View Full Version : I need some spray paint
I need a black paint that I can put on aluminum, that will form a hard layer when it dries, and will be scratch reistant. Any personal suggestions? I was looking at some glossy rustoleum. Not sure how well it would work though. So yeah, any paint recommendations?

Look into some of the auto paints, for high temperatures and engine blocks. They're pretty durable and shouldn't scratch too much.

I agree. Automotive paint would probably be best.
Dupli-color (http://www.duplicolor.com/index.html) has a long list of designer, and specialty spraypaints.
High Performance Caliper Aerosol Paint to spray a nice, even protective coating. Resistant to heat, chipping, chemicals and brake dust. Available in 5 colors
After reviewing the list of paints, I think caliper paint is your best bet. Link (http://www.duplicolor.com/products/caliperaero.html)

I really wish I had a Duplicolor supplier around here. I manage to pick up some of their Mirage paints (the 3 piece set; primer, color change base and clear) at a garage sale for $5 new which was a steal. I need to find something to use it on though. Time for another mod!

Yea I know. The spraypaint selection around here is preddy lame also.
You'd be lucky to find the same color twice. You could probably talk to the manager at an auto parts store, or somewhere similar, and have them order it for you. Or possibly stock that particular paint brand, but you would probably have to pay upfront, and wait for it. I figure why the hell do that when you can just order it online. :D
eck how much does the caliper paint costs? seen duplicolor products in ace hardware but not really sure if they have caliper

There is also a spray primer for aluminum, I think Krylon makes it. "Bare Metal primer" i used it on some mods, works well. I would also buff the aluminum so the primer has more teeth to bite into. painting aluminum is prone to scratches, unless you are very patient and let the paint cure for a couple of weeks.
So how about sanding the aluminum with a fine grit paper, spraying on an auto primer, letting it sit for a day and then using some regular Krylon black paint and then letting that sit for a day or two? Think that'll work and make it alright to handle?

Just found this on "CaseModBlog.Com (http://www.casemodblog.com)"
Looks like a fantastic tutorial for painting a PC Chassis.

For scratch resistence, like already mentioned, you can't beat powder coating.
