View Full Version : A Thin Membrane

What can I use as a thin membrane to sit directly against the bottom of the motherboard, so I don't have to use stand offs?
I've not done it but mica sheet maybe? It's not conductive and heat resistant. Check mcmaster.com. I'd think air flow would be a problem though.

I'd imagine that you could, as long as you don't penetrate through whatever membrane that you might have.

I just came back from Home Depot.
I saw some flexible sheet PVC. I think it is used as roofing liner.
It was in the section near the roof vents.

Most power supplies have a thin sheet of plastic, as Eclecticos described. That's what I'd use (and have used, but not for permanent installations).

Foam and rubber would work.

What about a sheet of plexiglass? If you can allow for a bit of thickness you could just screw the motherboard right into the plexi most likely.

add some washers into the mix so the soldier points arent pressing into the plexi and i think that'd be the best solution.

Most Car Graphics/ Sign making Vinyl is non conductive. I've used it in the past to insulate the solder side of custom PCB's when the enclosure is to tight for stand offs. The best approach is to stick the vinyl to the bottom of the enclosure where the board is to be mounted. Sticking the vinyl to the bottom of the PCB is an option, it's just harder because of all the solder points you have to get around. You can get the vinyl off Ebay pretty cheap, Some local sign shops may sell you some, but you'll pay allot more for it. Paint mask/ frisket is too thin, and the solder will puncture it.
Good Luck,
