When Modder’s Block hits…

Ever get that feeling of not knowing how to proceed with a mod? Yeah, of course you have. It never fails, you get a good head of steam going, and then BLAM! Brick wall. And if you try to continue, chances are you’re just going to screw something that is very important to your mod up.
<!--break-->
You don’t want that.

There are many different ways to handle modder’s block, but one of the best ways imaginable is to take a trip down memory lane and review the mods that got us into the modding scene to begin with. With this in mind, I present to you once again:

TIP 3000 (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2351)

Forum Admin DaveW commenced work on his gaming rig, the TIP 3000, back in March of 2006, after feeling the urge to do some “real work”, as he put it on the first page of his worklog. Page by page, the TIP 3000 slowly took shape, and our Scottish friend showed us that he had (and most likely still has) what it takes to put out a top notch mod. Plans were included for what he dubbed “The Integration” but health and school got the best of him.

Lots can be learned from this mod, here’s a few of the highlights:

Bondo ships to over 100 countries. Scotland isn’t one of them.

New mods almost always require a new Dremel at some point.

DaveW’s mom has “terrible taste in tableware”. :D

Sometimes, a hammer is necessary. Especially if metal gets buckled.

Mods need mascots. Otherwise you are doomed.

If your bondo isn’t mixed properly, bust out the epoxy. There is hope yet.

I won’t lie to you: this is one of the mods that got my creative juices flowing. Sure, mods like Doom3, TribalOverkill’s wicked reservoirs, and Defyant’s HP series of mods are taking the concept of modding to the next level (and inspiring a ton of new modders every day to boot), but TIP 3K delivers in a way that appeals to the IT major in me—it follows a set course and does not wander one bit. Dave had a plan for a case, and executed it perfectly. Feature creep might have raised its’ ugly head more than once, but Dave was able to keep those particular demons at bay.

And that, constant reader, is where it’s at. A man, a plan, a computer case and some tools.
