Just bought one of those homemedics clock radios that display the time on the wall,
and I thought it would be a good idea to have a minature projector to display
your system status on the wall or onto a peice of plexi or glass.

I don't think they are easily hackable.

Cool, if this is successful we need to see a tutorial on it. +rep for the idea.

you could do something like this (http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-an-iPod-Video-Projector/)... with a small programmable lcd screen if its bright enough..

Do we know what controls the output? In theory, if the circuit that was hooked to the time telling module was replaced with, say, for example, fan RPM module, and the projection unit itself was untouched, wouldn't it in theory, at least, display the RPM's?
Or am I missing some incredibly simple detail that makes that un-doable?
Personally I think I'd like to have a (silly, yes!) module that somehow got the message from my YIM or other email client and projected a mail icon or something... no more refreshing, window switching, or annoying wierd graphics coming up while playing a game... just floating numbers :D
