This is mind-boggling, although Hyperthreading on a quad-core is slightly rediculous...

Hyper threading on a quad core isn't ridiculous now. I could load that thing 100%.

That's all I want for X-mas.

Those actually aren't priced all that badly, the $310 is a pretty good deal. Too bad you have to spend $300 on the memory and another $300 on the motherboard just to get it to work. But still, a grand isn't that bad if your in the market for a new computer or a complete upgrade.

it's only $30 more than the core 2 quad running at the same speed. Newegg has a lot of DDR3 memory available now for under $100.

but triple channel memory is 300.
also the only thing, so far, the i7's are good for is rendering and encoding things or doing anything cpu intensive. its still best to stick with 775 stuff for new builds meant for everyday use and gaming.
EDIT: also for us overclockers its going to be alot hard unless you get the $1000 extreme version.

What is QPI?

It's not terrible.
but triple channel memory is 300.
Here's some decent stuff for under $300 (3GB) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227369)

Yeah, I'm helping eslfish do a build with a Q6600. With 4GB ram, Asus p45q Pro, 500GB WD HDD, 550W cooler master PSU, and 8800GT (the last two supplied by me for a little less) right now, he is going to be spending $460. It could be less than that depending on what the black friday sales are.

I thought it was just overvoltaging the memory that was a problem.

well before the chips came out, toms hardware was saying that they had a blocker in the chip so it a certain amount of watts are used it won't oc anymore. just trying to find the article right now it seems as though motherboards can override that problem.
as for your friends build i would scrap that junk cool mater psu and go with this, Corsair 550VX (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139004)

Well, MSI's new Core i7 mobo supports triple channel, with up to 24GB of DDR3 RAM!!
Also supports both SLI and Crossfire with 2x PCI-E x16 expansion bays and a PCI-E x4 bay thrown in too. The northbridge is a lot cooler than the core2duo and core2quad extreme based chipsets, so along with being very fast stock, looks like there can be some serious overclocking going on here.
Wouldent be suprised if someone manages to get 5GHz out of one :D Although you would need some pretty good RAM for that, and 2x ATI HD4870 x2 to keep up the graphical side.

Other than that and the 8800, it is. He can't really afford to spend any more money on it.

Providing you know what you're doing, overclocking an i7 isn't too hard.
btw, QPI is a replacement for FSB.

Mind you... you probably wont need to overclock these very much anyway, as they are suposedly very quick anyhow.
If there is a limitation built in to the chips, I cant see why Intel did it. Unless it's hiding/fixing a fault/bug.

"Junk" depends on the specific model of Cooler Master it is. If it's a Seventeam-built unit, it's probably only around a 500w model, at most, but it's of good quality. If it's a Hipro, or (as seems likely) an AcBel, it's also likely to be perfectly adequate.
Besides, used for $30 is a solid deal anyway. If it doesn't work for this build it'll be fine for another.

The limit can be disabled I believe.
