Back again for my second mod, this one is gonna be something different. Like the title suggests, this mod is gonna feature a cascade.
Heres the case I'm starting with:
http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo340/amd_killa/cascade/R0108271-03.jpg
I'm gonna spray it black, put a window in it, and some fans. Got any ideas? Let me hear em' !
I'm gonna have a DVD drive in the top 'holder', with the 'cascade' in the bottom three. I have designed the cascade in sketchup.
http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo340/amd_killa/cascade/Sketchup01.png
I havent included the pump in the drawing. Basically, the bottom part acts as a resivoir, and the pump pushes the water up to the top. It then runs down the front and around the letters back into the resivoir. I put a step-like piece on the back of the cascade so that the water will flow evenly down the front.
I should get the window cut and fitted tonight, and maybe start on the cascade. I need to pop to B&Q to get some stuff for the case;). Should be able to go tomorrow. Should have an update by around tuesday.

I'm glad my initial assumption was wrong. This should be good...

I should use that as my next project, fit the pc in the box. I saw someone do it with an XP box, should work with a cascade box ;).

OK, I brought what I thought was plexi, turns out to be polystyrene. I got the 4mm stuff. I'm used to the 2mm stuff, and attempted to cut the 4mm stuff with a jigsaw. Only problem was that the blade melted the polystyrene, then it glued itself back together again. My grandad is coming over tomorrow with something that should cut it. He didnt mention what it was. (He has lots of tools - retired builder).
Should be starting the paint job on the front panel if I dont come up with ny more ideas.
I've decided to make a hinged side panel. Should finish cutting the same panel tomorrow, and making the window for it too, which I will use the 2mm polystyrene for.
Not sure what else I have planned for this mod. The only thing I planned for this mod was the cascade, which I have changed the plan for now anyway.
Check this thread for an update at the weekend XD
Not sure if it'll work for your polystyrene but I've had luck putting masking tape on the backside of the line when cutting polystyrene. It keeps it from gluing back together.

i've had the same problem. i heard putting water on it while you cut will also keep it from gluing back together. haven't actually tried that though. let me know if you do try it

Here is a little trick I used when I cut my styrene for Motorized Madness on my scroll saw. -keep a bottle of dust remover (air) nearby and turn it upside down. as you cut, spray a little air on the blade. it will actually freeze it and keep it cold for a little while. -this will prevent it from melting. just a little goes along way. the only problem is it stinks.

Thanks for the advice guys.
Spidy88, I wouldent really mix water and jigsaw, I'd probably find a use for my RCCB if I did.
renderman, thanks for the heads up on the compressed air. I might try that if the tool my grandad is bringing round doesnt help.

Anyway back on topic. LOL when you said cascade I thought you were referring to a phase change cascade cooler lol. I like the idea but I can see that whole waterfall/cascade feature being a flow killer. Perhaps intergrating a seperate pond pump would be better.

Well I was thinking of running it as a stand alone feature seperate from water cooling loops (thats if I use one).
A bit like what I m doing with my other project (Project:MDF MoDiFy). That is a dedicated pump pushing blue coloured water round some pvc piping with silver glitter.
I have a new workbench ! I'll get round to taking a picture of it tomorrow.
I now have the window cut out, and I have pretty much finished the front panel. It just needs priming and painting, then the front panel will be finished. I then have to start on the cascade.
The problem with the polystyrene is over. I managed to get hold of a stanley knife. Here's a piccy.

This thing cuts nicely. I think I might hve to get some more blades, but it works alright for the moment. Updates as and when I can XD

Well, finally some project pictures!
Here's a couple of pictures of the case before I started working.

http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo340/amd_killa/cascade/Photo012.jpg
As you can see, I still have quite a way to go with the filing.
http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo340/amd_killa/cascade/Photo023.jpg
Half the filing done.
http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo340/amd_killa/cascade/Photo022.jpg
A couple of pictures to show the case so far.

I have a slight problem.
http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo340/amd_killa/cascade/Photo028.jpg
There is a small gap between the side of the case, and the front panel. Neither of the panels are screwed in, so hopefully it will push together once they are.
When we made space for the new desk, we kind of had to shove everything else together.
http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo340/amd_killa/cascade/Photo025.jpg
These pictures are the same pictures from my other project.

http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo340/amd_killa/MoDiFy/Photo029.jpg
Here's the thickness of the polystyrene I have to cut against a pencil.
http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo340/amd_killa/cascade/Photo030.jpg
Well, I should finish the filing tomorrow. I have some fans and other pieces coming from ebuyer in the morning. My grandad is dropping off a hole cutter, so I can cut the holes for my fans. Anyone know where I can get some of that U-shaped stuff for my window over here in the UK?

Hey, cut me some slack, it's my first modding case, I didnt want to spend too much incase I mess it up. For my next project I will go with something a little more expensive, maybe an antec or something similar. I think it has potential.
To be honest, it's not necessarily what you think, but what I think XD.
Could you reccomend me a couple of cases for my next project?

Thanks for your support. I am thinking of having this project as a server running windows home server. Not sure on hard disk space yet, but I have sort of planned the rest of the components.
AMD Sempron LE-1200 Socket AM2 2.1GHz Energy Efficient 512KB L2 Cache Processor
Gigabyte GA-MA69VM-S2 690V Socket AM2 Motherboard
2 x 1GB 800MHz DDR2 (not sure of brand yet, and may add more later, the MB supports 4 slots)
Onboard VGA is fine, as is going to be used primarily as a server.
Probably 1/2 TB of hard disk space. 1TB if I can afford it. (4x250GB)
I have some pictures of the work I did today. So far, I have cut the holes for the fans in the side of the case, nearly finished filing down the side panel. I have test fitted the fan controller, and the front 120mm fan.
I will upload the pictures tomorrow, as I have to get up for college in the morning XD
Hey, cut me some slack......
sorry, i didn't mean to offend, i got that case as it was cheap and i vowed to never get it again,
i can't really say what cases are good to start with for a cheap case, i've always bought cheap cases from computer fairs for about £25 ($50) it can be ok to work with if you take your time and are careful, as with the gap at the front i found that bending the back lip will make the gap close up when your tighten the screws.

Yea I know what you mean. Sorry about my earlier post, I was tired XD
I have taken it slow, it took me all week to file out the window XD
I think I'm nearly ready to paint the case. After that, all I have to do is fit the hardware that I already have, and make the cascade part of the case.
i would give you some rep but i have to spread it around first,

Because you know how hard the case is to work with? XD
I finally have all the hardware to run this system, but I still need a pump.
I'm gonna test all the hardware today, and make sure it's all working.
yea i know what a pig that case can be.

Well, I managed to finish the window and the holes for the fans. I have fitted all the equipment to test it, and is currently downloading all the updates for 2000 server. This thing is real quiet when I use the fan controller to turn down the fans.
I need to do some serious cable management. I'll post some pictures as soon as I get my bluetooth adapter to work with 2000 server XD

XcOM, did you ban my brother's account on TBCS? His username was tbulmer. I hear he sent you a rather abusive message. He's now maoning at me to beg you to re-instate it.
If you do decide to re-instate him, please give him a couple of days before doing so. That should teach him. He's really annoyed that he cant access TBCS, as he was logged in, and cant log out as the logout button doesnt work XD
EDIT: Thanks for the +rep. You didnt offend, I was just a little moody from lack of sleep XD

Nope, he was banned by administration. We don't appreciate that garbage here and have no patience for it. As for the comment about the quality of the case, I think it's rather unimportant what the factory quality is. What matters is what you make out of it, and I like your plans so far!

Thanks for the support. It might be a while before I get the cascade part finished as I have already setup win 2000 server on it, and remote desktoping to it XD. I'll finish it as soon as I get the paint, and when I can be bothered to make the cascade part. College is taking up most of my time at the moment. That, and repairing other people's pc. But it brings in some extra funds for modding XD

I have spoken to him about this. He says he's gonna create a new account. I'm gonna block his username from accessing the signup page (running a web proxy on my server XD). I know that TBCS is blocked from his school, so between school and home, he doesnt really have a way of signing up XD

Neither does my college, but my brother's school has apparently blocked TBCS by ip address. I could tell my brother to use my proxy server, but he only wants to create a new account after his other one was permenantly banned as stated earlier.

As for cascade, I havent really done much more work to it. I have finished all the filing. I put the case together with all the hardware to make sure that it's all working, but I havent really bothered to take it all down again. It's currently running windows 2000 server. I didn't see the point in setting up active directory, but I have set up remote desktop over my local network.
i tried settingup an active directory (Domain) but every machine that tried to login to it took over 15 minutes, that was an old P3 800MHz with 2gb of ram, even when i tried it on my AMD Athlon64 3000+ with 4gb ram and gigabit network it took freeking ages for anyone else to login,
Maybe i did something wrong, don't know?

Did the client pc(s) have the server set as the primary DNS server?
I had 2003 server running on an old 800MHz with 512MB of RAM, and logged in with an XP Professional client with same specs. It logged in within 10 seconds. This was on a 10baseT network :S
Mine was super fast, and yet others doing the same setup took ages, I dont know why mine was soo fast, considering that server 2003 took 2 minutes to boot.
it might be because the primary DNS was still set to the router, next time i will plug the internet into the server, and share the internet, but use the router as an access point.
Thanks for the tip
