So I tried to install Linspre OEM and an old drive. I was hoping that I could just drop the disk in and it would format the drive and install itself like XP/Vista, but it didn't. All I got was a black screen and:

GRUB>

Is this true for every type of Linux? Does Mandrake or Ubuntu install like XP/Vista? I want to start using some of these OS's to better understand them.

For the old Lindows, you needed an existing partition, that it would then overwrite. I don't know if they changed this for linspire. I have installed Debian and Ubuntu, and they let you choose what type of partition, and what size you want it.

Ubuntu installs just like XP. Works amazingly well. I got it and now never use XP apart from if i have to.

Ubuntu installs easier than XP (since there's a GUI). Pop the disc in, double click "Install", enter your information and let it do its thing. 15 minutes tops.

Cool I bought a new version online because it would take forever to download
