Nowadays, RAM available for a laptop is pretty much around the capacity as for a desktop. So with the ever increasing amount of stuff on modern motherboards, why don't they make more room by shrinking the size of RAM? You could double the amount of memory slots on a motherboard by using SoDIMMs instead of longer lengthed desktop RAM. What do you think?

Remember that laptop ran sits on it's side. In my opinion, it's only worth it if it's restricting your length.

Remember that smaller things tend to cost more, and the motherboard real estate really is not that "expensive" on most ATX and microATX boards when compared to a laptop or miniITX board. They do have upright mounting laptop DIMM sockets, they are typically only found on miniITX boards.

also sodims don't run as fast as normal DIMMS'

you can't overclock laptop ram as much as desktop ram, the latency is also generally higher.

over all the peformance from SODIMMS is not at the same level of normal DIMMS to warrent using them in the desktop area.

SFF yes it would be a good idea and i have seen a few boards with SODIMM slots on them, they are designed for SFF multimedia PC's, and there normally accepted as the norm on Mini-ITX and smaller.
