straight to the point i'm putting a HTPC together and im trying to get all the parts for $500 AUD maybe 600 if i have to so far ive found it difficult becuase every time i get all the parts within my price range i realise ive forgotten an important part like ram anyway heres a list of parts i want
Case (not a tower case)
mobo
gfx card (if i need one for a htpc)
cpu (dont really care what as long as it does the job)
HDD (preferably sata with NCQ and bigger the better)
PSU (unless i use an old ****ty one)
ram (i think 512meg of ram should do it tell me if im wrong)
DVD burner (u cant have a HTPC without one lol :P)
and finally of coarse a tv tuner card (if i get a HD card can i still view it on my tv?)

thats it unless ive forgotten something again LoL. any help someone can give me with brands names prices or even help me sort out exactly what to get to reach my goal of a HTPC for around 500 AUD would be great thanks. P.S it will be only used on my tv but will that make the image quality of videos bad?

I don't think you could get anything decent for $500. A $1000 maybe, but not $500.

you could probably do it for 500. You can run it opn an old pentium 3. You only need speed for gaming. Ive seen old dells like 8 hundred somthing megahertz go for like 150. Then all you need are a couple of tuners and a newer os, maybe wmce and a couple of capture programs and your set.

EDIT: MAJOR ERROR EVERYTHING BELOW IS USD. SORRY!!!

i compilled a list of what i would get if i was gonna build and htpc
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815127001 $134
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815116310R $99
http://www.discountpc.net/details.asp?id=10754&from=home $119
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822140155 $117
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820223038 $61
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827129164

total is 570 minus shipping, os, and remote control
Its not the harddrive type you wanted but its tons cheaper

edit: it comes to about 770 in AUD. You could cut some of the money off buy not getting 2 tuners. I guess skip the hdtv one, since im assuming you dont have one.

i was already looking at a scpecific HDTV tuner its a hybrid so it has both digital and analog capabilities (which is good for me cos im planning in getting a HDTV soon) also the gigabyte mobo i was checkin out has an onboard gfx card so thats sorted. as for the cput i was just gonna go with maybe something ****ty like the amd 3000+ S939 should be more than enough for a htpc and i think i may have psu ,ram and a spare dvd burner lying around somewere in my heap of "good parts that arent good enough for my actual pc" box so yeah still works out a bit more than 500 rofl ah well i huess ill bite the bullet and spend about 1k on it.
