Why the hell would anyone need this (http://cgi.ebay.com/Lot-5pcs-Compact-Flash-CF-to-ATA-IDE-adapter-converter_W0QQitemZ280281865271QQcmdZViewItemQQptZ PCA_Cables_Adapters?hash=item280281865271&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318)?

Can you use a CF as a Hard drive?

Sure you can. It's not a good idea to have any sort of swap file on it, though, as that will quickly kill the drive.

It's a popular option in SFF computers, particularly machines repurposed as routers, print servers, firewalls, etc... anything that needs to be small and quiet and won't frequently access the hard drive.

CompactFlash is electrically compatible with IDE, by the way. Just a different connector.

Well they do have actual HDD CF cards that you can put swap files on. you can run XP from a harddrive around 1.8 inches. it's amazing.

I've been thinking of getting some of those for older computers.

I'm looking at one and a 4-8GB for my Debian server.

We have used these quite a bit in the embedded computers that are going to be mounted to a vehicle.
