Ok, I couldn't find anything here or on google so I'm starting a thread. I have a computer setup to be primarily a file/music computer so when I need to do something on my computer I don't lose my important files, pictures and music. What I would like to do is make it so I can have media player or ever Winamp start up with windows and have another program running like a server so I can control using a client software on mine and my wifes computer. The file server sits right next to the stereo and I have the sound plugged into it so being able to play our music library on the stereo from our desktops or even the laptop would be great. Any ideas out there?

VNC would be my first choice - http://www.realvnc.com/products/free/4.1/index.html
Remote Desktop second - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsXp/using/mobility/getstarted/Remoteintro.mspx
Girder if you want to get crazy with it. http://www.promixis.com/

That's before looking at winamp plugins currently available, I think this is what you're describing

VLC was pretty much developed with that in mind. I have VLC installed on a PC that is hooked to a projector. You can specify that when VLC starts up it launches an http interface which has its own built in webserver. So what I do is have the projector machine start up VLC with the http interface, then I can use either my main machine or my PDA as a remote to start up the video, pause, fast forward, rewind, load media, playlist and adjust the volume. Works like a charm!
