Hey guys, quick question. Does anyone here have any experience with the mouse pads offered in the valve store (http://store.valvesoftware.com/). I saw a few designed i liked and was wondering what sort of quality was in the mouse pads. I was just wondering and figured this is as good a place as any to ask.
Thanks for any comments.

I guess you only need to worry if you have an old-school mouse...pads are just a fasion accessory these days, or a useful advertising space for some.
To be honest though, those valve lads and ladies are pure gamers through and through. They have a reputation to maintain, and I'd be willing to bet my liver that they won't allow it to be tarnished by shoddy merchandise.

EDIT: Scranton? As in Scranton PA? That's where I spent a number of days off when I was working in the US.

I never thought to look at the Valve Store... I do know what I want for Christmas (http://store.valvesoftware.com/productshowcase/productshowcase_HL2HeadCrabPlush!.html) from there though. It'll be like a parrot only better! lol

I disagree. A mousepad with a complicated image on it can confuse the hell out of an optical mouse, but a roller mouse will work fine.

True enough, but given the proliferation rate of optical mice you can expect that in pretty much any pad you pay for, this won't be an issue. I stand by my other statement that Valve value quality, and I'd expect to see this pass over to their merchandise.

No crap, lol. That game is so fast paced you HAVE to be hyped up on energy drinks and various illegal substances to not die constantly.

Thats what i was thinking but i wasn't sure, and yes Scranton PA. I don't spend much time there though I'm on campus for school then take off and leave town when class is out. ATM I'm on leave of absence anyway : / It's a nice place though.

You could email Valve and ask about the mousepads' compatibility with laser mice.

Eh, I'm sure it works fine, I was more concerned about the quality than anything else. I'll probably just order one up when i get the money. It's not like its a fifty dollar mouse pad or anything.

Laser mice will work on ANYTHING. I once used one on a cat to prove my point, and challenged my friends to find a surface it wouldn't work on. I was trying to prove that spending £30 on a mouse isn't so crazy. :D

I guess it doesn't matter what i use it on then lol. My buddies laser mouse leaves lil burn marks on his desk though, I would keep it away from the cat :lick:
Of course he also mouses so much that he smoothed the texture right out of his desk

Laser mouse leaving burn-marks? Unlikely. Either he's been mucking about with the laser or there's an anomaly with the desk. Possibly he's having you on...not that it's impossible, I just think it's unlikely.

Yeah i wasn't sure myself, I've seen the marks though. He claims that he "tested" it one night and left the mouse in a single position to see if a "burn" mark would show up. Apparently it did. I figured its more likely something w/ his desk. Its some sort of textured plastic material. the spot that he mouses on is completely smoothed and there are lil marks from were his mouse sits. I'll see if he can get a picture lol. For a while i thought it was just grime build up but it doesn't rub off if I remember correctly.
I know he opened it up to add weights in to it, but I'm sure he didn't screw w/ the electronics of it.

Almost anything. Mine had some trouble on the table that my computer is on, because it's painted glossy white. I'd imagine that they would work fine on just about any mousepad, though.

A laser mouse SHOULD NOT be anywhere near that powerful. They don't put cutting'burning lasers in them. Mine deffinately doesn't leave burn marks.

A friend has something like this (http://www.home-office-design.co.uk/acatalog/glass_desk_accessories.html) and his mouse can't handle it.
What's the difference between a laser mouse and an optical mouse? Is this just another misuse of the L word, like those LAZER white LED's?

To my understanding, Laser Mice use a focussed beam of light (hence the laser thing) while optical uses a normal radiating light source, usually an LED.
I can understand why a mouse that requires reflection to work would fail on a transparent desk. :)
