I was watching a BluRay movie played in a BluRay player on a BluRay 1080p TV and it looks the same as my crappy 29" Admiral TV from 1996. Do you see a difference?

What kind of connection are you using with the 1080P TV? Is there a signal type selection on the player?

I watch Blu-rays on my PS3 w/HDMI cable and regular movies both on the same TV and I notice a difference. Colours are a lot more vibrant and you can notice a lot more detail especially in the background (trees, skyline, etc). Sound is a definate improvement too, however if you are watching blu-rays of old movies (none come to mind but movies from the 80s they put on blu-ray) then I find they are damn near the same. I've watched 2 movies side by side and I notice a huge difference.

The downside is stuff looks a lot more fake or you notice the fake stuff more. One example is when they do the green screen stuff and they put in a background you can see a huge difference between the two shots. Also if the make up isn't done the greatest you can see where a fake nose is and stuff like that.

I can see a small difference between upscaled dvd's and blu-ray.

there is a huge difference... if you just starting out buying movies and what not (i.e. moving into your own place and what not) it makes sense to go blu ray. but if you have a huge dvd collection there is no point in changing it all to blu ray.

the blu ray picture is much sharper and more vibrant than dvd.

alot of people are getting up converting dvd players since its cheaper than bluray. i am looking into a Samsung one but heard its menu is slow to respond. but i would prefer Samsung since it will work with my Samsung tv.

If you guys want Blue-ray, I would wait for a few months because the prices of the players will go way down in price in a few months. They can't stay at $300+ forever.

What movie was it? Was it a remastered old movie or a brand new movie?

It's that movie "Planet Earth" that was actually shot in High Def when they made it. And I'm using Gold HDMI cables.

aren't some blu-ray players at $200 or less? I just use my ps3.

PS3s are really good Blu-Ray players and very good DVD upconverters. If you plug a normal, non-upconverting DVD player up to the same TV, you will see a difference. Also, old movies aren't that great on Blu-Ray yet. So far they are just pooping out the same stuff on a new disk. I really almost thing that they are just upconverting bad images to HD and then sticking them on Blu-Ray disks. Remastered versions will look better; new movies will look incredible in comparison. Again, you need to watch a non upconverting DVD player on the same TV to see what the big deal is.

It is why I'm waiting for HVD's to become the standard, which won't be long, I'm guessing.

Gaming would be ridiculous. Like never ending open worlds.

If you were expecting a mind-blowing experience, then maybe that is why you are unimpressed? The difference is definitely noticeable, but its not insane or anything. In my opinion, its not one of those things where you go "wow, I must have one!", its more like "dang, thats pretty nice, but I'm happy with my current HDTV, maybe I'll upgrade someday if I feel like it". That may just be me though, everyone responds to things differently. Take audiophiles for example, they'll swear by the difference of a good pair of headphones and an excellent pair of headphones. To me, I can't seem to really notice much or any difference at all.

As for not being able to tell the difference between a TV from 1996 and a fully-equipped Blu-ray setup, then that must be one bitchin' old TV or you're just not able to tell the difference for whatever reason (poor eyesight maybe?). Personally, I noticed a great deal of difference when I upgraded from my 2003 Dell LCD monitor to my new Asus PG221H (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236042), which doesn't really have a whole lot of boasting room aside from physical aesthetics. Its sort of your in-between monitor, not the best of the best but certainly better than stock.

If you compare regular HD with Blu-ray, I would say only a few people out of a large group of people would notice any real difference to go "yea, I'd pay the extra for that.".

How big was the 1080p tv?

There is definitely a difference, but one thing to think about is that with these large televisions with higher resolutions, in the end, the resolution density is similar to that of an old 480i/p on a smaller television. Yes you are looking at more pixels on the bigger tv, but they are bunched up similar to as much as the older tv with lower resolution.

To really notice a difference in the resolution, and the capabilities of 1080 and blu-ray, take an older 32/42/52" tv and compare it to a 1080 tv of the same size running blu-ray.

TGS: On most dvd/bluray players, you need to set the output to 1080p manually in the player setup. It is possible that the output was only 480p, which is very close to the old 480i standard. I have the Planet Earth set on DVD, and watch it on my upsampling dvd player (to 720p) and the quality DESTROYS the regular tv playback.

I'll wait for a blu-ray/av receiver.
