Do I need to get UV lights in order to get that purple color?

The only non-UV purple lighting I've seen was in these fans (http://www.xoxide.com/quadpurled80.html) from Xoxide. Dunno if anyone else sells 'em, as they seem to be unbranded (generic).

No, but for the most part it'll require a lot of desoldering old lights and replacing them with new ones, which may or may not match the forward voltage and current of the previous diodes.

Some purple LEDs (http://www.lc-led.com/View/itemNumber/165)

If you are using CCF light rods, you can simply use a purple Crayola marker to coat a white stock rod and shazam, purple light!
