Well this is my first mod. If anyoen thinks I am going about this the wrong way or have any suggestions on how to do this easier.... please let me know :) I basically have an idea of what I want. Here's a rough outline of what I'm trying to do...

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/2930/dsc01482ep1.jpg (http://img99.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01482ep1.jpg)

http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/3214/firstatomicbomb2un1.jpg (http://img236.imageshack.us/my.php?image=firstatomicbomb2un1.jpg)

The "goal" is to make a metal half of a bomb on the front of the case with a green glow around the bomb. There would be two keys on both sides that you gotta turn, then a covered rocker switch between the keys on the bomb itself (i didn't put the switch on the drawing yet) so to turn it on, you turn both keys, then flip the cover up on the middle switch, then hit the switch. When you flip the switch, I'd like to have a siren go off (like the one at the bigginning of the new Disturbed CD) The dvd drive would be stealthed. On the pic you can see a head in the middle of the bomb that was erased. Was thinking about taking a doll head (yea I'm wierd ;) ) and burn it severely, and cut off the back and put it in the middle part of the bomb where the erased head is. As far as everything else goes, I'm not sure on the colors or the sides or anything yet. I just bought a Antec twelve hundred case, but I have a case from my old comp that i might try this on first. (also gotta see how much of the antec case I can take apart.

I stripped down the old case and was left w/ a pile of fans, screws, wires, and a ball o' dust. Here's what is left...

http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/8458/dsc01471ti9.jpg (http://img255.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01471ti9.jpg)

I went to Menards and picked up some galvanized pipe to make the middle part of the bomb, some screws, some L bracket thingies. I also bought a rain cap for the top of it, but I ended up not liking what it looked like (comes to a point) so I'm gonna take that back.

I was unsure on how to make the top of the bomb, you guys gave me a bunch of ideas, but with my lack of money, I'm either gonna find a steel bowl and cut the flared ends off, or cut metal strips out of that galvanized metal I have, and kind of criss cross them to make a dome. I tested out the strip idea, and that would work, just gotta recut them so they won't overlap much. Here's a sorry excuse for a cardboard model :)

http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/5044/dsc01486bx7.jpg (http://img392.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01486bx7.jpg)

Well I cut the main part of the bomb out, I cut it a little long just to be safe. I taped it along the front just to make sure I have all the dimensions right. Here are 2 pics, and one w/ my chihuahua in it :)

http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/7420/dsc01490wq6.jpg (http://img392.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01490wq6.jpg)

http://img392.imageshack.us/img392/3065/dsc01491kh3.jpg (http://img392.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01491kh3.jpg)

I'm not sure If i want it out that far tho, I gotta somehow put the dvd drive in there so it will pop out far enough to put a disk in it. On the last 2 pics, I have a line of tape where the dvd drive would be.

Thats all for tonight. Any ideas are always welcome!

Well, I ended up headin out to Wal-Mart and found this stainless bowl that had the perfect look to it. Had to cut off the lip thingy and wow, I realize now why you gotta take light strokes when cutting rather than just cutting right through it. Went through a few cutting disks :)

http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/6575/dsc01493nc9.jpg (http://img528.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01493nc9.jpg)

So here is what it would look like with the top on it.

http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/2950/dsc01496du7.jpg (http://img520.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc01496du7.jpg)

Now I gotta figure out how I'm gonna make the bottom. I gotta go from 8 inch diameter to a 3 inch diameter somehow. Went to Lowe's and found reducers going from 8 to 5 but not lower than that. I'm trying to make a cone type thing with the metal I have left over from the main part. I'm afraid its going to look real sloppy if I do it like that. Anyone have any ideas?

Grab the 8 to 5 reducer, then make a cone from 5 to 3. That'll probably be the smoothest look for easy/cheap/quick.

Ok, call me a pessimist. I had my doubts about this whole thing, but that last pic really shows the potential here. I stand corrected, carry on with some rep!

Looking good so far! How bout using a funnel at the bottom, then center a 3" pipe to the bottom of the funnel?
http://contraptionmaker.info/images/funnelpipe.jpg
Then just attach the fins to the 3" pipe...

Just a thought!

Well its been awhile since I updated this. I'm going in a different direction with this case. Bomb is going on top rather than the front. I have some pretty good ideas now, although I may keep some of it a secret :) But with my lack of knowledge with this stuff, it probobly won't be a secret for long. :lick: . Anyways, I should have some pics up soon. :)

Alrite, here are some pics of what I got so far, still thinking of ways to get whats in my mind, to paper, and from paper to my case. I'm kind of a perfectionist so I can never make up my mind. blah, anyway, here are a few pics of what I got so far.

the JB weld didn't hold as well as I'd hoped. Now I gotta attach the pieces of the bomb together somehow and start thinking about what materials I'm gonna use to get my idea on the front to work. Maybe i'll draw out a new design to show you guys... Till next time!

When using Jb weld for things like this you need to do a few things that they don't put on the package.
1) make sure the two pieces over lap well (if the don't no big deal just put a piece of "scrap" metal behind the joint.
2) scuff the area to which your applying the JB weld (100-200 grit sand paper does a good job)
3) clean the area with acetone (or fingernail polish remover), then clean it with denatured alcohol (rubbing alcohol will work too).
4) make sure it's dry (and don't touch the area with your finger...you'll put the oil you just cleaned off back on)
5) mix and apply JB weld per directions...
6) added extra JB weld

Also any place that you can hide a physical connection (rivet, screw, bolt, etc) use it, this will cut down the stresses place on the JB weld joint.
Take a look at this pic of Little Boy (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/mongsoft/images/little%2520boy2a.jpg&imgrefurl=http://studysupport.info/vulcanbomber/howtheywork.htm&usg=__VjVTnfWoRt_gZGDQ12Z92zA1T2U=&h=728&w=1126&sz=139&hl=en&start=3&tbnid=hbZgv26QGT6TpM:&tbnh=97&tbnw=150&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dlittle%2Bboy%2Bnuke%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3D en%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26sa%3DG) notice that the parts of the bomb are held together with bolts that you can see from the out side. Your bomb doesn't have to be completely smooth, unless you want it to be.

Your other options are Soldering the parts together, or brazing them together. (dissimilar metals don't weld).

You also need to pick up some Fiber glass reinforced cutoff wheels for your dremel, they work so much better then those red "heavy duty" ones, Break less too!

I like the design, and The Bowl nose cone worked out well! (once you start modding everything starts looking like a mod part :) )

Don't get discouraged if you run into a snag (like the JB weld or your earlier DVD drive conundrum)... Just work through and you do Fine.
Also Remember you building this for you, no one else has to like it just you, that's al that matters!

Welcome to TBCS, Your off to a great Start !!!

Thanks :) yea I sanded the metals but didnt' clean it w/ acetone or anything, and i probobly touched it alot hehe. The reason for the jb weld was that I was gonna weld lil 1inch by 2 inch tabs on the inside of the bowl, so I could have a place to screw a bolt in to hold together the bowl and the middle part. I got some carriage bolts? i think there called that would look good for the outside. Now the tabs are falling off heh. might have to just rivit them together then bondo over it to smooth it out. who knows, I'm sure i'll come up with a crazy outrageous plan that involves so much time, when it could have easily been solved in 5 minutes hehe. thats how i roll!

Xcartguy

btw, thanks for the pic of the little boy :) For some reason I was thinking it was gonna be a big statue of a boy holding a donut... but that pic gives me something to shoot for. Might actually put the fin thing how it is in that pic, rather than just 4 fins coming off of it like a missle.
