heh im not modding the 360.. its brand new. and that would be easy its just a sata hard drive... im tryin to put one into my old xbox.. so i need a laptop 2.5 IDE cable to 3.5 IDE cable.. i want to know how i can make one myself and seeing as they r both 40 pin it should be very straight forward.. just would like to see if anybody here knows how to or knows where i can find out how to

Laptop HDs are actually 42pin, two for power (+12vdc and gnd), iirc.
If you want to put a bigger HD into your original Xbox, remember to copy everything from the old one over to the new one. Also, a standard 3.5" IDE drive will fit just fine.

i dont want a bigger one.. i already had a 160Gb one.. and a standard HD will no long fit.. im shavin my xbox down yet another inch.. it will be less than half the height of the original xbox (im goin to even have to knock down a few caps). and i will be rebuilding the xbox hard drive with a (no name mentioned) HD installer disc. 3.5 is too big to fit in the case.. so i am looking for a way to make my own 3.5 to 2.5 cable adapter.
i have seen many before for sale... but i lack the funds to do so.
my xbox is already heavily modified. slimmed down with the dvd drive removed TSOP flashed and has 4 USB ports, custom lighting and a 12V fan line instead of the stock 7V
Please refer to this http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16999 to get a better idea of which i am speaking about.. space is an issue, this is no original xbox

ahh, i was unaware that the first xbox can have a hard drive. i hated the first one since they took rare and ruined perfect dark. i however like the 360 and hence got one.

the xbox was the first console to ever have a hard drive..

didn't the ps2 come out before the first xbox?

PS2 had the hard drive addition.. not as a stock package... the Xbox was the first console to be produced with a HD stock..

i entirely understand that... hence why i have not mentioned anything bout the resources required... my mod is merely a hardware hack.. all software (which is the only illegal part) is not mentioned... not the names nor the source in which i get them.. i remember the last time somebody got shot down and it was considered approved aslong as no software was mentioned.. i am just looking for a way to make a 2.5 to 3.5 IDE adapter seeing as it will be near impossible to fit a 3.5Hd into my new xboxs size

Aside from the power pins on the 2.5" drive, the other 40 might be straight forward enough to solder them directly onto the hard drive. If you can actually find a 2.5" connector laying around then I don't see why it wouldn't work like that.

that makes me think its the same pin for pin and they add the power to the end 2 pins. but as you said not worth breaking the drive.

Those adaptors are like... $5. Guaranteed to work and you're not gonna mess any of your equipment.

if i had even $5 my priority would be food lolz everything i mod comes from scrap parts... all the cooling gear in my xbox? old scrapped PC parts (the CPU cooler is a old P3 socket 370 Intel cooler and the GPU cooler is scrapped from a dead MX400).. hence why i would like to make my own.. i have a old dead laptop motherboard from which i can get a laptop IDE port from and i have loads of IDE cables aswell.. as i mentioned in the beginning,

altho i do appreciate your concern in me keepin my useful parts useful. i sadly cannot afford said adapter.

If you don't have 5$ to spare, I don't think Modding should be a high priority. Jus' sayin'.

well a start on the adaptor would be a 2.5" pin layout.

the last 4 are for the laptop only. but i'm not sure how it would be wired up with those 5 outside of the 5v wire's and ground.

what does TYPE-(0-ATA) mean? is that another ground?
from what ive seen on adapters it is..
this should be rather easy when im sure of what to do with the last 4 pins..
thats messing with power and i really! dont wanna screw up :(
any help would be greatly appreciated
also is there a way i can find a substitute for a solder remover like suckers and what not?

For solder removal your options are pretty much solder suckers and solder wick.
I strongly advise against soldering directly to the hd pins, excess heat energy can damage the part, making it unusable. If you do choose to solder right to the pins, I say keep the solder on the pin for as short a time as you can.

i have a laptop IDE connector im scrapping from a laptop..
ive done solder work for quite some time
ive also found a picture of something that will help along with that pinout

i think im gunna get started on this sometime tomorrow

it seems (from the picture) that you don't need that TYPE-(0-ATA) connection. i would try the cable above and use the 5 volt and 1 ground connection, if it works then all is good, otherwise i doubt a missing cable would damage anything.
as for a solder wick just use some scrap copper wiring.
