This company has started development on new 200 layer disk which will be the size of a normal dvd. On a normal dvd, there is one layer which holds about 5gb. Using new technology, the drive will be able to access all layers of the disk as if it was holding 200 5gb dvds in it! This means optical disks with 1TB, and thier even planning on making a 5TB one!

Just think of how much data you could wipe out with only a razor blade... or, for that matter, your bare hands!

Yeah, These would need to be in some sort of case. There are lots of problems with Bluray after getting slight smudges; these would be worse I assume.

That's amazing. I'm sure they'll be a bit pricey when they come out.

That looks kind of familiar...

Also did you realize that article is from August of 2007?

And Sony Blu-Ray has already won the format war. Reading the end, it say that one of them should be eliminated by the time they are selling those drives and media.

You may be right HOWEVER, remember, the disks are made up of 200 layers of 5gb. Scratching the surface would only destroy a couple layers of data. Also I'm sure anbody who would need to use these types of disks would be very carefull with them(The article says that currently the disks can only be written to once. Write once media is usually used for important stuff that you want to make sure you don't change or delete. EX: Police records, court testimony, and electronic voting.)

Pff. Enough with optical discs already, they are things of the past and should remain there. They scratch and break easy and because of that they end up being not very reliable. However, if you take excellent care of them, they'll last forever probably. I'd rather risk it with a thumb drive these days though.

How badly I wish DVD's and Music CD's would come in miniature thumb drives. Someday maybe eh?

I wonder what costs more to manufacture? Just going off of materials needed to create one or the other that is, as any other cost is subject to change over time. An optical disc or a miniature thumb drive?

And make them reusable... and send out AOL free trials on 'em...

What? I liked getting free floppy disks in the mail. Cassettes are cool for that, too.

Also: Optical discs are comparatively easy to manufacture - no casing, no soldering, no plug to add on, no LED, just a polycarbonate disc with a layer of foil and some ink.

I hate optical disks. The dumbest product design in the world. At least 8-track, cassettes, VHS tapes, etc. had a case. Engineers need to have more kids.

I wish I had a 5TB cd.
That would be sweet. But It sucks they can only be written to once :[

I personally would have no use for a 5TB CD, not enough crap to put on it, seems useless to me :?

I agree 100%. My child can mess up DVD's very quickly.

OK, I think the main function of these disks will be for corporate backup to start with. They would really only become useful when they start releasing super HD films, and so far, theres only one camera XD.

To solve the smudge problem, they should use the inner layers first, so if you damage the outside layers, you wont lose your data. The drivers for the drive should then be able to tell the OS that there is some damage, but it only affects the capacity, not the usage. It should still be fully accessible and useable.

This is like the zip disk to the floppy. Way larger capacity, but will probably never take off.

I'm not worried about scratches, I'm crazy when it comes to my CDs and DVDs being in their cases, I hate listening to a CD and then it starts skipping http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/motz2.gif

Optical will be dead in a few short years. Disposable memory paper where it's at. ;)

Just don't get them mixed!

But in all honesty, optical discs do have their place, they're great for backups (pity to back up a drive... I'd need a few 50 disc spindles) providing you store them correctly. Yes, they're slower, but they work, also they're fairly cheap.

What about when you are backing up terabytes worth of data. It would be nice to have it all on one physical medium, rather than spread across multiple disks. You would have to know which file was on which disk, unless you have clever backup software that tells you what disk to insert.

if you scratch the underside (mirror side) it can be buffed out and or lapped if you will. as long as you get it smooth again it will work fine. if you scratch the labal side it will be gone, its a very thin layer and not hard to kill.

this is good in theory but bad practically, the smallest bit of damage could wipe out no end of data, that's why our place still uses tapes as well as DVD backup
