So this just started happening a week or so ago...when my PC (using XP) goes to screensaver, and then you wigggle the mouse to bring it out of the screen saver, it takes FOREVER. It first goes to that blue log in screen, but the user names aren't there. It takes about two minutes for those to show up, and then another two minutes or so before you can actually click on one to log back in. wtf?! Has anyone had this problem before?

Let me guess.. this problem coincides with the installation of SP3.

you know what....now that you mention it, the morning this started happening I noticed that my computer had restarted due to Microsoft "Updating my computer." I take it this is a common problem then....
I'll try a system restore and see if that fixes it. Thanks SgtM!

I've had SP3 installed since it was leaked. I've never had that problem.

I would sugjest doing a registry scann and see if that helps.

NP.. I'm about ready to dump it too. I've noticed that it takes increasingly longer to access folders and drives since installing it, and it's bugging the hell out of me.

I did a little reading and found that a lot of people seem to think that SP3 serisouly contributes to fragmenting your HDD. So I went and took a look at my new HDD that's not even 6 months old (most of my downloading and deleting is done on a seperate HDD) and I would say a good third of the bar was red...I've never seen anything like it. I defragged it, but it's still running slow...

Hmm...I'm running SP3 and haven't noticed any major hindrances due to it. Makes me wonder how much hardware is playing into the situation as well...

I would try a program called C Cleaner. (http://www.ccleaner.com/) It's very handy to have. It cleans the registry, temporary files, and anything that might be slowing things down. Also try a regular defrag and check if lots of background programs are running or any that you have recently installed. I remember Norton brought my grandpa's laptop to a dead halt.

I haven't noticed any problems since installing SP3, but after reading this, and I haven't had it installed for long, and I defragmented not too long before I installed it, there was a ton of red. I guess that only time will tell if it's just from the installation, or the pack itself that causes it.

Turn off the screen saver, and adjust your power management settings.
Start -=> Control Panel -=> Performance and Maintenance -=> Power Options.

You can also turn it off by right clicking on the desktop.
Properties -=> Screen Saver -=> Power Options -=>
Then set the time to "never".

Or, on the screensaver tab, uncheck on resume, display welcome screen, if you really want your screensaver.
