Intro
Alright, here is my third case mod project that I have "started". I say "started" because I haven't finished any of those 3 yet :P.
This one is going to be different for two main reasons:
One, the build cost is extremely low as I have most of the tools and materials already.
and most importantly,
Two, this is my main case and when I get my new motherboard next week, I am going to need a case to put my main system in.
That's right this is a 1-2 week build, so updates will be nearly every day, and the physical case being done by next Tuesday (final details will follow shortly thereafter).
Theme & Plans
The color scheme of the case will consist of a mix of gloss and flat black paint, Chrome/Polished metal accents and white lighting.
Here are my current plans:
-Major Casework-
[X] Disassemble case for cutting and painting
[X] Cut cable routing holes
[X] Paint interior of case gloss black
[X] Paint support bar, drive assembly and exterior rear panel flat black
[X] Reassemble painted parts
[X] Re-attach broken-off feet
-Details-
[ ] Order replacement front panel
[ ] Order/Make new window
[X] Replace front blue LEDs with white LEDs
[/] Remove built in temperature sensor and figure out what to put in its place
[ ] Install LEDs shining down exterior I/O Panel and PCI slots
[ ] Engrave "Lexa Pure" into window(?)
-Hardware-
[ ] Buy Arctic Cooling RAM sinks + Turbo Module
[ ] Buy 3.5" Scythe KAMA-Meter (To Control CPU and Memory Fans)
-Future-
[ ] Build dock for external hard drive
[ ] Build cover for bottom fan
Current Condition
As of right now the case is beat to hell from countless LANs and general abuse. Before I started this worklog, I've had to bend several pieces of metal back to their original positions. Right now the interior and exterior are fairly scratched up, with an abundance of scratches on the chrome front. I have a lot of work to do...
-Parts-
I've ordered 2 80mm and 2 120mm Aerocool Silver Lightning fans (http://www.aerocool.com.tw/images/accessory/silver%20lightning/silverlightning-photos/images/2-4_jpg.jpg), which will stick with the chrome theme and provide the white lighting. As of right now they'll be ran off of the motherboard, but thanks to TheGreatSatan's Satan Claus competition I will be installing a Scythe KAZE-Master 4 Channel fan controller to control all 4 of those fans.
Oh and one last thing: I got a new camera for Christmas (Canon SX10 IS), so the pictures should look pretty good (regardless of if I bother to set them up properly or not :P ).

Update #1
So I got all of my components out of the case, and cleaned it up a bit.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0417.jpg
I had already cut one of the cable routing holes on the back, and don't worry I'll be filing it smooth.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0418.jpg
Front of the case cleared.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0424.jpg
I still have to take my Windows stickers off of the back:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0429.jpg
I proceeded to drill out the rivets and remove the drive bay assembly, all of the interior shown here will be painted gloss black.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0457.jpg
And heres the drive bay assembly and support bar removed, later these will be painted flat black.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0467.jpg
That's all I've got for tonight, I should get a lot of stuff done tomorrow though.

YAY, another LEXA mod, I must have inspired people lol.
As for cleaning up the front of the case. The supposedly "brushed aluminium" pieces at the front of the case are actually plastic, not aluminium. Be careful what you use on it because you may strip off the vinyl or whatever they used. I just use Windex to polish my case up, works great.
I'll be watching Indy.

The thing is it is badly beaten up, so it definitely needs some form of resurfacing, are there any options for that?
Thanks,
Indybird
There is a metal alike sheet to cover fridges and others that could help you with the front. There are different colors and textures. I used it on my KNS-01 (old) mod. Search in hardware stores (decoration? Kitchens?).

I saw some self-adhesive fake stainless applied to an old dishwasher once. That might work for the front, although, if it comes in sheets, like formica, it might be a little hard, or make that impossible to go around some of the curves.

Wow, that is the stuff! I just checked it out, $9.99 for a 24" x 15" piece, I'll definitely be getting that in the near future...

I just got 3 of my 4(why?) new fans in the mail today! Quickly hooked them up to see how they look and...well, you tell me:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0472.jpg
I can't wait to see these reflecting off of the glossy interior!
I'm afraid there's no update tonight tho, I had a lot of work to do and just couldn't fit it in.

Lately I have become obsessed with white LEDs, I LOVE em lol. The fans looks great, a perfect contrast to the black and silver of the case.

Sorry for no update still, its just too late to be whipping out the sander. Anyway tomorrow I'll be sanding and cleaning the interior and rear panel. After that I have to find a place to paint in the middle of a Michigan winter... I can't do my basement because there is about 0 circulation and I can't paint outside or in my garage because the paint won't spray...so anyway I'll figure that out tomorrow.

That's why I put the mod for my main computer case on hold. I'm using bondo on the bezel, and it leaves some really bad fumes. I did a test with spray paint outside to see how it came out, but I'm done with using it outside during the winter.

So I emailed MNPCTech about the brushed chrome vinyl, and they said that it would not be able to conform to the shape of the front panel. Thanks again for the find, but I'm afraid I won't be able to use it.
So how do you guys think that NZXT got this effect on the surface? Because I know that it is just plastic right under it...
Also, I will be posting another update later.

I dunno how they got the effect. However I do have a whole front fascia (with broken door) I could send you but it would probably get broken in the post. Have you tried emailing NZXT to see if it is possible for them to send you replacement front alu plates? I am sure they would. The hinge on my original fascia broke and they sent me a whole new one, LCD and all.

I didn't think to e-mail them about the door, but I've already e-mailed them about my window (which is also in bad condition), and I don't know if they would send me both. If you would send me your front panel I appreciate that so much. +rep just for offering! EDIT: Obviously you've been too helpful to me already! I can't give you more rep yet.

Update #2
Now I'm getting the final sanding done before I paint tomorrow morning. The only thing I have left to do (tomorrow and before painting) is to find a new way to attach the curved feet and top accent curve to the case without NZXT's original method.
So here's the back panel void of all stickers and all ready to be painted.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0488.jpg
I got the motherboard tray and interior all sanded out.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0490.jpg
I got my second (and final) cable routing hole cut-out.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0491.jpg
And of course the top panel.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0492.jpg
More also I got my 4th and final Aerocool Silver Lightning 120mm fan in the mail Friday.

Nice progress mate. I will look into postage to the US. If I send just the alu brushed pieces and package it well in a box it should be ok. I was gonna hang on to them but a modder in need is a friend in deed ;).

Ok, to send a parcel to the US weighing 0-250g will cost $9.05AUD via Air Mail, can be up to $48.25 if I use ECI . A parcel weighing 250g-500g will cost $14.85AUD.
See if NZXT will send you new panels, if not we can arrange something.

Hey sorry about no update yet. I have been trying to find a place to paint. I stopped working tonight after I got a whole area of my basement set for painting only to find out that the window that i was going to use for ventilation is frozen or rusted shut (and I cannot get this thing open). I was really hoping to get the main part of this case done for tomorrow so I could put my reconfigured system in it (with my new ASUS P5Q-E), but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. I guess a more realistic estimate is next weekend.
Also, I e-mailed NZXT on Sunday but I still haven't gotten a response, I think I'm just going to call them tomorrow though.

what kind of window is it? I used to build windows for a living.
if its a double hung sometimes the tentioners get stuck. tab the window out and cock eye it to get the bits to come out. you'll need a screw driver to wind the tentioners back up. should look like a cork screw with a white plastic tab on the end.
if its a old wooden one just might have to wait on it to get warm enough for the joints to expand.

Hey Twigsoffury thanks for the help, but I got good news.
I got a hold of a hot-rod shop nearby about using their painting booth, and they offered to paint my whole computer for free! They're going to do an Ultra-Gloss paint job on the outside and inside, and a semi-gloss on the back panel and drive cage. Since my dad works near the place, he's going to take the parts there tomorrow on his way to work; they said it would all be done in a few hours, so my Dad will pick it up on his way back from work.
More also, I got my motherboard today and I can't wait to put everything in. No updates tonight I'm afraid, but tomorrow should be interesting...

Update #3
So in this update, I got my new motherboard and prepared all of my parts to be sent out for (professional! and free!) painting. Being a hot-rod shop I have a slightly different selection of finishes. Heres how it is now: All of the exterior parts (except for the rear panel) will be a Super-Gloss black, whereas the rear panel and interior will be a Medium-Gloss black.
Like I said earlier I got a package in the mail today.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0574.jpg
Opened it up and sure enough, my new ASUS P5Q-E.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0575.jpg
Here's some more board shots:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0576.jpg
Plenty of connections:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0578.jpg
A like the design on the northbridge cooler.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0579.jpg
And much like a higher end motherboard, it has onboard power and reset buttons!
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0580.jpg
And I don't even have to paint the I/O shield to match.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0581.jpg
Back to the case I just got all of my parts prepared:

And lastly heres everything I'm sending out:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_0612.jpg
I'll have these all back before the end of the day tomorrow, and I absolutely cannot wait!
Also, before I go, NZXT still hasn't gotten back to me, I'd really like to get a hold of them so I can get all of the much-needed replacement parts.
Anyway, I'll be back tomorrow with the results.

Oh god! My dad got home today and said that it won't be done until friday. Apparently the guy there thought it was a small, uncomplicated case that he would be able to prepare and paint in a half an hour. He said he wouldn't have time to work on it until Friday, but he will get it done for sure then.
Yeah, so the wait is going to kill me...
Until then I'm going to try and get the new white LEDs to replace the LEDs in the front.

I'm not really complaining that they're it'll take longer its just that the anticipation is intense; the quality of this paint job is going to 100x that of what I could've done on my own (with my sketchy-as-hell equipment).

"George's Collision" on 9 mile in Eastpointe. I think the main reason they're doing it is that they're kinda doing my dad (who works for the city) a favor, as he's helped them out before.

Not too far away; I live right off of 9 mile. But in Farmington Hills. I will have to check them out and get a price quote from them, as I might want my case to turn out a little better it would with spraypaint.

Well in case you didnt guess by the lack of updates, I still haven't gotten my painted parts back. Apparently I didn't prepare the surfaces properly for painting, so he has to prepare the surfaces himself. But I don't mind too much, it just means its going to look a lot better than I previously expected. I also got a preview on the already painted parts that came out fine and boy do they look good. The Medium Gloss is really more of a satin finish and the super gloss is...well super glossy.
Anyway, I'm getting everything back Monday for sure, so the next update will be then.

Hahaha...that was funny. Yeah so guess what this time? Thanks to the sub-freezing temps here in Michigan the guy paint this for me couldn't finish painting my case because he couldn't get the paint room (or something relating to the paint) warm enough to paint properly. So he said Tuesday (er today I guess), but I'm not getting all excited this time...we'll see.

Update #5
I got my rivets (no LEDs yet), and it is time to put this thing together. By the way I chose to go with standard unpainted rivets because I want the bare rivets to contrast the black panels.
So I got to putting all of the rivets in...

Got the drive cage in:

Got the support bar in.

Heres the rear panel, you can see the contrast between the bare rivets/screws and the case.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_1415.jpg
I got the door re-assembled. Until I get my new side door from NZXT I'll be using my old beat up window and handle.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_1416.jpg
Now that the case is together I can get to putting the fans in.
Here is the front fan that will blow over my hard drives.

And here's the whole interior up and running.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_1444.jpg
So I am stunned by how well this turned out so far. Unfortunately these pictures really don't give a perfect representation of how the system looks running, but they give you a decent idea.
So all I really have left to do is
-Paint my wireless card slot
-Change the front blue LEDs to White
-Get a new side door and front panel
-Get a 92mm Silver Lightning fan, install that on my CPU cooler and move the 80mm to the bottom of the case.
-Do a little more work on cable management

I just updated the temps after having moved the 80mm fan from the CPU cooler to the bottom; the difference it made to my graphics card temps is amazing.
This mod obviously isn't just for looks!

The paint looks fantastic, much better than the stock, orange peeled exterior. That's the one thing I regret not doing to my LEXA, giving here a new exterior coat.
The effect of those fans is very good plus you get excellent temps. My water cooler Q6600 sits at 34c but there is also an 8800GTX in the loop lol. +rep

Update #6
Ok, so I went to Radio shack and picked up my two Ultra-bright white LEDs (for $2.00!), and a two channel slide-switch:

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_1683.jpg
So I decided to the switch on the ridge inside of the front door, and so I proceeded to remove the front panel there and clear all of the LEDs and the diffuser out of the way:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_1686.jpg
After about 20 minutes of drilling and filing in a very awkward space I finally got the opening for the switch and got it mounted.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_1688.jpg
After another 20 minutes of wiring everything up and closing it up I was finally done putting changing everything out. Heres how it looks completely installed with the front panel all closed up.

Well lets go take a look at these cool new white LEDs:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_1692.jpg
Woah...wait. THESE LEDs ARE PURPLE!
Well apparently I just so happened to grab the one mismatched bag of ultra-violet LEDs from the White LED drawer...shmeh... So I'm probably going to go get actual white LEDs saturday.
However, the switch works great:
Here's the Power and HDD LED on:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_1693.jpg
and switched off:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_1694.jpg
This switch combined with my fan controller thats coming in the mail real soon, should allow for nearly 100% control of the light coming from my computer, so that its not lighting up my room when I'm watching a movie or sleeping.
So I should try and get the white LEDs soon and get that finished.
More also, I'm going to try and order the new side-window and front-panel from NZXT. Since my case is out of warranty its going to cost me $58 to get both replacement parts...shmeh...
Neeways, Enjoy.

Nice LED mods, will look even better when you get the actual white LEDs. I can't believe NZXT don't make a LEXA with white LEDs and a black interior, I think it would be a big seller.

Wow, bad luck with the mismatched LED's, bit of a bummer. Oh well, still looking great.

They did, but unfortunately my case was outside of the warranty period. To get the new front door and front panel its going to cost $58 :(. As my speakers died out and I had to get some parts for my bass guitar, I havent had a lot of spare cash and I don't know when I'll be able to order those parts.

Well I went out and got my actual white LEDs today. Swapped them out for my purple ones et voila. Well...they're really hard to see in the day-light, so I'll wait until later to take a picture of them. My only problem as far as I can see is that they are not as pure white as the LEDs in the fans, but its not terrible.

Update #6.5
Alright, as promised earlier here's the after pic:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_1760.jpg
The camera didn't pic it up, but the front LEDs more off-white (unfortunately). However I still think it looks great.

Update #6.75
So after a month of great work dealing with returns and shipments, TheGreatSatan made sure his promise of getting me a fan controller (from the Satan Claus thread) was fulfilled.
Thanks again TGS.
I got my Scythe Kaze-Master 5.25" Fan controller in the mail today and proceeded to install it. After about 45 minutes I had the fan controller installed, 4 of my 5 fans hooked up to it, 4 temperature probes installed and nearly my whole system's cable-management reworked. Here it is installed:
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a29/Indybird/NZXT%20Pure/IMG_1850.jpg
Not only does it look cool, but it does exactly what I need it to. Heres how I have it configured right now:
Fans
CH1: CPU Cooler 92mm Fan
CH2: Rear Exhaust 120mm Fan
CH3: Bottom Intake 80mm Fan
CH4: Top Exhaust 80mm Fan
Temp Probes
CH1: CPU Cooler
CH2: Memory
CH3: Graphics Card
CH4: Hard Drive
My front 120mm intake fan is currently attached to my mobo, but I'm planning on getting a 2 Channel 3.5" Kaze Fan Controller and dedicating that one to the (Future) Memory and Processor Fan, and have only case fans on the 5.25" Kaze Master.
I will get some pics of the greatly improved cable management up some time this weekend.
