View Full Version : The Lair: My 2-room masterpiece

My parents are building a new house. We're about 2 weeks away from being ready to move in and do the decorating (we've bought it unpainted and without flooring), and i've had a bit of a look at what my lair is going to look like. That being said, I need new furniture. At the moment i have a 2mx2.5m bedroom, which fits a bunk bed and an office. I havn't gotten any new furniture since I was twelve, and as you can immagine I'm not quite bunk-bed-sized anymore.

The new house has my parents room, office etc on one end, and up the back of the house I have a bedroom + activity room (this room has two doors, one to my bedroom and one to the lounge).

My problem is, if i'm going to need new furniture, I want to give those two rooms my own personal feel to them...unfortunately, all the furniture I really like....is also really expensive. So I've decided to design it myself. I'm going to do a 3D mockup of my rooms, and then decorate them to decide what I'm going to do in the acutal room.

I'd like to make everything very tech-artisty. I do a lot of 3D work and a lot of digital art, so I want this reflected in my living space. I want a great deal of functionality and space saving, Especially the bed and computer desk.

My computer desk is very important because at the moment, I simply don't have enough room. I'm a gamer, but also an artist, so I need a way to switch between my keyboard/mouse and keyboard/tablet without having to reorganise my whole desk. Now, here's the challenge: I'm left handed. This means that I use a mouse with my right hand, because I learnt to as I couldn't be bothered swapping back and forth all the time, but i use the tablet with my left hand. I want the tower to be off the foor, and i want space for 2/3 LCD screens....not to mention my variety of USB hubs, cables, chargers and gadgets.

Anyone feel like designing me a desk I can build?

If anyone has any ideas/suggestions to help me with my techy rooms, or would like to design something, I'd love to see/hear it and will try to encorporate :D

If you see something cool online i could encorporate, post it!

Hmm.. I can try designing something, I can't guarantee it will be great, but I'd like to give it a shot.

On the desk you definitely need a small spot to put various electronics to charge and sync with your computer. So maybe a small cabinet/shelf thing with space for cables to be fed through.

Thanks guys!

I think this is really cool too, but I wonder if I could do it with working CDS...

I've got some desk designs that I'm workin on as well--just haven't had the time to post them here. This prefab junk I'm using is very restrictive. If I come across anything interesting, I'll be sure to post it.

as far as the light goes I would make the top removable and use it to house all my blank dvd's.as far as the desk goes go to hardware stores and such and see if you can get like a cheap counter top. We have some in the office here and I built my own desk out those and soem file cabinets. I will take a pic or two of them and post them up on here for ya. I am in the process of building my own desk as drum has pointed out the prefab crap is making me mad. cant find anything I like that ill do the job i need it too.

A desk is a very personal item, not sure exactly what you're looking for, but someone posted this on the Hot Deals thread a while back:

Anything like what you want?

hmmm, i had a few designs around, maybe i can find then or brain storm them up again. if you have some rough area dimensions that would give us the general area we'd be limited too.

Ok, Here's a floorplan of my two rooms up the back. The one on the right is the bedroom (as you can see it has a Walk in robe and an ensuite). The bathroom's allready done, so no need to consider that.

The little hemispheres are power points. All measurements are in mm :)

Desk Build (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11986)

This is a desk I built last Thanksgiving(US) break. Not really the artsy style I think you are looking for. But I did that in a matter of a few hours. Hopefully you can take some ideas from that, as it is all basic materials and very easy to build. Holds up to 6 full size ATX towers.

I used real cheap wood from Lowes/Home Depot. It was meant for like the supports in railings, not sure of the word for that. The desktop itself is marble tiles you would use for a marble countertop and the like.

Hope that can give you some motivations on supplies to use that don't break the bank, as it is done with flooring supplies and deck supplies lol. I'll try to think of some artistic designs for some furniture, as I've built quite a few desks/entertainment centers/closet designs.

That looks very nice! the tile idea is great too because we're tiling soon so i might be able to nab a few spares. the issues is that I think I will need a corner desk, due to needing to fit all my stuff in...
