Time for a new mod.

Project: Hemi-Cuda

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/1970cuda1.jpg

This is a present for my Brother-In-Law who is a HUGE mopar fan. He's been drooling ever since I built SuperbeePC (http://www.pcmodhouse.com/id54.html) for his parents.

In the same spirit as Superbee, my Brother in law does not know!!

The specs thus far are:

Foxconn A74MX (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186151)
AMD Phenom 9150e
4GB DDR2-800

Video card and Hard drive are still unknown

Alrighty, the victim case is the Orange In-Win F430 (review coming soon!)

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030328.jpg

This vent is the dumest thing ever thought of. It's nearly totally useless, minus it's "cool look"

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030335.jpg

Fortunately, it comes right off!

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030342.jpg

This is what you're left with

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030341.jpg

Here's where I'm cutting. This case needs a window with an intake fan, not a vent

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030340.jpg

The drive bays have a bit of mesh on them, but not the see through kind

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030348.jpg

I've already taped off the panel where the window will go

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030351.jpg

And painted the bays. I'm not sure what I'm going to have besides a DVD drive, so the painting is "just in case"

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030353.jpg

I put the bays back in, for now.

Is that a metal flake I'm seeing on the case? If so, are you planning on leaving it that way?

Really looking forward to this... I'm less than enthusiastic about the Fauxrarri lower bit of the front panel, do you have plans for that?

I think it's a speaker right now. I want to put mesh there and backlight it.

More done.

I added the first DVD drive. I say that because there may be more

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030390.jpg

I got my Motherboard

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030391.jpg

And added the Phenom x4 9150e

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030392.jpg

Here's the 500GB My Book I got at Office Depot for $39!!

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030393.jpg

And in the flesh

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030394.jpg

There were no obvious screws so I had to pry it open

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030395.jpg

And there you go, a 500GB internal SATA drive

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030396.jpg

I cut out the window too. I will clean it up tomorrow night as today is Sci-Fi Friday

HAHA I love that TGS, you get the external drive to use it as an internal HDD lol. It was a bargain though, the cheapest WD 500GB HDD I can find is $88.00AUD.

The window is looking good my friend. I can't wait for more.

Hello

I'd like to see review of this V8 more than that case.
Case is just atrocious for me. This +10 to roll for Cool Lookin' from panel is worthless :D. At least it's in good hands.

Ahh gotcha. Plymouth called it Tor-Red; Dodge referred to it as Hemi Orange. Honestly, from the pics, it looks to be more Go-Mango/Vitamin "C" (Dodge and Plymouth's names respectively).

A990 engine was used for racing and made a appearance in one or two mopars.

was a 440ci hemi

Don't forget about the 10 clyinder 7.6L hemi they've got rolling around in some work trucks. dont know the Ci but its huge.

Google 1965 Dodge 440 Coronet

only a hand full were made but its got that 440ci hemi in it.

d_stilgar

Well, considering that the fan on the heatsink now is 120mm (I assume), you would need four 30mm (25 maybe) fans on the side of it, and then make some pipes like these pictured.

http://www.streetperformance.com/ART/PRODUCTS/101436/GP119.jpg

http://www.bbexhaust.com/truck/srt10/images/srt10-headers.jpg

Looking at the heatsink again now though, I'm not sure you'll be able to do that on the sink itself, although the metaphor for the CPU being the engine, and then having the heatsink look like an engine, would be pretty cool.

You might be able to do that same idea on the side of the case though. Although, like I said before, I think you probably already have a vision in mind.

TheGreatSatan

Not sure if something like that would really stay within your design vision or not though.

d_stilgar
02-02-2009, 07:50 PM
You could go with eight straight carburetor pipes like these, although it's a little more hot-rod than muscle car.

Or bent . . .

You could also go for the Shaker that was on the Hemi Cuda. Here's a pic of a 1/6 scale model that you can find online for ~$30. I'm not sure what the original shaker dimensions are, but if 1/6th of that is skinnier than the top of the case, then it will fit with little modification (I love the HemiCuda, and thought of doing a mod like this using this idea. I got the inspiration from your superbee) I should add that you would probably have to put 426 on the side instead of 440 since the Shaker was featured on the 426 only I believe.

http://www.northerntool.com/images/product/images/800855_lg.jpg

Edit: I stand corrected. This is from a rendering of the Chrysler turbine car if it had made it to production.

TheGreatSatan
02-03-2009, 10:16 AM
The ideas are fine, but the actual converting it to a Computer case is saomething entirely different. Maybe there's some thing available at 1:6 scale?

Also, since this is a car theme mod, I would love a tape deck or AM/FM tuner in one of the bays. The only tape deck I saw was white and I doubt that cassettes were in the 1972 cars anyway. Any AM/FM tuners available for a PC bay?

Cobra
02-03-2009, 11:36 AM
hmm maybe hit the swap meets for an old 8 track player and convert it so when you hit the eject button the dvd tray comes out of it. shouldnt be hard to gut one and wire in an optical drive

The 426 Hemi model is 1:6 scale. I would say to get a 70s era car radio, then modify it to fit in the front bay (or several). Then modify the power button so it also diverts the audio from the computer to the radio.

FuzzyPlushroom
02-03-2009, 07:41 PM
I agree with the '70s-radio-front idea. I'm planning on throwing a Kenwood cassette deck in one of my cases eventually ('tis only half-finished) and wiring the line-level-out RCA connectors to one of the audio-in ports on the board. I reckon if you found the right eight-track player, you could do something similar.

TheGreatSatan
02-03-2009, 08:51 PM
Oh boy! I've got one hell of an idea!!

Find an old 8 track player or AM radio for a car and remove the bezel. Then fit the bezel over the DVD bay and thus stealth it!

Could you do a shifter(s) handle on top? Not sure what is correct for the vintage mopar but my mustang has a hurst shifter that looks like this:

http://www.hurst-shifters.com/hurst-products/Knobs-and-Handles/UNIVERSAL-HURST-T-HANDLE-BRUSHED-FINISH_2

Although the 12 volt button would be interesting a reset(?)

Another thought: what about a Tach tied into temp or performance?

TheGreatSatan

I do like a Tach or an actual speedometer from a cuda on the bezel somewhere. Maybe hack it into the two 3.5 bay doors?

If there's another Mopar of the same era that uses a similar gauge, that'd be fine too. At long as it's got the same font it shouldn't really make a difference.

Great stripe, by the way. Looks sweet with the "440" decal. +rep

You could try a PC gauge with printed insert behind to match the font and the look. Here's a recent one that gamer_from_aust posted:

If you go with an original gauge, here a roll your own how to:

Alright some things to discuss.

I got the temp guage.

http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp143/TheGreatSatan/P1030567.jpg

http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp143/TheGreatSatan/P1030570.jpg

I thought about adding it to the 3.5" bay but it'll probably look stupid.

http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp143/TheGreatSatan/P1030583.jpg

Your thoughts?

The radio came too.

http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp143/TheGreatSatan/P1030584.jpg

Now, at best my drive bay is almost 6 inches

http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp143/TheGreatSatan/P1030574.jpg

. . . . . .but the radio from dial to dial is 7 inches wide.

http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp143/TheGreatSatan/P1030576.jpg

I'm not really sure I can make this work.

It was fun to take apart though

http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp143/TheGreatSatan/P1030578.jpg
http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp143/TheGreatSatan/P1030580.jpg
http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp143/TheGreatSatan/P1030581.jpg

If I can't use it, I would love to encorporate this logo into the drive cage or something. It wouldn't be something you could normally see, but it would be a cool extra touch

http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp143/TheGreatSatan/P1030577.jpg

Lastly, I WILL be doing hood pins on top. I kind of have to make it look good with washers and hood pins. I haven't nailed down the final design just yet

http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp143/TheGreatSatan/P1030582.jpg

Drum Thumper
02-14-2009, 03:03 PM
That's a tough one on both parts. I'd consider putting the temp gauge in one of the 5 1/4" drive bays. The radio, on the other hand...that's a toughie.

Edit: What about making a base for this like you did with Project Hell?

DonT-FeaR
02-14-2009, 09:28 PM

The hood scoop arrived from Hong Kong, but it's too shiny

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030586.jpg

So i took some sand paper to it

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030594.jpg

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030595.jpg

And flat black paint just as I used on the side stripe

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030597.jpg

After about 5 coats

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030599.jpg

It's on top for reference, not actually mounted. I'm going to take a hole saw to the top for an exhaust fan under the scoop

KiLLERMAN21

Nice TGS, looks really sweet. With the exhaust fan on top, are you going to make soe sort of funnel for it? So the air flows through better? Anyway, it looks sweet, +rep.

The boy 4rm oz
02-15-2009, 04:25 AM
I still think you can make the radio work, as a stealth cover for the disk drive anyway.

As for the temp gauge I think you could encorporate it into the bottom 5 1/2" bay and the two 3.5" bays. You could make a mounting bracket and use alu or mesh to fill the remaining bay space around the gauge.

The hood pins are a really neat idea and the scoop looks fantastic, whack a fan under it and you will have no problem with air flow at all.

After protecting the surface I decided on a good place to mount the hood pins

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030677.jpg

30mm seems like a good spot

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030679.jpg

The pins had to be cut way down because they had to go into the case without interferring with the DVD drives

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030680.jpg

Once I drilled out the holes, I added a single screw to each. These screws were once part of the radio and now are another touch of the real thing

Are you ready? Do you have paper? Here we go....

I use a single internal USB cord!

OK, I just found out that I Have to finish this Mod by April 2nd. My wife and I are visiting my in-laws on April 3rd and we need to bring Cuda with.

No worries

TheGreatSatan

I don't think you'd actuall want it, being a Phenom and all ;)

Oh, I decided to get rid of one of the DVD drives and use a Blu-Ray ROM instead

TheGreatSatan

Here's how the radio came to me

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030577.jpg

I cut out the mopar logo

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030704.jpg

And added a coat of flat black

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030706.jpg

And I remembered that my brother-in-law watches TV and movies on his aging laptop, so I removed one of the DVD drives and added a Blu-Ray ROM. The Radeon HD 4830 has a DVI to HDMI adapter so with the use of a quality monitor he can watch the latest and greatest in Hi-Def

I've thought about this for a while and decided to start signing my mods. They are, in fact an art form, so it makes sense to sign them.

This is on the inside left panel

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030710.jpg

I mixed up some Loctite and smeared it on the Mopar logo

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030712.jpg

Then pressed it on the back panel

TheGreatSatan
03-02-2009, 11:59 AM
Yeah, Satan made it, then . . . . . . I don't remember.

Anyway,

I used Loctite again to secure the frame to the bezel I cut out. A little pressure is enough to ensure that it dries smoothly

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030760.jpg

I was about to add the PSU, but the screws I have are silver

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030761.jpg

So, I painted them to match

So after a few days of thinking I'm not sure what I want to do with the front bays. I still have the frame, but I kind of like adding a media reader/fan controller instead

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030780.jpg

Here's with the fan controller. It's the same one I used with Project Namesake

And here's with the LCD frame

The LCD display is garbage. When I turned on the computer it blinked and beeped again and again. Even the numbers were rubbish. Since I do like the idea of having a card reader and additional USB ports on the front panel I decided to gut it. I then merged the frame to the LCD cover

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030792.jpg

This is how it looks

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030793.jpg

TheGreatSatan
03-15-2009, 09:29 PM

And then while the computer is on playing the photos

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030798.jpg

So here's some pics with the lights off. All you can see is the Coolermaster V8lights

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030805.jpg

And more

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030809.jpg

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1030810.jpg

TheGreatSatan

I already do! And when you shut it down the sound is peeling away!

BTW, since the motherboard is MATX and not full ATX, I don't have enough PCI slots to add a wireless card so I picked up a USB one (http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=566)

I need help. I'm almost done, but there's something bugging me. I can see some of the wiring through the window and want to cover it maybe?? The video card is just above so mesh might be good here, but it needs to look appropriate. I considered tacking the mesh to the inside of the window too, what do you think?

Thin tubing that has a bend? Do they have that?

Remy
03-21-2009, 07:49 PM
Maybe you could use headers similar to these coming from both sides of the case??? Then you could sleeve the wires to look like spark plug wires and not necessarily have to hide them?

http://my-pc-nerd.com/mod/headers.jpg

nevermind1534
03-21-2009, 09:15 PM
He was saying bend it with heat, but I think some types of plastic pipe might come with a bend, unless they are bent by the person installing them.

TheGreatSatan
03-21-2009, 10:37 PM
I'm thinking maybe I could have it look like it's coming out from the V8 down past the video card and to the bottom of the case

TheGreatSatan
03-22-2009, 03:21 PM

http://my-pc-nerd.com/mod/eninge.jpg

Remy
03-22-2009, 03:40 PM
You could do this using braided sink hose (a cheap alternative to the real thing), and paint the fittings to give it an anodized finish.

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m238/creepy_02/breathermod.jpg

jdbnsn
03-22-2009, 04:37 PM
Those are some great ideas, and it's true that engines have lots of wires but the problem is those don't really look like engine wires. But since the header pipe idea was raised I can't help but think how awesome it would look to have some hot rod exhaust pipes coming out of that bottom region of the window and running back along the side of the case. And if you finished the tail ends of the pipes nicely, it would make a great excuse to toss in one of those small train set lamp oil smoke machines like in Doom3's Exhaust vent.

Oh, good point. I didn't think about that.

DonT-FeaR
03-23-2009, 02:54 AM
umm as someone said... pvc pipe... tape off one end... fill with fine sand then heat and bend :)

The boy 4rm oz
03-23-2009, 09:22 AM
The sand does help with the bend in PVC but I have found that it still tends to crack, split or buckle once it cools, not to mention it is quite easy to set on fire lol.

Why don't you take the easy way out. Extend the cables, sleeve them, cut entry holes behind the mobo plate and route them that way? Personally I think any sort of piping or mesh braiding would really be over the top.

TheGreatSatan
03-23-2009, 07:21 PM
I may just use yellow or orange heatshrink so they look more car-like

The boy 4rm oz
03-23-2009, 08:34 PM
I know you can get silver cable sleeving, may be an option, costs the same amount as the plastic stuff too.

jdbnsn
03-23-2009, 09:01 PM
Yeah, maybe a mixture of yellow or orange tubes (you could hack up an old extension cord for colored tubes) and some of the braided nylon (typical cable sleeving material) with a coat of chrome paint. That might look pretty hot hod'ish.

The boy 4rm oz
03-23-2009, 10:07 PM

I agree with TB4O, fully covering the ends of the cables would give a much cleaner look.
