Not hardware, but software. Anyway

STALKER Shadow Of Chernobyl $5 at Steam This Weekend (http://store.steampowered.com/app/4500/)

Picking this up now, as its one of those games I desperately wanted to play but couldn't justify a buggy game for the original retail price. With winter break I might just be able to experience this game!

Edit: If steam would let me get through the checkup process without freaking out and slowing to a crawl :(
Edit: Finally got through on the steampowered page. Downloading now at 1.5Mb a second. Can't wait to play.

That's crazy, lol. For some reason I have two copies: one on Steam and one on DVD. It is a pretty cool game, though.

Ya, I was excited when I saw it was $4.99, grabbed it right away when steams webpage finally started functioning.

It crashed out/full blue screen within 10 minutes of playing though. Running memtest to make sure my RAM hasn't crapped the bed again, but all seems fine, so probably just a game issue.

Although I do think the bobbing is going to make me nauseous. Checking to see if I can turn that off now lol.

Yeah, that bobbing is a pain in the ass. In Clear Sky it's not as bad. Unfortunately, Clear Sky keeps glitching out on me and won't work right. :(

sweet deal, i think i got the first one for 20. i beat it finally and moved to clear sky, which i still need to finish. i never really had problems for ether accept that when i patched the first one it wouldn't let me reuse my old save... that pissed me off so much so i stopped playing it for a long time. now i'm focused on GTA 4 so we shall see what i get into next.

Well after attempting again to play this game, I'm not sure if its worth the hassle. I'm glad I only paid $5 for it because every 10 mins of playing I hit a blue screen of death.

Memtest came up fine. I knew it would, but wanted to narrow things down. Every other game runs fine for hours. STALKER crashes out within 10 minutes every time.

Steams version of STALKER is already patched up, so I don't know why I am still having issues. Quite frustrating, as it looks like an interesting and gritty game.

So, warning, even though its only 5$ it doesn't look like everything has been ironed out.

They were updated within the last month. Tomorrow i will try and see if there's anything newer. Full Blue Screen of Death 3 times, each around the 10 minute mark. Starting from the beginning of the game I can't even finish the first "Get the flash drive/ kill the bandits" mission before I blue screen.

Try turning on NX bit.

I'll try and go through and check to see that I didn't disable it, but shouldn't NX bit be on by default? I thought SP2 and later automatically turned NX bit on if the processor supported it?

Edit: Its enabled in the BIOS settings as well, and has been.

if you have a spare hard drive i would install windows then install needed drivers to get things going then install the game and play. its worth it IMO. its a great game and a big shame it has so many bugs.

and when you play clear sky its such a nice graphical improvement.

Yeah, it does look a LOT better. The gameplay is greatly improved as well.

Unfortunately, it is buggy, too. I think I have to restart for the third time now because the objectives keep getting messed up and I cannot continue.

Upgraded to the newest drivers, about to play and see if this helps.

All my NX bit settings were enabled, so that wasn't the issue. The game seems pretty cool, so let's hope the drivers were at fault.

Even if I can't get it to work for months even, $5 is a good price for a game. Wonder what next weekends deal will bring.

Edit: Even though my drivers weren't very old it seems that may have been the issue. Played for about half an hour without any issues.

Entered:
cam_inert 0
cam_slide_inert 0

Into the console, and that seemed to help the bobbing issue. It doesn't remove it completely, but makes it far more dealable. I was starting to feel like I couldn't focus and my head was spinning-like, so I tried that from another suggestion and it did seem to help a bit.

When you walk the camera moves to simulate headbobbing, like when you walk your head goes back and forth a bit... get up and walk around a bit and you'll see what I mean. lol

Its actually not like walking around. It to me at least, seems far more exaggerated.

As the arms don't move very much, they move, but not to the extent that everything else is moving. It's more like they bob your field of view to try and make it like real life, but if you walk in real life you cancel most of that movement out. The only way I could see the movement in real life being as exaggerated as the game is if you have a penguin type waddle.
