Well, lets start by saying that I am a BIG fan of the show Miami Ink, a BIG fan.
And I just started to think if anyone on TBCS is a fan aswell? Have any of you got some ink of your own, have some of your family members got some? Or plans for some of your own? Id love to hear peoples opinions on the art of tattooing, and what people think of tattoos.
Lets get going!

My brother has a dragon on his left shoulder and the Southern Cross on his left pec, neither of which are really great tattoos, plus I cant find any pics of them, so ill wait untill he gets home from work then get a couple pics.
This (http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=eefkflm7Yjk) is most definately one of the best tattoos that has been done at Miami Ink.

I've got 5 pieces so far..
Upper left arm - Angel with a sword, wings spread. It wraps a little more than half way around my arm.
Upper right arm - Virgin Mary, based on a photo of a statue I found
Left Calf (back) - Russian Hammer and Sickle, with a crossed tools below (hammer and wrench)
Right Calf (back) - Red Maple leaf with a blue star behind
Left Calf (front) - Tribal / linestyle Angel face with wings/halo, and a rosary that hangs down onto my ankle (not finished yet)
Looking for some pics right now.. but I might just take a few new ones. :)
I'm a real big fan of Aaron Laidig's art and style (the reverse image color bombs are THE bomb), but I dont hold color really well, so I'm looking for some other ideas. :)

I've never watched the show, can't get it for free over the air here. :) But I do have one piece of work, a rose wrapped around a dagger on my left arm. I have plans for a large one that I want on my back but it has thus far been cost-prohibitive. I've been quoted $900 to $1200 for it. When I think what I could do with my computer for that money the ink plans usually slide down the priority ladder.

I never liked piercings but I do like tats. That is a pretty good show, I know for a fact that the chick (forgot her name) was flown over to do the Schoolies festival in Queensland and she came down to the Schoolies festival in S.A also. She did my mates Turkey (http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/332317/2/istockphoto_332317-cartoon-turkey.jpg) (less cartooney, more detailed and black and white) on his right forearm. I know it looks pretty crap in colour but in black and white it looks awesome. He is getting this one (http://images.acclaimimages.com/_gallery/_SM/0093-0604-1714-5639_SM.jpg) (turkey on platter only) on his left forearm.
For my 18th (April) I am getting one, haven't decided yet but I want it to incorporate nautical stars. Also my mates and I are getting a commemorative one on our trip to New Zealand either this year or next year.

just curious, does the turkey have a special meaning?
The boy 4rm oz
01-12-2009, 08:35 AM
@billygoat
We had a discussion (between mates) in year 10 about the tatts we wanted and the discussion came around to animals. We named all the common animals then went onto discussing animals that you don't see often or at all. When turkey came up we all had a laugh and went on the net to look for some pics. After finding no actual turkey tatts one of my mates bet another one that he wouldn't get a turkey tattooed to his arm. My mate said he would and after 2 years of waiting and after his 18th birthday he got it done. $250AUD out of pocket and a sore arm later he was very pleased with the result. It actually looks quite good I must admit, I will try to get a pic of it and post it up.
EDIT
I actually found the original pic they used to make the preliminary sketch, here it is:
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/351/turkeyweb3650336wu3.gif (http://imageshack.us)
My mates turkey is this one exactly but it is just black and white and bigger.

I've watched the show a few times and it's pretty crazy what they can do plus the characters that come in can be pretty hilarious. Personally, Kat was my favorite since I'm not a fan of color tats to say the least.
I wouldn't mind some tattoos but I'm waiting for the moment to strike where I feel I SHOULD put a certain something on myself... not just go in with a picture I like and want it on me because it looks cool.
The boy 4rm oz
01-12-2009, 09:52 AM
If your referring to the turkey they actually found the pic for him, he just went in with the idea, he was pretty eager for the turkey. The turkey was more then "for just looking cool", my mate that made the bet is no longer with us so the turkey represents him and how us as friends and family suffered. That's why my friend was so eager to get the turkey, as a mark of respect and to honour the bet made with our lost mate.

Kat is a really great artist, theres no doubt about that, but she was just such a b**ch, seriously. She was talking s**t about the shop to her husband (at the time) and to the person she was tattooing, while working in it! Sure, shes nice and all, but she really does think that shes the best thing since sliced bread. As much as I like her work, she's just completely up herself, which is one of the reasons she was fired from Miami Ink.
Small piece of useless information for you, im pretty sure that Kat Von D was taught the art of tattooing by Garver's close friend Tim Hendricks.
And Kirk Hammet was taught how to play guitar by Steve Vai.
And Lars Ulrich taught Joey Jordison (I think)
So there ya go.

Close...both Steve and Kirk were students of Joe Satriani, along with Larry LaLonde from Primus.
Edit:
And Lars Ulrich taught Joey Jordison (I think)
Doubtful. Joey grew up in Iowa, and Lars was born in Denmark. Metallica was in their beginning stages when Joey first learned to play drums at the age of 8, which would be 1983 (note, this is two years before I started banging the skins). According to Wikipedia, Ulrich posted an ad in the Los Angles Recycler tabloid to recruit the original lineup in 1981. By 83 they were beginning to tour, thus leaving no time whatsoever for instructing students.

P.S. how would you describe the pain you feel when getting inked?
The boy 4rm oz
01-13-2009, 12:54 AM
My mate described it as getting an injection with the needle being dragged through your skin lol so not that bad really. I'm not a fan of needles (the sight creeps me out) but the pain they inflict has never bothered me. I guess spending the first 7 years of my life in and out hospital builds up an immunity to stuff like that lol.
I have decided on the southern cross made from nautical stars on my right forearm.
KiLLERMAN21
01-13-2009, 01:23 AM
Yeah, my brother says it feels like a hot wire going in and out, but everyones pain threshold and tolerance is different, so I guess ill just have to wait and find out for myself.
Now, Jase, I really think that you should change your idea a bit, only becasue the southern scross is such a cliche tattoo (not trying to be un-patriotic) and is over-used SO much. The nautical star is a nice symbol, but I just think that you could make something much better out of your ideas. Me and D-F have talked about one for him (which would be oh so sweet) that involves things that he loves to do. I really think that doing something involving the things you love would be a much better idea than a southern cross.
Sorry, I had to say it, im not trying to make your idea sound like crap, although it may have seemed like it, I was just trying to give some constructive criticism... that you didnt really ask for...
The boy 4rm oz
01-13-2009, 01:40 AM
Yeah I know the southern cross is cliche, you see it on everything from cars to people but never with nautical stars ;). That was only a preliminary idea, I have 4 months until I get it done.
KiLLERMAN21
01-13-2009, 02:12 AM
Yeah, true, you never see them with nautical stars which are cool, but nautical stars are a thing for sailors mainly, they are to do with a compass and the eight main points, and are something that sailors get to help them 'find their way home' when they are out at sea.
The boy 4rm oz
01-13-2009, 02:32 AM
Yeah it originated from sailors where it represented Polaris (the north star) which could be used in navigation when a compass was lost but it has a deeper meaning. The nautical star (today) represents guidance, hope and protection. The 5 points represent Life, Liberty, Peace, Justice, and Freedom. Different colours and different styles mean different things but I prefer the 5 pointed version.
I am drawing up a design in GIMP ATM, when I am happy with it I will post it up for you to see.

I want a tattoo of a socket AM2 on my forehead.
I can point the north star out at any time.
had to become familar with it when i got my bi latterl equitorial mount for my telescope.
right off the little dippers handle.
two stars off the big dipper
its not in the north either
people get confused between polar and magnetic north.
The boy 4rm oz
01-13-2009, 03:05 AM
You know there is only 2 places in the world where a compass will point true north. One being the Bermuda Triangle and the other being a little place off the cost of China. Both experience the disappearance of ships.
Another random fact by me lol.

did you know the earths magentosphere its flipping polarity
There is a hole in the atlantic ocean that can instantly kill passing sat's and planes.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,468268,00.html
Yea dude in a couple hundred years there will be a span of time when the magnetosphere "stops" Were all going to be instantly burned alive everything.
They now theroize this is what happened to Mars. Although thats a little deeper because mars iorn core cooled off.
The churning of our liquid iorn (plus other ferrites) gives us our magentosphere and the direction of the waves themselves (travels from S to N churning in on itself in the middle)
So really the bermuda Triangle pretty much sits in the middle of this spot.
So "they" are saying that this is TKO'ing all the ships electronics and sending planes to there death.
but if you stand in the spot you'll see that the needle's North faces south. you'll also get cancer extremely fast cause the lack of magneto doesn't filter out the high speed Z particles.
Z particles make astronauts see bright white flashes when they pass through there brain.
imagine what that does to DNA proteins.

i have that done on my left knee, first one i did after buying my machine
only thing i dont like is the purple ink i chose is too dark...so the star looks near all black

Again Jase, I have to say something :) With your star that youve designed, it looks really great, but I dont think that the blur effect on the outer edge would be very good, it sure looks great in the picture, but over time the ink could move and the colours MAY merge together and give you a pile of orange-black mush next to your awesome star. Thats only what I think my happen, the artist could well tell you that that wont happen.

Doesnt that happen to all tattoos?
My grandpa had a couple Navy tats
the blue blob on his forearm was popeye.
just looked like someone injected some ink under the skin randomly.

Na the blur is meant to be a sort of flame effect. I was just mucking around with the effects of GIMP lol. I have to add more blur than colour it into flame.

I've been wanting a tattoo forever, just never went and did it. I'm a fan of the tattoo's no one can see normally, but you can bust them out when needed/wanted. I've had a few different designs over the years but whats common between them is that I want it on my back, either between my shoulder blades and large, or medium-ish and on my shoulder blade.
The content, ehhh its changed over the years. It was Asian/Chinese based when I was teaching kung-fu, but once I got sick and had to leave that behind the asian theme has been slowly fading from me, so I have no clue what I will eventually get.
My younger brother got a pretty cool dragon on his arm that he drew from the top of his head when he went in there. I think the artist could have done a little better, but I'm not one to criticize as I have not tried it myself.
KiLLERMAN21
01-13-2009, 11:36 PM
@Twigsoffury - Yes, all tattoos, over time, will fade and the lines will become wider and less sharp as your skin stretches and the ink moves.
@TB40 - I thought thats where you were heading, flames could look pretty cool on the star, chuck your design up when you get it done ;)
Ive got a whole bunch of tattoo pics, ill put some up now

I know where twigs is coming from. It may be an amazing piece of art but something that big is just a waste of money.
My cousins friend got a tat when he turned 18. It is a squid, full colour, running down his left arm from his shoulder right down to his finger tips where the tentacles end. It is an amazing piece. The colour used and the detail is amazing, it looks almost life like. The downside is that he spend $10,000 on it.
I have had this discussion with Sean (b4i7) before. It's the same as an awesome PC mod. You acknowledge that it is awesome and one of a kind but when you factor in your own style, thoughts, views and bank balance you would never do it yourself.
Take Paul's "Doom 3" and TGS's "The Great Satan" mods (no offense guys) for example. They are both excellent examples of modding and truly awesome mods, each unique in their own way and fantastically executed but would I want to make one? The answer is no.
KiLLERMAN21
01-14-2009, 09:27 AM
What? A waste of money? I cant disagree more, something like that is well worth the money IMO, even if it cost quite a large amount in anyones mind. Something like that is a true piece of art and no one else in the world would have something the same as what you have on your back, even if it cost a very large amount of money. I myself would be quite prepared to spend that kind of money for a back piece if the quality was up to the standard of that one!
If you want to put down a tattoo, have a look at the Mario themed back piece! Now THAT is a waste of money!

I agree, it is a wonderful piece of art and I can tell you like it a lot. I can admire the skill and detail of the tat but at the end of the day if you asked me if I wanted to get it (even if i didn't have to pay) the answer would be no. I like it very much but I wouldn't get it, not due to the price or anything like that. I like the tat, I can admire the tat but I don't need the tat if you catch what I mean.
