Project : 5th GeN
Building a 29TB monster rig
Well... the time has come to yet again start on a new project, the old one just didnt fit my needs anymore, so decided to give it my all to build a awesome dual pc case, with a additional atom rig to run the upcoming touch screen =)
Anyways, have set some personal goals for this build
* 2 Mainboard spots
* Watercooled
* Removable harddrive rack
* Enough space for atleast 40 disks
* Good radiator
* Only use 250mm fans where its possible
* double PSU area
* Aluminium frame, welded
* Plexiglass exterior
* Silver and black finish, go for style
* Buildt in 2 sections, 1 for main pcs, 1 for radiator and atom PC

Concept - frame
Afraid i havent made a concept for the exterior of the case yet, but atleast have some plans for the looks on the frame itself, have allready been working on the case for a few days, so it didnt really turn out the way i though it would... a sudden burst of creativity came in the way for that part

The water tank
Concept
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/tank1.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/tank1l.jpg)
Would really love to have a watertank that can fill most of the front space of my upcoming rack, and create a nice waterfall effect, guess the total height would end up around 95x5x30cm some place
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/tank.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/tankl.jpg)
The main idea behind this one would be to cut out 40mm holes times 4 in a thick piece of plexiglass, get some rubber rings down there, mill out some space for em, and hopefully get it watertight. The water would travel trough drilled paths and enter / exit in the middle of the block on top and bottom. Plexi with that thickness can easily be mounted to the case too...
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/plexi.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/plexil.jpg)
Allready found a suitable block of plexi 50mm thick -.- god its heavy....
anyways, found a circular saw, and cut it into usefull pieces

The weld
Had the chance to do some welding the previous days, using a mig welder for aluminium, at high voltage, welding corners is a pain, the alu tend to melt in ways you dont want it to
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2172s.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2172.jpg)
4 x 25x25x5000mm square profiles... a total of over 20 meters alu, this would be the base of the case
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2173s.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2173.jpg)
After running them over the cutter, we got some decent cut pieces, in the lenghts required
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2176s.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2176.jpg)
The amount of time this will take is probably endless....
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2175s.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2175.jpg)
Had to get a few pics of the rig doing some of the work too =)
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2177s.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2177.jpg)
The alu lined up and ready for welding
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2178s.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2178.jpg)
Welding in action

One part of the top part of the case done, NEXT!
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2181s.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2181.jpg)
Second part all done and god to go
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2260s.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2260.jpg)
First part of the welding done now, would need to get some sandpaper out , and some paint at some point
At the current state, will the top box be housing the radiator, the mITX, the touchscreen and some fans
Will also have to make some new "feet" between the top and bottom box
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_1969s.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_1969.jpg)
Also got some perforated alu for the disk rack, more on this later
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_1972s.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_1972.jpg)

The radiator and the frame
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2433.jpg
Was able to get some fibersparkle(?) (stuff that gets hard after application)
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2434.jpg
Lotsa open ends in the alu, had to fill all of those up
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2435.jpg
Stashed in the "foam thingy" and sanded it proper to get a good surface for the upcoming paintjob
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2427.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2427l.jpg)
Decided to get a used radiator from some bike or something, partly for the looks, and partly for the killer performance these beasts can give compared to standard computer sized ones. Ended up with a radiator from a 94' mod GPZ 600, though, it needs some love to look good again...
So thought i should make a new shell for it, and spray paint it so it can look somewhat fresh again
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2425.jpg
Perfect! this plate looked to be great regards to what i was looking for
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2426.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2426l.jpg)
Cut it in proper lenght, found a steel tube, and bended it
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2428.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2428l.jpg)
And there we go... a somewhat better looking radiator
The fans
After alot of thinking did i decide to go for 250mm fans for the radiator, these are low noise, push lotsa air, and looks awesome =)
Would also need to pair em up, to ensure that one pair is allways on when one of the computers is shut down... so each comp will be fitted with 2x 250mm for the radiator
Had some 10x10x1mm alu around in the shop that i used for the framework
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2436.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2436l.jpg)
2 fans tightened up
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2437.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2437l.jpg)
First pair done
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2438.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2438l.jpg)
Second pair done
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2439.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/img_2439l.jpg)

And finally, mounted up on the radiator and into the pc frame

The harddrive rack and progress pics
The rack will be build up with steel plates as place holders, self drilling steel bolts, perforated alu for holders, and rubber feet thats isolating vibration. This should ensure a stable , flexible and silent foundation for the disks
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2450.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2450l.jpg)
Bought in a steel plate with 3mm thickness for the base of my harddrive rack, steel can take ALOT more weight then alu, so its proper for this kind of use. Cut it up in the size needed and measured up the holes for the harddrive "slides"
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2446.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2446l.jpg)
Cut up some square alu to fit my needs
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2445.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2445l.jpg)
Attached them to the plate
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2447.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2447l.jpg)
And added a plate in front to keep the upcoming sideplates in place
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2452.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2452l.jpg)
Mounted up with vibration isolating feets
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2449.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2449l.jpg)
Top and bottom holder all ready to use, they are using 6mm bolts to keep them in place
http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2451.jpg (http://www.spinnin-wheel.com/images/stories/kart/christersin/2008/25/img_2451l.jpg)

Cut out the plates for the drives, and fit em in the sliders, these should ensure decent air flow, and enough possibilities to get some disks in there

Havent been able to get my cable sleeves yet, so taped it up for now, just to see how it would fit in there, and to be honest... its a perfect fit ^^ gonna need to make some external USB ports for it though....since the pc will be total enclosed in the top box, invisible behind the black plexi plates

Well... that would just result in less space, no? :P
You would need to sell atleast 3 500gb disks to afford 1 on a terra... as long as its space, enough controllers, why bother ^^
Its gonna be raided to hell anyways, and .... 2 500gb disks perform better then 1 single
Ill get there some day, but the price pr GB havent been good on the terra disks before now...

Cool man, nice progress. I like how you are using the 23cm?? fans for maximum airflow for minimal noise.

This thing looks awesome dude! Do you plan on two keyboards/mouse or will you use a KVM switch for individual computer control? Better yet how bout setting them up in a cluster config. That would make one powerful system! Can't wait to see the finished project.

* Finished the front of the comp
What's left :

Hi all!,
One of those really large updates are finally coming along :P
Been working for 16 hours straight today on this project, so gotten a long way now...
Whats been done
* Finalized water res
* Allmost done with backplates
* Mounted disks and some hardware
* Soldered power circuits and LED's
* Installed Windows on mITX
Whats left
* Get the hoses and mount them up
* Install waterblocks on GFX cards
* Install new mobo
* Install watercooling and water ress
* Install fillport
* Boot it up ^^.
The harddrive rack
Guess this will be the start of stuffing disks in this case =)
Had previously powder coated 4 perforated plates to deal with this one, the disks got tilted somewhat upwards to prevent heat to be trapped in between them... Still have to put down a placeholder in the front of them though, so they dont slide out when the case is being moved, might get some screws and just drill holes and mount them that way too, oh well... ill figure it out
Got about 32 disks in place now, just missing out on 4x 80GB SAS (15k rpm) drives now, and a additional 2x 1TB drives that havent yet arrived, totals out on 22TB when everything is in place, over a total of 40 disks

And one at the bottom :P
The water-ress
It was decided early on that i wanted a large tank up front of the case, however, its been a real pain getting this one made, afraid i didnt have a camera available at the buildprocess but ill try and shorten it down here....
First of all, cut off a few pieces of a large plexiblock i had available, then i milled up 4 holes for the water cylinders, and made a 3mm opening inside the block for the o-ring, that would seal them up...
A normal drill was used to get the water paths within the blocks and locked up by a m8 bolt with sealing tape on it in the end, to ensure it doesnt leak....
However, needed some way to get the water down there, since sideway mounting nipples wont happen :P drilled up two holes on the top and the bottom, centered up within the block to ensure even flow of the water... and nippled em up with o-rings at the bottom...

Fixing up the backplate
Time to do something about the plain look of the backplates on the case =)
As you probably noticed, the other 2 radiators have also arrived, so needed some way to get em decent looking (still need fans and grills though) -.-
Started by measuring up the size of it, cut out a piece in cardboard to check out if it checked up... Went further on with measuring up the plexiglass, and got on with the cutting job.. Gotta love jigsaws.... the results doesnt allways turn out like you want them to... so will have to file down some edges on these soon, but have way to much stuff to do to sit down and do that now :P
So will be a furter update on this one later

Soldering and LED's
God, this had been a time consuming affair...
Bought up 90x LED's - Blue, received them last week, and today, finally ready to start getting them up running, also had to do alot of cable soldering to power up the rest of the fans and leds on the case...
All the light's and some of the fans are directly connected to the 300w PSU for the mITX now
Anyways, guess u guys have decent insight in how this work's so ill let the pics speak for themselves =)

Ah well, a small chapter for itself... Sadly my "old" Abit Quad GT had to be replaced since it werent to happy about running 2x sas controllers for some reason -.-
So ordered up another Asus P5Q premium, should get this one sometime next week
Heres some current pics though of some of the hardware going in there... god i hate full memory cards when ur taking pics -.- so got somewhat limited this time
Also.. the hoses and waterblocks from EK-Waterblocks should arrive the upcoming week! damn, im looking forward to those, starting to close in on completion, FINALLY

The touch
Windows Vista Ultimate x86 - Installed!
Working flawless, need to get some holes for USB ports so it can be easily reached, and install the touch software for it, then its all good to go... And no... the pics aint taken upside down :p
Mounted the screen upside down so the buttons on it wouldnt show when you stand looking at it, its easily rotated in windows, so it was a better solution this time around, since the buttons are so far up on the screen it just wouldnt look good having them popping out, believe i had some wierd cam settings too, the screen is not that white... hmmz...

Price estimation would be something like this =)
2 nicely specced gaming comps - 3000$ish
22 TB of drives is another 2800$
raid controllers close up to a decent 1800$ too...
4x 24" LCD's - 2000$
plexiglass cost around 100$ a square meter over here - 600$
Watercooling - 600$
Aluminium and other stuff 300$
and thats without the work included =)

Whats been done
* New radiators mounted up
* Watercooling in place
* Water ress pressure tested
* Second mobo in place
* EK Waterblocks fitted on 4870 and 4870x2 cards
Whats left
* Case etches, decals
* Cable management
* Get more coolant
* Get lighthing proper
* Fix LEDS
* Fit power buttons
* Fit DVD/RW slimline drive
* Boot it up
* Take some final pics and video of ress in action
The radiators - LEAKING
Last week had lots of frustration in it, when i finally mounted up the watercooling for a test run, it appeared that not one, but TWO radiators were leaking, the large one on the top, and a 240mm radiator at the bottom...
Had to order new ones
http://www.grevaeg.com/images/case08/update2011/IMG_3494.JPG
2x Mist 360 and 1x Mist 240 radiators ordered up with 1/2" nozzles

Unwrapped and good to go
http://www.grevaeg.com/images/case08/update2011/IMG_3496.JPG
Cut out a fitting piece of plexi to hold the double radiators together, ill get some etches on the plexi at a later stage

The watercooling
All of the hoses are now mounted up, and i have done a 24h test run to ensure that its no leaks with a closed loop... the noise level of the pump is just awesome, gotta love full magnetic driven rotors =)
Used 1/2" hoses all the way, with coils at some points to allow bending in steeper angles, also had to fetch a full 24 hose clamps to seal it all up, got clamps thats acid and rust ressistant , and they look somewhat shiny :P
Also got a few liters of Motocool coolant in there, this is a solution that prevent damage to any material, and its temperature ressistant between -54c and up to 135c
Hopefully able to get some temp checks when i get this one booted up, shouldnt be much of a problem to keep it all cold though

wow 250 bucks...
whats the second graph??
The second graph shows how high, in a vertical distance, a pump can push liquid until it basically stalls. Depending on application, higher numbers are almost always better. I used to have an all grain homebrewed beer setup that had a 10 gallon per minute pump that would push up to twelve feet vertically iirc. Obviously, that's a lot of flow, so I had it hooked up to a switch that would allow me to fine tune the throughput. I also had plans at one point to make the homebrewing system fully computer controlled and automated, but after a bit of research, along with the fact that brewing beer was becoming more work than fun (fifteen gallon batches will do that to you if you have to bottle it all--that's roughly six and a half cases of 12 oz bottles), I scrapped the idea.
Who knows though, I might revive that idea down the road.

At current state its not noisy at all, the water flows on the side of the tubes, it doesnt fall straight down, had to drill a few holes to get that done though, it was making really annoying splashing sounds before that 0.o
:O wow

I'm just thinking of all the SATA/Molex power splitters you are going to need for all those drives, and the SATA data cables. Looks like it will require some serious cable management.
Loving how this beast is turning out by the way. I cant imagine what the hell you would do with 22TB of storage space. Are you planning to add more drives in the future, or sticking with 22TB. You could always have an external unit that stores drives and has a seperate power supply. Hurmmmm..... I wonder, would you turn the power on before or after you plug in the data lines? I'm thinking after.

Molex to SATA adapters and RAID controllers, problem solved lol.
The 1200W Thermaltake Toughpower PSU's each have 8 SATA and 8 Molex connectors. That makes 32 connectors in total. The other 16 connectors needed can easily be made up from Molex "Y" splitters and molex to SATA adapters. He could always borrow a few connectors from the 300W Chieftech PSU powering the Atom system. Plus he needs to power the DVD drive.
Attaching the drives to the system may be hard though.
The ASUS P5Q Premium motherboard he is using has connectors for 10 internal SATA drives and a single IDE channel so that is 12 drives in total. The other motherboard, the ASUS P5K Premium, has internal connectors for only 6 SATA drives and a single IDE channel, that makes 10 drives total. So combined both motherboards support 22 drives (18 SATA and 4 IDE). So RAID controllers are definitely needed.
AMD Killa
11-28-2008, 01:01 AM
I think he said that he was going to use a SCSI based controller, as SATA is SCSI compatible, he could then just chain them up. All he would need is the adapters I'm guessing.

Lets get some answers, shall we ? ^^
How to power it up:
Pretty much as you guys described, just y split up the molex for now, and ill have plenty of connections for everything... and the 16 amp rails can easily run whatever you throw at them... could have powered up all my disks with one PSU if i would have wanted =) ill have to get some custom wires going in there at some point, but the finances have kinda stopped before xmas :P
The disks and connection for now
The main rigs :
And no... i replaced the P5K premium with another P5Q premium, so the motherboards are the same now =)
That equals 20 s-ata on the mobo's alone
gonna run 2x 4 port pci s-ata controllers as well on disks that wont be used for anything but storage, since pci get bandwith problems really fast
The rest will be run on SAS controllers, still gathering up some cash to get some decent ones, so gonna run on 4x pci-x1 - 4 channel ones for now, thats a additional 24 disks there =) However, these will be replaced by some LSI 8 series ones as soon as i get some more cash to spend ^^ they have a 1500mhz cpu and 2gb onboard memory, that will help the main comp stress less =) and increase the raid performance ALOT
The mITX :
Well... it allready got 2 pata disks connected, and will be using 1 sata slot in dvd/rw , that pretty much fills it up with only 1 sata free, will see if ill put it to use at some point
Mini update :
got some decals cut on the label cutter today ^^.
Will get some pics tomorrow

The boy 4rm oz

The time had finally come, time to boot it all up !
And to my huge dissapointment... IT REFUSES TO BOOT WITH TWO LSI CONTROLLERS -.- god.... the frustration was overwhelming... waiting for reply from asus on this one...
Anyways... got some first temp readings up too, and it looks more then promissing, the temperature havent budged, even after a 24 hour idle with both systems on, still showing under 25c =) The water keeps a decent 18c too, and all the disks keep under 27c, same with the 15k rpm sas drives

I also said I would never fill a 220mb hdd! :D
all that i recall was looking at my dad when he bought a 20 gig hdd, laugh and say "do you realize how f#cking mental you would have to go in word to fill all that space!"
looks great non the less:)

I couldn't use that much space right now, but everything keeps increasing in size, so I wold eventually.
Saw this quote a few posts back...
Price estimation would be something like this =)
2 nicely specced gaming comps - 3000$ish
22 TB of drives is another 2800$
raid controllers close up to a decent 1800$ too...
4x 24" LCD's - 2000$
plexiglass cost around 100$ a square meter over here - 600$
Watercooling - 600$
Aluminium and other stuff 300$
I thought I was reading the next MasterCard commercial. That quote should have finished with, "Modding the ultimate kickass computer case, Priceless".
Great work you have done so far m8. Love everything about this build, especially the water setup. +rep

A mate of mine and I actually overloaded and killed a school computer plus caused the server damage by going mental in word lol. We copied and pasted "A" for something like 2million pages and then tried to save the word doc, the computer couldn't handle the size of the doc and neither could the server lol.
A water cooled Atom, now that is really cool, pardon the pun lol. Very nice work mate, fix up the cables a bit and you'r onto a winner ;).

I just got through reading the whole post and that is one awesome setup you have there. When I spent over $800 building my media server I thought it was kinda pricy. You have taken it to a whole new level, in $$ and capacity. One question, does the lights in the house dim when you fire that baby up???

That's not a RAM cooler, that's the actual RAM, it comes that way lol, the new version is much more user friendly.

wtf? the new version got awfully really tiny winy nozzles 0.o, EVEN SMALLER then the previous ones -.- how can the "new" modules be more user friendly? :P its double up of the really tiny winy nozzles aswell, wich is a effective double of possible leak possibilites 0.o
And thats without counting in the flow limitations it would give

The new model does use more hoses but they all plug into a single adapter meaning you don't have to shrink the rest of your loop to accomodate. You aren't ment to run it in a loop with a CPU or GPU anyway, it's designed for a secondary loop with NB, SB and mosfets in mind. The new blocks also cool better because you have coolant moving over the RAM chips rather than just the top heat collector.
Here is a good review on the OCZ Flex II:
