Ok, so I scored a free Compaq computer with a (suspected) bad mobo, and decided to have a little fun with it. I love Monster Energy drinks, and I have a Monster Energy Kawasaki sweatshirt, and I ride a Kawasaki (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?p=214043#post214043) as well, so I decided to go in this direction as I have not seen something like this before.
I dont know what I'm planning on doing with this once its done, I dont have the HDW to make it a running computer, maybe hang onto it for a while or possibly sell it, we'll see.
this is what I started with:
http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/normal_Picture%20001~0.jpg (http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/Picture%20001~0.jpg)
http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/normal_Picture%20002~0.jpg (http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/Picture%20002~0.jpg)
I'm planning a side window, in leftover translucent green plexi from project Rockin Case (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15292), and maybe a top one as well. The silver parts will get bondo'd to get rid of the compaq logo and to smooth them out. The front of the case I've yet to determine what I'm gong to do with it. I'm stealing the PSU and card reader from this comp for Rockin Case, so I'm trying to think of something else to do with the front of this.
panel to mod, the vents on teh bottom I'll cover with green plexi as well, and probably install a UV cathode or 2 to light her up:
http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/normal_Picture%20003~0.jpg (http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/Picture%20003~0.jpg)
I started with this logo
http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/normal_Monster_Logo.jpg (http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/Monster_Logo.jpg)
and got rid of the black background, then cot off the bottom text, and reorientated it so its vertical, but the letters are still horizontal...you'll see what I mean :D
I printed the 2 logos out, and then proceeded to spend a couple hours with a cutting board and razor knife to cut out the letters and logo to create stencils.
http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/normal_Picture%20004.jpg (http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/Picture%20004.jpg)
http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/normal_Picture%20006~0.jpg (http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/Picture%20006~0.jpg)
you can see here I cut the grey outline out and left it intact (this is what took so much time). My plan with this is as follows. I'm going to cut out the letter, then cut out or file down the piece I cut out so it looks like the white leftover you see in the pic, then I will glue it to the plexi, so when it's lit up all that will glow will be the green outline (grey outline in paper form shown here). Thats my plan anyways, we'll see how it turns out. I've also saved all the inners from the O, D and R to trim and install afterwards
http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/normal_Picture%20007~1.jpg (http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/Picture%20007~1.jpg)
here it is all marked, ready for cut. I was planning on doing this with my dremel, but with the amount of intricate cuts I'm having 2nd thoughts. I'm in talks with a local waterjet company, so we'll see what happens :D
http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/normal_Picture%20009.jpg (http://www.postwhore.biz/albums/userpics/10082/Picture%20009.jpg)
thats it for now, until I get some free time between this and 2 jobs and Rockin Case.

If you want a P3 motherboard/CPU, I can send them your way. I have some small RAM that I can give you, too. I can't see your pics, because I'm at school, so no comment on the mod as of yet.

thanks for the offer, I've got a p3 500 mobo with stuff, but its too big to fit in this case. the mobo that came out is 9" x 9.5", my P3 mobo is 12" x 7.5", too long
SXRguyinMA
12-08-2008, 12:44 PM
the P3 mobo is on the left, the Celeron D mobo that came out is on the right

I have some small ones that I'm willing to give away for the cost of shipping. I oculd give you a 700MHz CPU. Anybody who wants some socket 370 processors, let me know.

These cases are popping up in a few places here. I have that same computer but it was still working. So far all I've done is pull the front apart, remove the silver compaq logo on the front, bondoed the silver trim with compaq imprinted on it and now its sitting down in the basement with a few coats of flat black to take away some of the "BAM!" look at me silver. Looks like its going to come out real good.

ok I did some photoshop work so you can get the idea I was trying to explain above. basically everything in green here will be cutout, with the green acrylic window, so picture the green on the side here as glowing acrylic, thats what I'm going for

I think it would look more tidy if you had the writing Monster Energy accross the top and just the logo down the side in the centre.
But I think that was done by someone else hmm...

Wag made one similar, but that is no reason why it can't be done again.

those cases are awesome to mod. I used one of the athlon x64 versions that compaq came out with. check out http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?p=208443#post208443 and you can see what I did with it. I still got one more and I dont quite know what to do with it. Sorry for the thread hijack. Awesome work thus far.

well I went to the waterjet guy yesterday, finally. He's got a sweet setup, runs AutoCAD for the machine. Showed him what I had for this case, and a few parts for rocking case as well, he said to cut out the monster logo and all the lettering would run me less than $100 and it'd be done in 10 mins or so. Now I gotta save up some $$ :devious:

alright finally an update :D
been spending some more time with sketchup, watching tutorials, etc and came up with this semi-finalized design. I made everything in this except for the fan, fan grille and PSU. And I seem to have messed up on both the green plastic drive bay holding device...seems I mis-measured either the HDD case or the bracket itself, as the top two slots for the 5.25" bays line up, and the very bottom slot on the HDD cage line up, but thats to be fixed later, and also the length of the side panel. Also looking now, without the front plastic shroud (it wont be used) the side panel doesnt go all the way to the front of the case, so I'll have to find or make some kind of filler for that area

I've decided on making this into a (late) christmas present for my brother. He's got a dell c521:
http://www.hardware.info/images/news/dellc521.jpg
the problem is, this computer uses a far-from-standard mobo arrangement. I'll have to create a custom back panel, extend the oddly-shaped PSU's wiring, as well as remove some or all of the HDD cage currently on the compaq case to be able to fit in a new heatsink for the CPU.
in other news, I've stared the side-panel cutouts (waterjet wasnt cost-effective right now) and I'll get some pics of the progress uploaded tomorrow :D

I love the idea to use the logo (Monster) on the stealthed drive. I might use that once I actually build my HTPC. Hard part is, I have no place to work. My workbench is covered with wood crap from remodeling the house. Ah well. Put it on the list. Good job!

now as for cutting out the lettering, I think the reinforced cutting discs may be too big to get it done cleanly. BUT.....my dad happened to inform me that one of his friends has a laser cutter...and that friend happes to owe me a favor for working on his Harley :devious:

I'll probably end up keeping the dell heatsink only because its free. I'm trying to do this as inexpensively as possible, hence the reason for using the dremel instead of the waterjet guy. I'm thinking of fitting an 80 or 120mm fan into the hole where the HDD cage used to be, and using some spare carbon I've got laying around to make some ductwork to drect the air to the dell duct. should be easy enough :D
Nice Dremel Fu! +rep

small update...new redesigned sketchup model. I redesigned the back panel and drew up the dell mobo (even used a picture of it I took for the texture :D) and the odd Dell PSU, added a premade HDD, CCFL, RAM and front fan. I still need to draw up the dell heatsink and duct, then model a fan duct from the front fan to the dell duct

That looks pretty sweet! It should give off a nice green glow when it is against the wall with that green plexi.
Can you buy green plexi?
Oh, are you moving the front fan? It looks like it will be blocked by the front panel otherwise. I guess you have this all planned out though. I should mind my own business. :)
SXRguyinMA
01-31-2009, 11:17 PM
you sure can buy green plexi...got a few sheets already :D
good eye on the front panel fan...I was noticing that, may move the :M: cut on the front panel to be more over the fan, to act as a fan grill, and just do away with the green plexi in front. With how the dell heatsink setup is, thats the easiest and cheapest way I could see to get it to work
Jabyaeye
01-31-2009, 11:43 PM
I'd say match the cuts between the green plexi M and the fiber panel's M leaving the M and M's (sorry, I had too :D) for air flow. But cut the fiber M oversized, so you can see a nice outline of the green plexi's M. Then use green LEDs on the front fan to highlight the fan and the green plexi behind the fiber.
Maybe even leave the plexi without an M cutout and then drill uniform holes to give it that mesh look behind the fiber. Doable, but only if you wanted to invest the drilling time involved.
Just my two cents... ;)

After that, I pulled the mobo tray out and marked and drilled all the holes for the mounting of this dell mobo. I used 5mm hex head screws that I cut down, and some threaded aluminum and brass standoffs.

I should hopefully get teh carbon fan duct done up this weekend, or at least started. I dont have anywhere thats outside and heated to do it, and its a tad cold to work with the resin outside. And I cant do it in the basement because the fumes will go into the house :( I've got the cardboard mockup all done, just need to figure out how to transfer that to carbon :) Then I'm going to pick up some black spraypaint at wally world and do up the inside of the case.

alright I'm not making the duct from scratch. I'm going to cut the pieces from the leftover backplate of rockin case and epoxy them together, then just wrap the whole thing with a layer of carbon to give it a uniform look. heres the pics of the cardstock duct:

I wanted to get rid of the upside-down DELL on the heatsink duct, but didnt want to bondo it, sand it, paint it, etc. I just happened to have a monster can layin around, so I pulled out the scissors and heres what I ended up with :D

I havent decided how I'm going to attatch it yet, possibly with 4 small screws in the corners. I'm going to wait until the carbon part is done, as the carbon will extend over the dell duct a little
thats it for now, hopefully this weekend I can make some progress on the carbon

Looks good!
I think Plato said it best when he said "Necessity, who is the mother of invention", meaning you needed it, so you created a viable alternate ducting system to match.
Personally, I prefer the manilla folder taped together though. :D

alright, I spent the last 4 hours or so learning/using AutoCad 2007. I need to have the front panel details cut by the waterjet due to how hard it it to cut detail out of thick carbon, and how intricate the details are. Now its a matter of saving up some $$ to get it done (should be less that $100 to get the front panel done):
http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l11/sportrider12584/monster%20case/ACdwg.jpg
I decided that the oaval will be epoxied to the dvd drive tray, and seal flush when closed. the button will be similar, havent finalized the details yet. The "M" is where the fan intake is going to be. The dvd drive light is going to be interesting. The green plexi I have is 3mm thick, so that square cutout is 3x10mm. I'm going to swap the green LED in the drive for a UV one, and it'll light up the whole rectangle of green plexi.
I've also decided that the "monster" part of the cutout on the side panel will need to be waterjet cut, again due to hoe intricate the detail work is, I fear I'd severely mess it up with the dremel. However, the "energy" part of the side panel cutout I should be able to handle, as its being all cut out and tossed, and its nice straight lines.
The usual front panel connections (power button and LED, USB and audio ports) will be on the front of the side panel (due to the length of the mini-ide cable they use to hook it to the mobo), and those I will cut out with the dremel as well.
more details later :D
