If you have an xp CD, you might want to do a repair installation.

run the repair console and use "fixboot" and "fixmbr" that should get everything going

edit: you will need a windows disk of the same type you have installed, xp pro only works on pro and home works on home. its gay but were stuck doing it, on occasion a pro disk works with home.

sounds like a dying hdd to me.... or bad ram. Start with testing your ram, and if that doesnt solve it, backup your data!

Me either. You can use your CD to format as many times as you like. Activation might not go smoothly, but if you call M$ and tell them that you had to reformat due to a HDD failure, and that copy of XP is only on ONE computer, they'll activate it for you over the phone just fine.

I agree. I've reformatted my drive so many times I forget, all using the same key from the XP Home CD I bought and I've never ahd any issues

Tell them you had to do a wipe and they will give you a new code. I have a builder's copy and can use it again and again and again and.....

you can't, there for builders, OEM's there a bit like VLK's you can't buy them unless your a company and you mass install machines.

If you can get a friends copy of XP cd you can do it, or buy an OEM copy from ebay without an COA for like £10, then start the disc, enter recovery console, and type the following:

x:
cd i386
copy NTDLR.dl_ c:\
expand c:\NTDLR.dl_ c:\NTDLR.dll
copy c:\NTDLR.dll c:\windows
copy c:\NTDLR.dll c:\windows\system32
copy c:\NTDLR.dll c:\windows\system32\dllcache
fixmbr
fixboot

(Where X is your cd drive, normally D)
if expand c:\NTDLR.dl_ c:\NTDLR.dll doesnt work try:
extract c:\NTDLR.dl_ c:\NTDLR.dll (Cant rem which one it is)
