The Firefox of Media Players? (http://getsongbird.com/)

I've never heard of Songbird before, but if its by Mozilla, I'm definitely interested!

If its made by Mozilla or Google, you can always count me in! :p

As far as I know Songbird has always been a Mozilla project. It is just as customizable as Firefox and the addon base is growing as it gets picked up. When you first install it, it looks a lot like iTunes so you will immediately be familiar with the UI. After that you can do just about anything you want with it, and it'll still play your music. It is also compatible with an iPod, and just about any other MP3 player you can think of (and if it isn't, I'm sure someone will write your favorite player into it).

iTunes works just fine for me though, I have no reason to switch.

I'll give this a version or two, but if it's got a minimal-window feature, it might well be replacing Winamp. Way cool!

Looks very cool, much like iTunes. If it supports the AAC files I will be very keen on giving it a shot. I don't have an iPod any more, just used the software out of convenience. Now that iTunes won't let me update or uninstall it's worth a change lol.

I liked the overall interface, but the skin was a bit out-dated looking, like it belonged in Mac OS 9. Sound was good, and the colors worked. It found my library without fail.

I am using it now, works really well I think. The software that detects song names could be a bit better. Some of my songs from iTunes are missing their artists and albums but that's ok it was only a single artist that this happened to.

I downloaded a few skins (feathers as they like to call it). I am using "Gonzo Complete Black", goes perfectly with the standard Vista tool bar and my black firefox.

I've tried it a few times, various releases, windows and linux.
Not once has it worked properly so I dismissed it as a stinky pile of poo.

OTOH, I might just give it another try, see if it works yet.

Edit. Well the linux version doesn't. Scan media, load everything up, select a track, doesn't play it.

So, it's still a stinky pile of poo.

I'm trying again, since I discovered that only one application could play MP3's just now. Other's just wouldn't work (and they used to.) I rebooted and I can now play them with those other apps, so maybe the bird was using some library or something which had got itself in a mess. I dunno, it's all magic to me anyway.

I wouldn't worry about that. I have about half that but it took about 7 minutes to index them. http://bestsmileys.com/clocks/8.gif

Hmm, the bird seems to be singing correctly this time.

It worked fine for me on vista too. If I get an ipod, I will probably be using it instead of itunes, but, for now, I will just stick with windows media player.

I used to use it until a month or two ago. It worked fine for a while until it suddenly stopped syncing with my ipod, and it was forever freezing randomly, and at that stage you couldn't edit the metadata of any of the songs, and also had some problems adding new songs to the library, and some songs would randomly disappear. But they might have fixed that by now... I'll probably try it out again sometime soon, because I was pretty impressed for the first few months I was using it.

I just downloaded it and I like it. I need to get a skin for it, but it seems like a good replacement for i-tunes.

That was before I installed the correct video card driver. Now it's borked again.

Ho hum, maybe one day they will eventually get version that's actually usable.

I've used it since their first alpha release (.1 or something like that). Have not used it recently (I use foobar2k for general music listening). It used to be quite buggy and bloated (heck, their dev blog used to make fun of it for these problems (that's where the farting bird graphic came from (yes that little cloud is a "fart"))). I believe that it has gotten much better, especially the 1.0 release candidates that are out there now.

Also, guys it is NOT a Mozilla project, the group developing it calls them selves "Pioneers of the Inevitable". Yes it uses XULrunner (more or less FireFox), so it is based off of FireFox. It uses (or at least did in the past) some VLC code in Windows for all the A/V stuff (I believe it uses gstreamer in linux, or at least did).

It is powered by Mozilla, they allowed the use of their codes. Therefore in my eyes it is still part Mozilla and the rest awesome lol. You can customize it like Firefox and even use it as a web browser, that's what I like.
