I rang up microsoft so that I could activate my copy of halo 2 (had to format several times). I put in the number that you are told to enter into the phone, then it read another back. It then said "Congradulations, you have successfully activated your copy of xp". It said xp, when I was activating halo 2. This could be a way of getting free keys to xp lol.

Last time I installed my copy of XP I didn't even have to call them up, it just activated. Something tells me they a) don't care anymore or b) are using their tech "support" for Vista.

They're not selling the retail version anymore, so they probably don't care too much at this point.

Well, the copy of halo 2 activated alright with the code it gave me, so it must have been a halo 2 key.
It doesnt matter if they have stopped selling it, they still need the activation service running. I could have brought a copy in may, then not use it for another 3 years and the activation should still work.

Sounds like a typographical bug that may or may not get fixed in the future. From what I understand, MS products are very modular from a coding standpoint. That means a lot of the base code is similar, such as the activation module.

After X number of years, Microsoft usually just allows all activation to go through, legitimate or not.
I believe Win2k is at this stage.
XP Shouldn't be, not yet.
Maybe it was an accident, maybe somebody is a dolt, who knows.

Actually, I think windows xp is the first one that requires activation.

Yup nevermind, anything prior to XP did not require activation.
And even at the beginning of XP, it didn't do that.
