I'm going to need to shorten some of the cables on my PSU. Rather than remove all the pins from the plugs can I simply cut out the necessary length of wire and solder the ends together? I know these things are very picky about voltage and wasn't sure if the splice would cause any problems with resistance?

That shouldn't cause a problem, I'm pretty sure I've seen it done in mods before.

I used butt connectors to attach a SATA plug to a PSU from 2000. It's one of those small ones that you need to fit the small HP cases. It worked ok.

I've shortened the cables before without a problem. If you've got good solder connections, it shouldn't add appreciable resistance.

I've also learned its much easier to crimp new pins on instead of soldering each wire, heat shrinking and sleeving, provided you have a crimper. YMMV

Thanks for the tip, is there a specific name/type for the connectors inside the plugs on a PSU? I know there are at least 3 different shapes but no idea what to look for as far as the name is concerned?

I'm assuming you mean an ATX connector? Those are called ATX pins (http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g44/c155/s323/list/p1/DIYMod_Parts-Wire_Connectors_Pins-Connector_Pins-Page1.html).

I just order some from Frozen CPU but most mod shops have them. I see performancepcs has a wide range of tools including the tools to remove the pins as well as crimp the pins. This is the one that I bought which works pretty well.

The crimper that I have is one for RC cars so it's a little small. I may have to add this one to the tool collection.

Hmm, looks like performance has a pretty wide selection of all the pins

Very helpful, thanks!!! +rep

I bought a set of Sunbeam PSU modding tools before I thought about just cutting out the extra length, so all I need is a crimper I guess. Thanks again.
