hey guys this will be my third case on the go... it is because i have pieces of moditor scattered between two houses and i am still trying to get them all..
so here goes... project vento:devious:
as the name kind of states.... it will be extremely vented..
my base case is one my uncle bought me from an auction for $2!!!!
no pics... sorry
well first thing i did was drew up some pics for the front bezel idea.
this was on the 20th november
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030986.jpg
probably cant see that pic very well..
the next thing i did was strip the case of its parts... top, sides, bezel, fans, feet and other stuff
then i took a trip to the shops..
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030998.jpg
also got about 1.5m of railing stuff.. for the feet....
here is is cut into 4 strips.
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030962.jpg
then i taped of the side pannel... right one... left one is at dads for some reason.
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030987.jpg
drew out a design on the side pannels. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030991.jpg
let me clear this up cuz some people dont get it
the side pannel will have the three holes cut out. then there will be about 2cm raiser then an alumi plate the same shape as the hole just an inch bigger.
this will be clear when i do it.
also marked out the top vent
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1040001.jpg
then with my not so famous hammer and screwdriver technique i cut them both out
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1040008.jpg
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1040012.jpg
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1040014.jpg
that is all for now... im a bit lost so ill do another post in a bit
total view of the case so far - feet

i did a mock up of the front of the feet.. ie.. side feet on with the cd rom i won in the art contest.
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1040018.jpg
-face pannel :)
i cut some brackets for the feet to join to... probably glue..
they still need a little bit of sanding but they are not done :)
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030978-1.jpg
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030992.jpg
fit like so
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030994.jpg
then i cut 2 brackets for the cd rom to screw into
not drilled yet..
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030995.jpg
this is what the front will look like just with a cut out for the cd rom part
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030965.jpg
the cd rom fits really snug
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030982.jpg
i then marked out all 4 pieces of the feet ready for cutting
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1030996.jpg
then today at school i cut 2 of the 4 pieces.
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1040015.jpg
then did a mock up to see how they fitted
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1040016.jpg
http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1040017.jpg
that is all... hoping to get the second side pannel done this weekend but may not.
enjoy

http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj176/dont-fear/P1040034.jpg
and also filed down a few brackets..

Have to say, do like the rails/feet that you made. Just looking at it though, your cooler facing you GFX like that doesnt seem to give much scope for the hot air getting out, or am i missing something?
Love the fans in the bottom as well. looks sweet :D
DonT-FeaR

all the fans are intake and the air will be forced out through the vents..... i hope..

When I was helping DF pick a CPU cooler I ran into the problem that most AMD users have. The coolers can generally only be mounted so the fan blows towards the GPU or the PSU. This due to the how the build on mobo fan bracket is orientated.
It would work much better if the CPU cooler was turned 90 degrees so that the fan was pushing hot air into the 120mm exhaust of the PSU.

DELMAR!!!! the cut out in the front of the case is about 380mm and i was planning on having 3 120mm fans... therefore 3x120=360 380-360=20 no problem!
BUT
the hdds are at the bottom... and i think... if i push the hdds away from the front as much as i can i may get 30mm MAYBE if im lucky
fans are 25mm thick... so 30-25=5mm
this enought room to cool efficantly.?
The boy 4rm oz
03-03-2009, 06:43 AM
Fans have a dead spot where no or very little air is moved (the centre) so you want to have a slight distance between the fan and the item it cools. However with HDDs (as they produce very low amounts of heat) it wont make a difference.

most people want bad news first so here goes.... my angle grinder and my dads drill took thier own lives this long weekend... they both started smoking.... lol the drill had a 120mm holesaw in it and couldnt hack it and the grinder was just 10 bucks so wasnt the best built...
the good news.... got a (enter 4 letter word of choice here) load done this weekend.
ok... so
i made some strengthening brackets after i saw the sway the case gave when pushed...

How big are the panels? And how much of an inset is there from the edge of the standoffs to the edge of the panels?
edit: nvm, I can get all that from the measurements you posted, except for the size of the top panel, I think.

next for the HDD holder I did a cross section line from corner to corner to find the centre of each panel and them got my hole saw set out and drilled a 87mm hole on either side.

http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040839.jpg
Once I did a mock up of this in my case I decided to make it taller so that the graphics card power wire could go under the holder if need be (although I am going to change my system) and also to get the hdds out of the fans dead spot.
Here is the holder with the hdds in action.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040822.jpg

With
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/hddholderbrackets-1.png
And here is the extension bracket after fabrication and priming the hole that has been cut is not perfect but it will not be seen and it is for cables and they will occupy most of the area.

hdd holder:
The next step to install the extensions to the holder was to mark and drill some mounting holes this was repeated on both sides.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040870.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040873.jpg
Once I had done this I realised that the pop rivets wouldn’t have enough metal to grab on to the extensions, to save me a trip to the store and some money I grabbed some scrap and made a few of these washers.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040875.jpg
Once these where done I popped it all together. Heres a few different angle pictures.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040876.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040877.jpg

http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040879.jpg
I also drilled the mounting holes for the actual hard drives. This mounting system still needs refining and I know how to fix this problem I only ran out of time to complete it.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040869.jpg
Heres a near complete mock up of the hard drive holder.

http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040963.jpg
And here is where the cables run through.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040965.jpg
engraving pannels:
After I got the design and the panels back from the company I instantly started taking pictures. These panels are perfect to what I wanted to get for Vento.

Front panel,
I lost some of the pictures for the front panel of Vento here is it basically cut and bolted to the front of the case.. This is no where near sanded to size or refined yet.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040446.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040445.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040447.jpg
I then un bolted it from the case and marked out, and drilled some 120mm holes for the fans I shall have at the front of the case.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040448.jpg
The next step for the front was to mark out and drill the mounting holes to mount the 3 fans. With no layout or template I roughly marked out the holes and drilled them. The bolts I will be using are these ones.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040897.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040893.jpg

Sucks about the thumb buddy, the worst I have done is dislocated my right ring finger, wasn't actually that bad cos all my knuckles are double jointed anyway, just clicked right back in.
Yeah don't steal my curved Lexa front lol, the flat front goes very well with your side panel design, the curve would be out of place.

The next step was to cut out the side panels and get them into the correct shape.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040419.jpg
One done… a few more to go..
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040443.jpg
Once the panels where cut out I took this picture.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040931.jpg
Shows all of the panels together.
I sanded one of the corner panels to make sure it was correct then chucked it onto the raisers to check.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040426.jpg
Then to get all the corners the right size I clamped the first complete one to another and vice griped.. then went to the bench sander and unleashed!
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050008.jpg
Rinse and repeat and you get.

Then buffed one up for a teaser.. although they will be painted (bad buffing by the way)

WIRES
24 pin extender. Is the first contender.
First I cut the wires at about 2cm from one end and striped them
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040908.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040910.jpg
I then soldered 20cm of extra wire to the ends to make it longer.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040904.jpg
To stop heaps of confusion I did the top layer black and the bottom layer white so I could at least tell which was which
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040903.jpg
I then added some 4mm thick black tubing to the mix
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040906.jpg
Hey presto!
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040902.jpg
Rough look at it for a mock up..
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040902.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040900.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040899.jpg
Then once the tubing was on I soldered and heat shrinked all the wires
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040913.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050044.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050042.jpg
And done it looks like so.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050037.jpg
So it will keep the shape I wanted I got some stainless steel and bent it to the desired shape. Taped it up. And then taped it to the tubing.. it sits inside like so,
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050041.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050040.jpg
And all done looks like this
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050038.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050046.jpg

Once I re did this it looked like so,
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050093.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050094.jpg

http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050098.jpg
Base.
The base on Vento will house the CDROM and 2 120mm fans, I am unsure of what metal this is but It is stronger than aluminium to cut but as soft to bend. I believe it is intended to be used on fly screen doors. I spotted this out the back of a friends place and knew it was perfect for the base. He then gave me the metal. To start this base I Snapped the metal into rough lengths of what I need for the base, like so.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1030962-1.jpg
Here is the base lengths compared to the case.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1030963-1.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1030964-1.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1030965-1.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1030984-1.jpg
Here are the lengths marked ready to be cut to size.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1030996-1.jpg
Here are the panels after I cut them on the bandsaw at school.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040015-1.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040034-1.jpg
Here are the corner brackets before being cut these will hold the 4 sides of the base together.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1030978-1.jpg
Here they are after being cut to size
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040036-1.jpg
The brackets will fit into the C channel base like so.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1030994-1.jpg
For this base to work I needed to see if my CDROM will fit in the c channel. Here is the CD ROM
minus the face plate.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1030981-1.jpg
Here is the CDROM fitting into the C channel. It is a perfect fit and squeezes in for a tight fit.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1030982-1.jpg
This is the layout for the bottom panel of Vento. It will provide air to cool the graphics card, like so.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040219-1.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040220-1.jpg
CD ROM on left which is the front.
The next step was to mark out the fan holes and cut them out.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040218-1.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040230-1.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040238-1.jpg
so after knowing that the fans and CDROM will fit into the base with ease i decided to mock up the base and see what kind of outcome i will get.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040221-1.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040222-1.jpg
that was looking as planed so i decided to mark and cut out the CDROM faceplate so that the tray has somewhere to slide to :)
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040225-1.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040234-1.jpg
(this will be covered up later it is just to show where the tray will go through the base.)
the next step was to make the CDROM stay in the base when connected. so i quickly cut up two of these. Drilled and mounted them to.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050068.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050067.jpg

http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050073.jpg
Re wired the cdrom button so I can wire it to a switch later.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050074.jpg
Once the front was cut out. I drilled these 4 holes for leds. Also wired up leds and test fit.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040933.jpg
Then marked out and cut out the vents for the sides.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040281-1.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040282-1.jpg

What it will look like with the mech behind
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040325.jpg
Then drilled the holes for it to be mounted to the case.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040299.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040298.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1040297.jpg
Then finished filing the vents
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050077.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050084.jpg

http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050091.jpg
Then to hold it all together I jammed it full of putty … dies as hard as a rock and sticks like glue.
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050081.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050082.jpg
http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050083.jpg

A tip, get some counter sunk screws, ditch the washers and counter sink yourself some holes for those corner brackets. It will make it less noticeable and make it sit a lot more flush when attached to the case.
It is looking really good though mate, can't wait to see it done.

Looks good though mate. Personally I would use smaller spacing blocks but it looks good all the same. What colour were you going to paint it again? I think it looks awesome with the black chassis and polished pieces, I would paint the chassis gloss black and polish that alu to a mirror finish, that would look hot, add some white CCFLs and you got it made lol.

side panels
Sanded these panels to give a flat scuffed surface so the paint sticks a bit better.. it is actually quite smooth.

http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/uu9/Jwatt_2nd/P1050098.jpg
The next step was to drill the holes in these panels to make them mountable for the side.
To get them all the same I marked and centre punched one. Then used vice grips to hold them all perfectly in line.
The cloth is there to stop the vice grips ruining the finish on the metal.
Pilot holes.

Damn that's a lot of parts, it's all coming together very well, I can't wait to see it painted. I must say though that I really don't like those panel spacers you are using, they kinda look like an afterthought to me, just my 2 cents.

Ok, this thing has officially taken off. Wow.
The new fan panel, seems to me the difference is the spacing? The first had more space between the bottom fan and the edge than between the top fan and the edge. The new one looks perfectly centered. (Please tell me I got that one. :))
I for one love the spacers you're using, will they be painted to match the panels or a contrasting color?
I'd be worried about the noise level with the three fans being that close to the flat plate, drawing air in around the edges, have you bench tested it assembled yet?
Regardless, great work! +rep
