Turning on PSU w/out mobo

I posted a question to the PSU thread that i now notice i should have probably posted here :p I did some more research and found out that to turn the PSU without a mobo all i need to do is jump the connection between the GRN power on pin with any of the BLK GND pins on the ATX 24-pin connector. My question now being whether i could simply wire in a switch to the two pins and control the on/off with that switch? it seems like it should work but i want to make sure so i don't fry a brand new PSU. lol :)

that would work, though i would recomend finding out what the other connections do because in order to keep it on for long periods of time you may have to make other connections.

Yes that would work. (Non-monitary switch)

You will need a slight load on the PSU (Ie a Fan plugged in to it).


I did it with my spider project when I had the shell out side for Halloween. (Look at the last part of my work log to see what I did)

Computer use a Momentary Switch and the computer keeps the conection between the Green and Ground alive while the computer is on. For what you are doing you will need a non-momentary swtich as the switch will need to keep the conections open on the PSU. standard Toggle switch should work rated at least 10A

this would be for short periods of time just to test out lighting and motor setups for the cases that i'm working on.

yep it works, that how tech support wanted me to test my PSU when it fried. "Take a paper clip and stick it in the green plug". Lol, thought he was crazy at the time, but now thats how I set up fans and stuff :p
