View Full Version : A New Level of NERD

I'm a nerd, no doubt.

I think about computers all the time. In fact, while watching HGTV (the hostess ladies are HOT 90% of the time) with my wife, they'll be doing one of their usual walk throughs of a home. I always see a computer and say right away to my wife, "that's an HP" or "look at that old emachine!" She's always surprised how fast I can detect a computers' manufacturer and a little embarassed by what a dork I am.

Whenever I see a CRT I laugh. People spend tens of thousands to renovate their homes and never think to buy an LCD??

They should have a show about modding, where they walk through the person's home and get to the PC and go: "Wow, what an oldie......let's give it a face lift!"

You'd watch.

Same... though I don't laugh at CRTs, there's nothing really wrong with them if you have the space. I agree with you, though, that if someone has that kind of money, they can certainly afford a better monitor.

I do that too sometimes, but I'm with FP about the monitors.

I have to say I am also guilty as charged. NERD to the bone, my wife is learning to tolerate it.

Agreed on both counts.. Hot chicks on HGTV (http://blogs.denverpost.com/homegirls/wp-content/photos/Sandra_Rinomato_1.jpg), and I would definitely watch a modding show.

i cant stand it! im obsessed! when i come somewhere and sit down to a computer, the first thing i do is to sort out all the little things that just annoys me. fixes the res, cleaning the mouse ball (if the oldies have such a artifact), fix all sorts of small things:( its a nightmare! pc´s should be handled with respect:P and i could choke the fokes that rapidly presses several adds like "you just won a million and a new wife, click here to clame your prize" ...

last night i went to the movies... and cought myself trying to fast forward the boring parts:S
or when you do a small thing and think "ctrl-z" by yourself... ive had that a few times... im ashamed

There used to be a network called TechTV. There was not a specific show that was exclusive to case mods, but they would occasionally feature some on "the Screensavers."

My wife used to hate that network. All she likes to watch is HGTV and Food network.

That's the thing though. Most CRT's ARE better than LCD's in quality. At work we sell more CRT's than LCD's. 80% CRT's to 20% LCD's. Then again a lot of our CRT customers are high end design houses that need the better picture quality.

I do like the idea though TGS!

it would seem opposite to me, the CRT I use here @ work has crappy pic quality, while my LCD @ home is much better :?

CRT's always seems too bright for the eyes and get way too hot to be around.

They use more power, too.

I just turned my brightness down, because of that. Much better now. The black, even on my ancient CRT is unmatched by almost any LCD.

Screensavers was awesome back in the day I was 16 at the time when I first saw it back in 04. I have followed all the cast members since them on to there new indevaours. If Tekzilla and Systm where put together with the old gang it would be just as good as TSS. Check it out over at http://revision3.com/. Also I did the nerd test and my nerd status is pretty low.

I watched the entire painful process of the evolution of "the Screensavers" into "Attack of the Show." I'm glad that they changed the name because it just is not the same show anymore. I stopped watching G4 completely several years ago.

The whole channel is stoooopid. It's all about boring video games and Pron (at night). The only reason I'd watch (Muted) is because some off the gorgeous women on staff like Olivia Munn and Layla Kayleigh

Some folks have different priorities. Most folks have car and house higher on the list than they have their PC.

But you're right. It would be cool to have an "Overhaulin" for PC's or "Extreme PC Makeover" type shows on TV.

I have an old CRT that I tried to sell at a garage sale. I put a $4 sticker on it and no one would touch it. I'm thinking about spraying it with black vinyl dye and see if that would make it move at the next garage sale. Things are better in black you know...

Or you could try donating it, if you just want to get rid of it.

Then I wouldn't have the fun of spraying it a new color.

Actually, you're right. I probably will eventually have to donate the big boat anchor.

I have 2 LCD's and one CRT for PC testing purposes. The CRT weighs 49lbs!

I know that my nerd level is pretty high because I still morn the loss of my huge repository of computer stuff. My wife made me get rid most of that "junk." That may be one of the main reasons that I still have that old unused CRT monitor.

All that is left of my stuff is a couple pair of speakers, a handful of hard drives, CD drives, a floppy drive, combo serial/ps2 mouse, a bunch of case fans from broken power supplies, and a couple of old ATX cases.
