You've gotta give him credit - he promised he would turn them off if he got a single complaint, and kept to his word. Pretty honorable, considering how cool they were. I didn't realize he had actually synched the lights to three different songs - the Trans-Siberian Orchestra song in the video was only one of them.

oh yea absolutely, to spend $10K on that set up and turn it off with one complaint...is pretty amazing....i wonder if there are videos somewhere on the internet of the other songs :p

OMG. that is amazing, lol.

You know what would be cheaper than doing all that yourself? Buying a projector and a big white sheet. then hanging the sheet infront of your own house then playing that video. That way it looks like it is your house with all the lights. lol.

We all thought about the neighbours, but did we think about this guys kids (if he has any) trying to sleep with all these lights going on and off for about 6 hours. ouch, lol.

Except where are you going to put a AUD$3000 projector and a very large sheet, and what happens if some porn freak gets control of the projector and decides to project it using your stuff, wouldn't you get in trouble. Just a few things to think about!!

Actually the article says that he is an Electrical Engineer, so this doesnt necesarily mean that he just wrote a check for the system. DMX controllers and the associated parifinalia isnt cheap (or I would already have them :) ) so it can still be special..

crazybillybob
12-13-2005, 05:56 PM
From watching the video he just needed a PCL and a tape player. (no need fro DMX as there were no fades, just hard switches)

just my $0.02

Oh, and it's still special, Just not as Geeky as we all thought!

OvRiDe
12-13-2005, 07:46 PM
Not to be argumentative.. If you watch the Wizzards of Winter there aren't actual fades but there are levels of dim so I am not sure if DMX is required for that or not..

All I know is I REALLY want some DMX controllers but too cheap to pop for them.. :)

Now if someone (hint hint) knew a better and cheaper way .. I would really appreciate a tutorial..

EDIT: After rereading that it sounds like I'm coming off a bit smart a$$.. please believe me I didn't mean it that way..

i think that there were some fades in there though. in the blue lights on the house and that surround the yard. it's hard to tell though because the really crappy windows media codec that was used to compress the video for the internet would only shows us dramatic changes in color and luminosity, which turns nice smooth fades into jagged stepped levels. since he is an electrical engineer, maybe he did it himself and the $10K was bribes for city officials so he didn't have to get permits? :D lol just an idea lol :p

And don't forget, it is a 12 min show with Jingle Bells and another song.

Whether he bought the controllers and lights as a kit or not, he still have to think of the song, how he wanted to light it up, and what setup he was going to have. I doubt that he just made a phone call and they came and did everything. That would have cost 20 grand.

Well looks like he may have made his money back and some.. Miller Light is running his house on a comercial with the tag line.. "Enjoy the Lights" which I think was quite fitting..

adreamtraveler
12-26-2005, 04:13 AM
lol yea i just saw that the other day. it was cool to see at least a little bit of it non-compressed. i wonder how much miller paid him for it? maybe he did it for free?
