So, Firefox 3 in vista running on broadband is painfully slow. I scanned for viruses...but there were none. Firewalls disabled, didn't work. I also tried the TCP auto tuning fix, still the same. I need some help guys.

Get rid of Firefox 3.

I'm not a fan of it, I'm still using 2.0.0.16 and its flawless.

I'm thinking that it might be his modem. The speedstream one that at&t gives you for free sucks.

This is my modem:

How old is it? My one that AT&T gave me would be really slow sometimes, then speed up a few hours later. I also have a friend, and his did that before it eventually got too bad to use. He also had to have AT&T come out to do something once, when all that he could get working was instant messaging, because the connection was so bad.

Do a speed test. Is IE faster?

If IE is faster, it's firefox, otherwise, it's your modem or router if you have one. Clean firefox's cache and do a disc cleanup, that sometimes helps.

Well, I installed Ubuntu for the time being. It works like a charm! My modem is only a couple months old though, and it has wireless built in(I disabled it.).

Maybe, you'll just have to re-install windows, or repair your installation.

Yeah....but hopefully not. Other people are having this problem too.

there are some bugs lots of people are complaining about it.. you can try changeing the settings in it do do more then 1 conection to a page that should speed it up a bit

This is going to sound weird but I have heard from my teacher that if you have a wireless router some times the wired is slower then wireless becuase it is not really made to use wired. I also suggest down grading to Fire Fox 2 it dosent have some of the bugs. Also make sure your router settings are right.

I also tried the TCP auto tuning fix

If you mean you used TCPOptimizer on Vista there is no point. It will slow down Vista's network performance significantly, sometimes by more than 50%. The settings that TCPOptimizer changed in former versions of windows are dynamically managed by Vista and it does so very well.

You need to revert back to the original settings. More info in this thread: Vista TCP/IP Management - Don't Use TCPOptimizer (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11873)
