Looking on ebay for hdd and i found this, i thought it must be a type on the price, but ill ask here; http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Hitachi-UltraStar-300GB-15K300-3-5-SAS-HDD-15-000RPM_W0QQitemZ190273360035QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_ Components?hash=item190273360035&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

It just seems quit to much.

The VelociRaptor is close to USD$300. It is also a 300GB 15,00 RPM drive.

I used the Yahoo Currency Converter and $900AU is about $616US... it's going for over twice what we Ahmurrkinz pay for it. Kuh-razeh.

If it seems too much, it is probably too much. (looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, its probably a duck :p)

or...

If it has a (much) higher price tag than other similar hard drives, then you can probably draw your own conclusion. ;)

Bleh, why are you looking at Hitachi anyways? WD or Seagate all the way!

(btw, compared to similar drives from WD, its about twice the price)

Ozzies typically pay more for the same thing, I've noted. Except when it comes to good cars. =/

That drive is a SAS drive and not a SATA, which is why its more then your normal run of the mill SATA drive. SAS is Serial Atached SCSI drives, and they are mostly used in servers. SCSI drives have alway outpriced ATA or IDE.

He is still a little high at 900+ AUD.

That drive is available in the states for about $450 USD which is about $660 AUD.

Mwave.au has it for $777.

velociraptor is only 10k RPM. but everything else is right.

the drive linked as already stated is SAS not sata.

What a waste of money

For the common computer user.. YES! For the corporation that has millions of dollars worth of data... pretty cheap in comparison.

These drives are built to much higher tolerances, then the normal off the shelf drives, rated to run for thousands of hours non stop. You know what they say.. You get what you pay for, and that is an expense that corporations are willing to pay for reliability.

Unlike the UK government, who always take the cheapest option. Which always comes back to bite us in the ass.

I've always thought that Dave Matthews was closer to the truth:

You pay for what you get.

That being said, I'd be more than happy with three of those drives in a RAID 5 configuration on a remote server out in Butt**** Montana.
