Can I CrossFire two different cards that both have CrossFire? Like the 3850 and the 3870?

Yeah, but currently they have to be the same generation and series.
i.e. 3850 and 3870, or 4850 and 4870, or 4650 and 4670, etc.

Hope that helps,
Indybird

Yes you can, In fact that is the major advantage of crossfire over SLI, but don't forget, you can only use ONE MONITOR if you crossfire or SLI (just mentioning this for people who don't do their homework and get very upset when they can no longer use both their monitors).

Good luck Satan :D

Actually Crossfire and SLI can both do multi-monitor now. Crossfire has been able to do it for a while and SLI just got it in the 180.xx drivers...

I guess so that u can take advantage of all of that graphics horsepower and play across multiple screens.

But wouldnt it just be easier to have 1 card per screen? I guess if card1 < card2 and you want to even them up i'd understand...but if they're equal you might aswell just use 2 un crossfire'd cards?

you can they have to be in the same serioes for examble im runing 4870 and 4850 its the same as if i was runing 2 4850 so preforamance wise stick with the same card I have doen 2 4850 and then bought a 4870 for another computer so i stuck it in my main one to see if there was a diffrence and there was nothing same as if you run 2 of the lower card

But if you're using one graphics-intensive program or game, that's the only way that it can really utilize the combined power of both cards.

Is it still the case today, that cards have to be from the same series? I`ve got an 3870 and am buying a new 5770 and was wondering if i could crossfire them...

AFAIK, the only way to crossfire cards from different generations will be with the Hydra setup, which isnt even officially released yet.

Hydra looks so cool.. you can even "sli-fire" an Nvidia card and an ATI card together!

been thinking about it and i`ll probably be stuck in dx 9 anyway (because of the 3870) - still a cool thought though..

your 3870 is rated for dx10.1, not dx9, so you're all set

Nope. Can't do cross-series/family/generation (whatever its called)
However, you can do a 5750 w/ a 5770 as far as I have found

basically.. to crossfire cards.. without the new hydra system... the first 2 digits must be the same. 38xx works with any other 38xx same with 4850 workin with 4870 and 57xx

you can mix MSI with ATI with ASUS with any other brand... aslong as the first 2 digits r the same :)
