Well so far I have tried 3 different distros of linux(popular ones at that):Fedora, Ubuntu, and Mandriva

Fedora said right on boot(didnt even get to boot screen) that there was a kernal panic. Ubuntu gets to the boot screen(Yay!) Then laughs in my face as it goes into kernal panic in the middle of boot. Mandriva was the worst , it gives me the beutiful boot screen then loads all the way. I got so exited. But then, it goes to a black sceen with a white dash in the top left corner and just freezes.Woopdydoo. Does linux just hate me or am i doing something wrong.

I'd try looking on the linux forums to see if you have some kind of weird hardware conflict. I assume you had no issues doing the installation of any them. Maybe you're hitting a bad sector on the hard drive? I'll try to dig up some things and see what I can find on other forums.

You could try Debian. It's what Ubuntu is based off of. Really, I don't know what to tell you. Like Killa_Ape said, you might have some weird hardware conflict. How old is the motherboard that you're trying it with?

Im actually downloading Debian right now! The mobo is about 2-4 years old. One of the funny things is right before i get kernal panic in ubuntu, on the bottom it says kernal alive.

EDIT: Just tried debian, complete fail

Specific hardware?

I've only had a few occasions when some sort of Linux flat out wouldn't work; I just got an Ubuntu LAMP up on a P4 HP workstation. Have you tried like, the Ubuntu Alternate install CD? It isn't a LiveCD so if it was a problem with X11 you should still be able to install.

Well ive used: Ubuntu Live CD and Wubi, Mandriva Live CD, Debian Live CD and Fedora Live CD. So far none of these have worked.

Did you have anything on the computer before? Try wiping it completely with dban (http://dban.sourceforge.net).

I've had similar issues with video drivers.. what card do you have? Try VGA mode, and see if that works for you.

Well i Tried in safe graphics mode, no help. Im going to go test the live cd on my mom's laptop(even though my ISO burner and the ubuntu CD Checker said theres no problems with the burn)

EDIT:

=( Turns out the CD was fine, as a matter of fact the live cd ran like 3 times faster then my windows in on a hard drive.

what make/model of mobo are you using? I had heard of a "bug" that affected specific mobo BIOS chips. The bug seemed to specifically kill LINUX due to how they are structured. There is a fix to it, but it is not for the faint of heart. Maybe to a google search for your mobo manufacturer and linux.

Like others have said, specs of the system please. Mobo, Video card, hard drives, optical drive.

I dont really know, the mobo is an unnamable crap intel mobo that was made specifically for my pc, an integrated gpu and a geforce 5200 fx(the 5200 is turned on and the integrated is disabled. HDD all i know is it's 160gb. the optical drive is a dvd+- writer/cd- writer, and a dvd rom. The writer is 4x.

What is the make and model number of the PC? That's a good starting point, and some detective work will get us answers for the rest.

I finally found out the hardware.

Well, it turns out that the problem was the mobo. I was reading around on another forum. Someone had an hp with the exact same mobo. He tried everything with no results. Now look at his last post:

Ok well I offically got fed up with trying to install this OS. I went out and did a little upgrading, well pretty much went out and got a new Mobo. Success! SuSE 10.3 is up and running! I wonder what the problem might have been, I have a feeling it was something to do with the mobo, it was an HP computer. Switched that out and it works like a dream now.

Still confused as to what it might have been. Not that it really matters now that its working but it still kinda urks me that I had to go out and get a new mobo (which its 100% better than the one that was in there) to get this to work lol.

*sorry for the double post*

Hiya

Well it looks like newest SuSE is better then before - many people like it and works better then other distros.

Anyway
Have you seen this thread? (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=6112)
Especialy 3rd post.

By the way, I had to pass the parameter 'nolapic' to the kernel at boot from GRUB, otherwise the system would hang halfway through booting.

Google around grub and nolapic options and try to play with it.
Sometimes this makes OS stop at start or at the end when closing.

Good luck with Tux

Try it on your stock graphics if you have them. The old MX4000 card I had wouldn't load Ubuntu cause it had VESA driver issues.

I'm sorry Noop, I forgot all about this thread. It quickly became my experience that HP boards do not like any OS other than Micro$oft stuff. I'm working on trying to find a workaround, but I'm beginning to think that without some major hardware hacking, it very well might not be possible at all to get it to work properly.

In order to get Ubuntu 8.04 to work on my HP branded ASUS board, I had to leave a live CD in the optical drive and make sure that I selected "boot from first hard drive". It worked, but it is also a major pain in the ass.
