I cut out the sides, turn it upside down and start smearing paper pulp all over its behind. Kinky...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/intel.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/intelmold.jpg
So from the right panel sketch, start molding. The base is eventually too big cos I have to do the curves first (it should look on top of the whole line) so I have to do it in a couple of days instead of one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/rightpnl.jpg
Might be able to finish the base for this by tonight cos I'm having offday tomorrow.
Side Panel Part 5
Offday... Intel thing dried, so pulled out the plastic holder and got this. Unfortunately tad too high for my liking, so decided to trim it. Still too high, so screw it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Intelmold-.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/2qfvc.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/vjdds.jpg
Did a rough sketch and then drew my own so I can have a flat base to start with for the middle part. The lines at the center is kinda messed up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/4tgfdsf.jpg
Continued on the left panel with some extras and molded the new base higher
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Mpgama.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Wpajma.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Tgamja.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/se4trb.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/afgbrrfrf.jpg
For the right panel I thought it'll be easier to just mold everything first and then doing the extensions after it dried, so I laid out all the remaining paper pulp on it before transferring it to the right panel
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Gdjdpam.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/merfs.jpg
Now I'm out of paper, have to wait another 2-3 days before I can continue :(
Side Panel Part 6 / Top & Front
Am still soaking up the paper, now I have 2 different containers as I just soak another pile in the bucket. Let them soften up just in time when I finish using up the current pulp. Eventually I still have to wait till the paper's fine enough to refine the last bit of the left side / active panel, then I need to test on spraying layers, color theme, and will mix a cheap home made purple slime (will be shown much later once I need to use it only) :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagetgd.jpg
This what I molded to replace the Intel thingy cos it was way too bulky n high. Now its resting in my bin. Moved it onto the left panel and watered it down flat, still need a lot of refining and thickening for last touch on that panel before I move on to the right one. Paper's extremely rough here. See why I hate to let them play in the sun with the window open? It curves.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagetd.jpg
I'll need to leave the round sides and the center hollow for the slime and I got something from the case to help out shaping it lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagemgt.jpg
Its irritating to sit around after work with nothing to do, so I sketched the top panel thingy which will be stacked quite high up. Again, no cuttings on the top panel. Took about 5 minutes to finish designing and about 15 minutes to mold. Don't mind those spots, its coffee, honestly.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagewpa.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagempdj.jpg
This the front panel. Its fn irritating cos I wanna remove the hatch but the legs are deadly molded onto it and fit into the side. Lucky day. Met a returning customer who had the same case minus the hatch so I asked him how did he remove it. "Oh, I accidentally pressed against it while its open". I went home took a look at it, and purposely did some karate kid on it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagegwdj.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imageab.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagezaj.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imageze.jpg
Based on real life story. No front panel was harmed during the making of this picture above. Perfect break.
Now the sucky part. Waiting for the paper to soften. :(
Something to laugh at, a signboard I took at a coffee shop
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagedsa.jpg
Hard Disk Cage Part 1
Loller.. I got nothing to do here at the shop. We have a numbnuts working here who is, everyone agreed, at the bottom of the IQ table. I saw him wrecking an old cd-rom and I asked him what he's doing. He's trying to stuff a hard disk in, cover it up, and slot it into one of the bay drives. Gave me an idea. Imagine that, ideas from a numbnuts.
Grabbed one old ASUS rom, unscrewed the bottom part and basically ripped all the greens out.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/234.jpg
Then I found something of a latch attached to it, hooked. So I have to amputate Captain Hook in order to use the latch. Remove all the moving parts in it, and bring the hatch down
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/345.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/567.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/789.jpg
Perfect fit. Too bad now we need to cut the back as there's no space there.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/678.jpg
Hmmm, gonna take me some time to mold thru this thing and stick it to the bottom panel to save place and airflow allocation (strong 120mm fan at the bottom of the front panel pushing air thru this junk first and then the graphics card ;) )
Voila... doesn't move a single millimeter when overturned...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/890.jpg
Be back soon :)
Top Panel Part 1
Headache. Everyday not enough sleep because of the thing. Layered up the top panel cos I can't touch the left panel since its done. Decide to scrap the right panel design since its too... um.. low profile compared to the left one.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imageab-1.jpg
Found the design of the top panel too small and empty at the back so did some free hand add in. Still not done yet, just the first layer, its going to be bulkier than this
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagempdj.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imageae.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagead.jpg
Front Panel Part 1
Layered the front panel a bit cos I still havent go and get the plexi for the fan (occupying the 3 5.25" bay under the DVD) and ran out of paper halfway molding.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imageaa.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imageag.jpg
This the right panel's new design, need to wait for paper to soften before molding. a bit packed but see if I can pull it off.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imageac.jpg
Left panel done, need to do some refining to fill in gaps and not-so-smooth curves, then test painting on test materials before starting to paint the panel.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imageaf.jpg
AHHHHHH have to scrape the whole top panel off... Can't work on it cos its too skinny to grow bulky. Now I'm working on the original "vision" of two large curved horns, i think its time to try out paper carving when its hard. Most probably photos by tomorrow. Front panel all pasted up.
Bloody hell holes around me cant even find a single place that sells black n clear spray paint. One thing I find reaaaaaaaaaally weird is how those paper can get so stuck on the panels, steel or plastic, without adhesive. Tried removing a bump about 3/4 of a cm with my hands but it wont budge :O
Be back tomorrow
Top Panel Part 2
Ahhh.. a lot of paper to use last nite. Scraped the top panel, gave it 2 silicones lol as a base for the 2 um.. "horns"? Felt horrible grabbing the pulp when its that big, cos my brain keep on imagining my hands belongs to a porn star's hang grabbing a big.. you know... erghhhh
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imaghr.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Ima12f.jpg
Gave it a little life with some small curves
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Ima32.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imab3.jpg
Front Panel Part 2
Front panel is all patched up and worked on the curves at the bottom part.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Ima84.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Iman5e.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imav32.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imab2d.jpg
Now I'm kinda lost when it comes to the empty FDD bracked.. should I patch it up?.. hmmm
Front Panel Part 3
I was dead bored and squeezing the water out of the paper pulp while watching X-Files (see how bored I am) and then I took a look at the thing I squeezed and thought "Heyy I like the look". So on came 4 of these bone-like thing for the front panel. The idea is to leave a few gaps for the 120mm intake on the three empty 5.25" slots.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image001v33.jpg
Here's the front panel after 2 days' work. Yeah, ran out of idea I know. Cos it takes 2 days to come up with a line and 2 curves :P Then 2 of the bones came on, with some help of super glue.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image005v32.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagev12.jpg
And then 3. Decided to add some contours to the corner of the front panel too.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image015v73.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image014v22.jpg

Top Panel Part 3
Arrrr I donno what to type, so just take a look.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Imagev1008.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image007v24.jpg
Right Panel
Thought of sticking to the bone thingy, just refined. Nothing to type on my mind. Lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image002v32.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image003v64.jpg
Just paint. Both my side panels are already heavier than a cheapskate Powerlogic case (minus the PSU) before I even patch them up. Had my offday yesterday but didnt do much on it cos needed my sleep lol.
Front Panel Part 4
Added some curves to the side of the front panel cos it looked.. well too empty to my liking
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image002-1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image004-1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image005-1.jpg
PAINT
Me is gots itchies hands. Can't resist the black spray paint so decided to have a go at it and see how it looks like after the first layer. Brown will be coming up but I need to see if i can wake up earlier than 10am lol.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image006-1.jpg
Dude... you're fugly
Honestly its fugly, the paper suck up most of the first layer and it looked purplish and damp. So a second layer of black to make it more or less shiny. Ahhhh I need to wake up early to get the brown in. This reminds me of a petroleum covered bird lol.
Misc
Did a few more "fingers" for the right panel and some other minor stuffs (non pedo related stuffs lolx). 120mm bracket for the 3 5.25" slots which will be thicken when I have time. And filed a face plate and layered it to stealth the ROM.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image003-1.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image000-2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image001-1.jpg
There's more to do tonight when I get home. No more spray paint job for these few days.
Thanks. Actually the paint dried the same way as the pic :O sorta like petroleum covered. Hate that pic cos almost cant diff the texture from the pavement's texture lol. Meh. If I'd wake up tmrw being blessed with wicked painting skills I'll start a new religion; Capelloism heh.
I found something, uber cheap, kinda tough considering the demand of Paperazzi, and I can finally ditch my paper-molded fan grill :D ... Will post pix tomorrow, bloody Nokia's batt died on me again.
Oooooh.. excited & can't wait to try it out. No, its not a new girlfriend.
...File found: cable "square tubes"
...Copy: Tried as fan slider
...Warning: custom LED on fan
...Result: LED blocking ROM slot
...Final result: Phailed
...Total damage: Excitement died
Meh... I don't know whats the thing called generally, its those white square tubes that u hide cables, usually nailed onto the wall and has a cover that can slide off? Time for new alternatives..
@Dane: Yeah, it highlighted teh texture, but I need brown shades now to make the base looks better.
Top Panel Part 5
Did a bit here and there for last nite. I'm more or less that type of guy, when I have sorta new vision on how to go on molding the shapes n angles, I work on it first. Spent 3 hours on HALF of the top panel last night. Couldn't go on with the other half cos my back's killing me. Got home at 10pm, finished around 1.30am. Sketched what was intended to be a horn (which eventually turned out to be something of a crocodile's tail in the end, which I like more than my initial idea). When it comes to a larger shaped scale, I don't do freehand molding like the front panel. I use these base first to get the area n gap right.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image002-2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image003-2.jpg
1/3 of the tail is up by around 30-40 minutes. I need to mold it away from the base before placing it on the panel, as I'll risk tearing the base causing it running out of shape if I do it on top. Its sorta like the front panel curves except its more vertically curved. Those 2 lil fellas at the side are used to shape them around the edges. The L shape holder works pretty well considering how it can be held. And the small sdriver do good at chipping out excessive paper that causes bulges.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image011.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image009-1.jpg
After 3 hours, we're finally done. With legs numb as being short circuited by a PSU, and a back that felt like I've just been sleeping for 72 hours, I finished half of it. The other half will be done tonight when I get home. I'm loving it :D Its so worth the pain in the leg and back. Sorry if the pics are blurry, was having a dizzy spell yesterday due to inbalance fluids in the ear (slept too much the previous day).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image015.jpg
Front Panel Part 6
The bezel for the stealth is done patched up. Gave it a lil bumpy surface so I can slime it from above making it sorta drip downwards (yet to make the slime, I don't want it to harden up cos won't be using it now).

Sits snugly into the slot. Carved out all the excessive paper from the sides to make sure it doesn't hold tight.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image008-2.jpg
Will continue with the bottom part for the bezel tonight. Not sure if I still have enough pulp in the bucket for both the bezel and the other half of the top panel.
Misc
Found this thing at my friend's pc shop. Sometimes they do cabling work for offices. Thought I can use it as a fan slider. You know, sticking one half to the bottom part of the fan, the other half to the case, L-shape the front and back of each half to make sure the fan don't slide off when tilted.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image004-2.jpg
Cut off 2 pieces each of 3 inches long. Tucked em under the fan to see how it looks. Looks fine in white but I haven't patch n paint the inside of the case so if I'm using it I'll patch them up to match the black-brown colors as well.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image005-2.jpg
Well, in the end, that "if" in the previous line is a BIG IF. This monster fan (gave me black n blue thumb on a couple of occasions before, cut into my index finger tearing the skin once) is modded by the seller with red LEDs that I asked for during the previous project. I have 2 left, one red lighted, and one normal black. Here's the BIG IF factor.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image006-2.jpg
The LED; it totally gone a bit higher and I wasn't able to slide my mock ROM in. Damn. Easier solution will be plexi, cut drill and superglued to the steel and then patch n paint. Still yet to get a single piece of plexi. With petrol price hike over here, not sure how much does it cost for 1 ft sq rite now. Nevermind, I'll continue with the remaining panels first before moving to the interior. Still need to un-rivet the top panel after I'm done.
That's all for yesterday night :D I'm a night modder cos I don't want the paper to dry "unnaturally", not even with the help of sunlight. Be back soon.
Back with a few new n old stuffs. Touched all 3 remaining panels and basically almost done molding with the front and top panel.
Top Panel Part 6
Was molding it off and on cos "fingers wasn't feeling right". And then I thought I finished the other half but basically its very uneven compared to the first half.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image004-3.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image003-3.jpg
So, had to pull some chipsmore biscuit advertisement on the top panel. Now you see, now you don't. RIPPPPPP. And spent my whole offday afternoon slowly re-doing the second half of the top panel. The front part is slightly thicker than the other side, but I'm leaving gaps between the two so its easier to work forward to the tip of the panel.

Can't really hold the front panel too straight and the floor is so packed so this is the only pic I have for it now. Will take another prior to spray painting. Too damn blurry. Added some random surface to the center of the panel.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image014-1.jpg
Right Panel Part 1
I found a chunk of exhausted kryptonite. Really. Lol its just those aquarium deco thats sold in packs and costs about RM4.50 only for like 30 of them in a pack (USD 1.50 / Euro 0.80 approximately). I found a part of a mini UFO that crashed into my room. Really, again. Well, part of a Crittertrail hamster cage that is. The cage was STOLEN while I was DRYING it outside. I can't imagine a living person, who would steal a hamster cage. So I took half of the running ball.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image000-4.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image001-2.jpg
Looks ok, but since I don't need green on the case imma spray it black too. Firstly do a layer of mold around the.. uh... um.... lets call it a bowl. Then I rip the thing out, put some of those black stones inside the circle. Close it back to see how it looks like.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image010.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image012.jpg
I took out the bowl so I'll have the base hardened and I can slip the bowl in. Reason: I want to spray the inner circle first before proceeding molding the outside to ensure there's no white thing left and visible due to uneven spray with the bowl on. Thats all for now. I'm getting my own internet in a few days' time so should have another post in a week's time. Out.
The paper doesnt contribute much but I'll get a weight and put the case on (with the h/w inside) just to see the total weight lol. You better start believing n pinch yourself everytime i update the thread haha
Paper alone it might not stand even a mid-strength knock with the knuckles. So I sorta do my own recipe on it
1. Usual process: layer > dry > mold > refine with pulp > dry
2. Glue layer: gripping glue fully covering the whole panel till its shiny or specks of shine. I saw 2 types of glue, 1 is called bonding glue. I thought I need to hold a big piece of crumbles together so I went for gripping. Not sure what bonding one does. *shrug*
3. Paint layer: this i think it should be "clear > color > clear", i think. The first panel is holding on fine and took a few knocks and the two-finger hook up.
Not really bothered by how-to for this mod anymore cos the remaining parts are basically in my head, just the paint job n mounting the intake fan to teh 3 empty 5.25 bay. More of rolling around in bed for 3-4 hours figuring the next mod :P paper too.
Resin.. hmm.. nice idea, will try that out on the next mod. Thanks for the idea mate.
Be free tmrw but need to linger around for the phone guy to come and install my line. Tis my last day helping out at the shop so I probably got more time to do the spray job after Sunday. I'll need to recharge my digicam's batts, had been taking photos using my 6500 slider since the beginning of the mod and photos are getting worst.
Mwehehehehe. I've recovered... mwehehehehe. :D Didn't go anywhere on Saturday just trying to get the spray job done. Did a few parts on Friday. First the right, last, remaining panel that is still not progressing due to paint job on the left panel. Not much of a looker cos I wanna keep it as plain as possible just in case I need to haul the case somewhere else (I move around a lot)
Right Panel Part 2
Ripped out the running ball from the mold and sprayed it black first. Then I moved to the "stones" in it. A layer of black and straight away another highlight layer of brown back to back so the colors mix and the brown goes darker. After it dried, a bit of swinging of the arm to highlight it a lil with the brown.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Rpanring.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Rpanstn.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Rpanstart.jpg
Done and done, time to mold the sides of the bowl. First a simple template for the bowl itself. Then extending it to half of the remaining length at 45 degrees. Thats all for the panel now, want to finish the spray job for the top and front panel first, which is already grip glue-layered and cleaned for Saturday morning. And then more of the left panel, slime time :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Rpandn2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Rpandn.jpg
Front Panel Part 7
Had been laying around for a couple of days untouched so time to move my lazy ass and get it colored. As usual, one layer of black, dried and crappy purplish looking. Then another black layer to get it all shiny, and immediately a brown layer for highlight of darker brown shades.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Fpanlyful.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Fpanlysd.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Fpanly2.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Fpanly1.jpg
One more last job to do for it is to highlight it with brighter brown and then some slime-work (read Left Panel Final Part below) on it and basically the mod will be about 90% done by then
Top Panel Part 7
Another spray job for this part. Usual layers of spray, except that this time it turned tad too dark for the brown =\ One more highlight layer and it'll be done. :)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Tpan1ly.jpg
Left Panel Final Part
The last time you saw it its meta-black with dark brown highlights. Now its fully done for the spray job, except the one last layer of clear spray which I plan to do for all 4 panels at the same time.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Lpanhl.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Lpanfinal.jpg
Its basically done. Woke up after the slime work and got the shock of my life lol, not to say its good or bad. First thing's first. Some might have played these things earlier; mix poster/water color with glue and it'll eventually harden into a shiny, smooth colored pulp. Thats Happy Tree Friends at the back :D lol
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Slimemat.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Slime.jpg
Pour it onto the center part of the panel. Here I accidentally rubbed my finger against one of the molds, and while trying to wipe the stain away I noticed some of the colored glue sipped in between teh cracks and highlighted the cracks. I thought it looked nice with those lines highlighted so eventually rubbed the remaining into the panel to highlight the cracks produced by paper :D
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Slimed.jpg
Honestly, I didn't like how the centre turned out, so when I woke up I discovered something I'm very pleased with... ...the paper soaked up all the glue, leaving only streaks of dark purple on it. Phew. So well yeah, just imagine the panel for now from the picture above minus the purple thing in the middle :) No pix, its dark in here.
K, tats all for now, been out of town for the past 2 days so I guess I'll do the rest tomorrow morning when I wake up. Oh yeah, a sneak peek of the thing in the dark.

Man this got the be the longest post I've ever done for this thread.
Later.
Almost there... give and take another 48-72 hours to completion (if I don't oversleep everyday) Right panel remaining. Only 1 clear coat away for 3 panels, highlight-clear-slime for right panel, and a 120mm bracket for the 3 empty 5.25' slot

ive been watching this silently for a while now...VERY COOL!
Thanks man.
Um... I accidentally and without knowingly did a dual-tone / candy look for the case actually. Was letting it have some cam-whoring session since its pretty much done minus the fan bracket which is killing my arms, and was pretty shocked that when there's flash the thing's colour looks absolutely different than what the eyes usually see.
So kinda rushed out of the house with one panel to see if its the camera or if its for real. Well, the experiment outside proved its an accidental dual-tone. I guess when I did the back-to-back spray with black n brown. But honestly it looks like crap under the sun

OMG that looks great all with files well done +rep
That grill is gonna look awesome.
Thanks mates. Actually finished it 1 hour before the shop where I sent the dremel for repair is opened. Now I need to do a bit of filing at the sides to make way for the rivets holding the ROM and FDD cage.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/Image006-3.jpg
thats really cool man, +rep.
but isn't it brittle once i dries?
Thanks mate. Not really, just a small part of it is brittle lol. There's no "neat" for Paperazzi haha.
I just filed 4 small curves at the sides to make way for the rivets on the chasis. Sprayed black + brown on the back and didn't go all in on it to give it a semi-translucent look to isolate the fan's lights or the shapes won't show well if its transparent.

Some minor updates on the keyboard. This has definitely got to be the most fragile and hardest thing to work with for this project. Not really done with them claws yet, just need them to harden first. Need to get another one up.

I take a look into the small bucket next to it and... GOD.. THE KEYS!!! @_@ Basically gonna cover all the keys as I don't have to look at them eheheh. Estimate completion should be by next Friday plus the paintjob. Just an estimate if nothing came up that requires me to run around town.
Finished layering the whole thing. 1 key is missing. The "\" key, gonna have to mod the sides of the keyboard by the looks of it. I've never used the Pause/Break key before so I'm gonna take that key.

Here we go again...
How it looks like after finalizing every side, about 4 hours ago. I keep the right side kinda plain as I'm a right hander (mouse?). Its not really as fun as the case itself as the thing have like "Handle With Care" stamped all over it. And not a big space for me to explore and turn it into a freak.

After a heavy dose of gripping glue on the keys and the board itself, prep it for paint. Masking tape.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v224/aceytlv/IMG_1336.jpg
I just did a dual layer black+brown like 2 hours ago. Brown's not so obvious now but its dual-tone just like the case itself. First batch of buttons go first. Then one layer of black for the board. And after that another layer to give it the gloss, and immediately brown highlights for dual tone effect.

Thats it for the whole week + today. Imma highlight it further with brown tomorrow or the next day. And then some slime time (another slow moving process due to the keys =_= ) before 2 final layers of clear spray just like the case.
Now... I have been thinking will I ever finish with the full set. I feel like making a custom mouse pad for it now. Someone please enrol me in Paper-mache Anonymous.
wow that looks good was talking to you before you posted and didnt imagin it that good nice work
Blessed be mate, I have a new found respect for recycling! Brilliant idea, I love the effect.

Finds the purple to be extremely shiny. Although I thought of darkening the whole keyboard and touch up part of it with darker colors, decided not to. Instead of using brown this time, I tried red oxide and it stood out better as a "sticky mod". Then the more I look at it, the more I got used to it so heck, no redo for my "cute" barney keyboard.

I have no idea why I did this sketch of the mousepad for. I'll call it the M-oozepad for now. I have problems with conveying what is in my head onto paper and don't really wanna do any shadings or detailing for it. :P Cos I know it'll turn out absolutely different when I'm done. No. This is just the start of detailing ;)
Photobucket screwed me. In case if you missed it or too lazy to scroll back a couple of pages, here's some flickr pix of the completed case.

Now I'll have to wait for the bandwidth limit to roll over the month for photobucket. Meh.. getting a 2nd account
Some update. Have to stack near-empty spray cans on it so it doesnt bend when it dries.

Added another layer underneath it to thicken it a little. And bought some stuffs today to finish it off.

Just for deco purposes. Lol, no, not watercooled mousepad, that would be nonsense. :)
Mwehehehe. Painted with minor highlights. Then further highlight with the old brown instead of red oxide that I used for the keyboard (it sucks, I'm gonna need a new can of brown)

Slimed :D
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll123/sunbeamksi/Paperazzi%20Mse%20Pad/skdi3.jpg
I stuffed the 2 cylinders into their place, took me a couple of minutes as the paint and slime tightened the loop a little. Feel its too empty so I pour some slime and additional glue into it. Don't ask me how it's gonna turn out to be when its dried, I got no idea at all lol. We'll just have to wait and see.

For the plastic tubes, opt for semi-flow look. Since the cylinders are half empty or half full I'll just make it look as if its non functioning anymore.

I'll need to clear coat them tomorrow and superglue the top covers early. Might be taking a couple of days off modding as I'm getting my left calf's tatt finished tomorrow noon.
Done done done. 3/6 of the set.

Time to go get my ink. I've already got some ideas for the mouse, LCD monitor and speaker base in my head. Be back once I get a back-up mouse :D
A little update. This is a stock Logitech MX 518 and an MX 518 when you open it up.

Went for vines instead of the usual uh.. "unexplainable" shapes. Gimme a couple more days you can see them popping up clearly once its painted. :D
Teaser. Too dark to take good pix.

I didn't kill it. Phew. More tmrw.
I fn hate this new can of clear coat. It lightens the color instead of darkening it like the old one did. Now the slime looks sorta pinkish purple damn. I'm gonna go hunt for the old brand soon and chuck the almost-full new one into the bin.
How its supposed to look like:

How it ended up:

Good news tho. On the verge of getting a new job and its all up to me whether I wanna take it or the other one. That means I can probably kick off the next project in about three to four months' time as I need to have some savings for myself first. Milked my account dry for this 4 months.
Left side view. Noticed the part which is a large patch of pink-purplish slime? I kept that part wide enough for my thumb to rest on. Fits nicely.

Here's a right view. The first curve on the bottom is for the 4th finger to rest on. With the added molds currently my palm can fully rest on it without cringing the index and middle finger.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll123/sunbeamksi/Paperazzi%20Mouse/IMG_1392.jpg
Yeah it feels rough and the ribbed part does its job by keeping the whole palm from feeling the full surface.I did carve away some excess on the sides of the click-pad (since its a joint piece I can't call it buttons eh? lol) as the right click wasn't feeling very smooth once the whole thing is screwed back together. And I took out the little bar for the scroll button. You know, the one that gives the scroll button the ticking sound. Now when I scroll it feels like I'm using a scroll pad instead lol cos its smooth scrolling.

OK, nuff of preaching and time to get on with the speaker base and the USB hub first. I'll leave the LCD monitor for the grand finale.
Minor update. Its been raining 3-4 days in a row and the weather doesn't permit me to finish this as soon as I wanted. Its dragging a 4-5 day job into more than a week as its very hard to get it dried.

http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll123/sunbeamksi/Paperazzi%20Speaker/Image000.jpg
More probably in a couple of days after its fully dried. OK, now its raining again. Dammit
Weird.. this time the same can of spray paint didn't turn purple to pink. *scratches ass repeatedly* I tested a lil on the centre part and it turned out alright. So did the whole thing for the speaker base with the same can. Both are done now.

I decided to chuck in 2 old UV CCFLs behind the LCD when I mod it so I inserted these old UV sleeve into the tubes. Well, I find it will be kinda boring if everything's brown-purple-brown-purple so I used green instead.

Thats all for now people. I'd be on a hiatus for approximately 8-9 days starting today till next Sunday for my trip. Hopefully I can grab some weird stuffs when I'm out of the country hehe. See you all when I come back. With the LCD mod starting.
http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll123/sunbeamksi/Paperazzi%20Speaker/Image017.jpg
Believe me mate, I know exactly how you feel. 2 week break than only 11 days left of school forever W00T!!!
Somehow I have missed this mod until just today. That's amazing work, all the detail and with paper mache no less. +rep.
Thanks people. Ok, have evaluated some stuffs. I'm not going to continue with the LCD mod for Paperazzi. As a trial & error case, I'll leave the LCD for the next mod which will be of a larger scale than this one. And on the other hand I can't afford to fork out 500 bucks my money (for even a 17 inch LCD monitor only) or more everytime I start a new mod. So yeah, the fun ends here  .
And I just got the prize pack from AC Ryan 4 hours ago via Fedex (BT's MoTM thing). So thanks to some voters who are from TBCS hehehe  I'll be back pretty soon I guess, once a job offer is laid in front of me, I'll go splurge on a new case to cut :D . This time at least my tools are repaired. And I got some nice AC Ryan stuffs to throw in
Thats all from me guys, but I won't go POOF from this great place. Just kinda busy running around lately. K now the admin can chuck this into Finished Worklog section. :bunny:
