Hi, my name is Nick. This is going to be my first computer case mod. I've done small things before with computer cases, but this will be my first "project". I like the idea of having something very unique and different. Not looking like a normal case. So I've come up with a pretty good idea of what I'm wanting to do. But I will need some different idea's as I go. I don't have pictures of what the case looked liked assembled before I started painting, sorry. But now I have a camera to start. I will add updates to this post as I go. So keep checking back to this one. Pictures will of course be added in seperate post's as I go. You all, I'm sure, know how it goes. Hope you all enjoy! And, again, I'm completely open to suggestions!
Flimsy Idea:
I want to have a rocky surface here and there. Think of slime over coming the case, but instead its rock. I don't have my scanner working right now, so I can't scan my sketch's, but I will try to take pictures. That is the only real way you'll understand what I'm talking about. I've already began painting, I'm mid way through it.

Here are the sketch's:
On the first picture, the drawing at the bottom of the page is what I'm going for. The other ones don't show the reservoir.

Welcome to TBCS! I'm curious, what colors is it going to be when finished?

oh looks a lil like the doom mod this could be great

Yes, I was thinking of basing it around a doom theme. So I think I'm going to do it now. The right panel (without the window) is going to be striped yellow and black diagonally. The bezel is going to be red. The panel with the window is going to be painted as though it has been rusting. That goes for the striped panel and front bezel as well. In side are two 12" cold cathode UV lights. I'm also working on a circuit that will randomly flash a white light inside, to look as though a light is flickering. Should be pretty fun getting all of this together. I just out some clear coat on today, and I still have some cutting to do. Next week I should be starting on the rocky surface's, if not the end of this week. Thanks, and check back!
EDIT:
Oh, and behind the "sewer pipe" coming from the bezel on the front will be a red fan.

Okay, I got a lot done today! I got the window cut, the other panel painted, and the front cut. I still have to sand the edges of the window, and find liner for it... could i get that at auto zone? what is it called? Well, here are the updated pictures from the original case to what it is now.

I figured, to give it a rusty look around certain parts, I would burn down some steel wool in water, then crush it to a fine powder to get powdered rust! Then spray on some clear coat, and sprinkle it on to it. Should that work? Or is there a better way?

That sounds like an innovative approach. I'd try it out on a test piece first just to see how it looks.
You can also buy paint that interacts with air that gives a rust effect. One of the members here did a Bioshock mod and used it. Turned out pretty cool.

Some progress today! I started the bondo work on the bezel getting those gaps closed up, and the "sewer pipe" held in place. I think im going to go get styrofoam and make the "rocky" surface from that, then put a coat of fiber glass resin on it. That should be a LOT easier then making it all out of bondo, see as how half the case will be covered in this "rock". I also painted the window panel black.
Window panel. I'm going to etch the biohazard symbol into the back of it this weekend.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20034.jpg
I put the styrofoam blocks on in there for the bondo to sit on something.

Most of it is covered now. I left plenty of room, though, for the tubes, and usb ports.

http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20031.jpg
Covered up the usb port holes, I'll sand it later.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20032.jpg
I removed the styrofoam blocks after the bondo dried.

This took almost an hour to do this little amount.

Okay, for the "rust" effect, I bought some Metallic Textured Hammered Rustoleum spray paint (copper color), and sprayed it all over the window panel, then I put on some black, then more rustoleum stuff. And immedialty took a newspaper and kind of rubbed it on it, letting the black show through... it looks pretty good, put I think I should of gone without putting on the rust stuff first, and just put on more black, then the rusto stuff. I'll try again later.

Great work with the side panel. The approach that you took goes by a couple of names--wrinkle effect is one, it is also referred to as a granite effect. Check out Ed Hubbs on Youtube; his airbrushing skills will blow your mind.
And that etch is top notch. What size etching bit did you use?

I just got done working with some fiber glass resin, man that was annoying! Well, this is what it looks like so far... like crap. But after the rest is covered, and painted, it will look good.
I shaved down the bondo i put on the usb ports here.

What would be the best way to make rocks for this? I'm going to use the fiberglass for the main body, but I think I want it a little more rocky.

Okay guys, I just got done with adding the fiberglass to the bezel. I hated it! haha, no... really... that sucked. O well, at least it's done. For the rocks everywhere else, I think I'm just going to use some type of clay... I'm just worried about it cracking after it has dried, should I be? Well, here are the pictures of the bezel, as well as pics of Gustav's side hittings, and pics of something really neat I did last night unexpectedly! ;)
If you can't tell because of the camera, it is the monster on the front of the Doom3 xbox case. It turned out better then I thought.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20055.jpg
Then I decided to through an LED module on there real quick. I think this might be the front of my homemade reservoir.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20056.jpg
Ah, Gustav! You silly thing!

http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20059.jpg
I laid out the fiberglass cloth first to see where I needed to put it.

http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20062.jpg
Then I snapped on the gloves and through on the resin! Again, turned out better then I thought it would.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20063.jpg
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20064.jpg
You can't tell here, but I added more styrofoam to the side for support with the second layer of fiberglass.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20065.jpg
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20066.jpg
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20067.jpg
Here, I added more to cover up the rest of the "blank" spots on the side.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20068.jpg
http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20069.jpg
And the bezel is done for the most part!

http://www.fileden.com/files/2006/6/25/87371/BHP%20071.jpg
Tomorrow I'll do some trimming with my Dremel, just to shape it around a little, and then put a base coat of white on everything. I'm also going to buy some clay to fill in a few spots. And if anyone knows whether I should be worried about the clay cracking after cured, please let me know how I should prevent it... or am I thinking about the cheap stuff?

I just got done with the bezel. I still have to paint the guard for the sewer pipe and put that on. But today, i collected some rocks, and threw them on with some bondo, painted it white, then black, then added a layer of brown, and a layer of orangish oil paint. It's going to take a day or two to dry, but I have to wait for my water cooling and lights to get in before I can finish the top.
Put on a coat of primer:

Hey guys, I ordered the water cooling and UV lights a few days ago. The water cooling should be here by tuesday... don't know about the UV lights though.. Below are the links to lights and water cooling.
Cooler Master Aquagate Duo (http://www.directron.com/rlm4ae7e3gp.html)
12in Dual UV Cold Cathode Kit (http://www.xoxide.com/cathode.html)
Once I get the water cooling in, I can start working on the top of the case!
