View Full Version : Networking hell

I've just spent 2 hours trying to fix a network problem and the network was brought down... by a single computer.

A couple of days ago, we got a new router, a Linksys WRT610N to replace our Cisco 857W (WRT610N is a lot more easier to configure than the 857W). I got it mostly set up and I took down the network to get it to work with the new router. Before, we had a single cable from the router to a switch and it worked at 100mbps, it worked but it wasn't the best system. The new system, there is a single uplink to each of the rooms (whereas the rooms were plugged into the downstairs switch) and do to the WRT610N have a gigabit switch (which has been tested to 116MB/s), each room has a gigabit uplink (only 3 rooms need the uplinks, rest works on wireless).

The new system after a bit of fiddling was working great (except for the new modem, but that got solved the day after and that's working great... except when the power goes off) however overnight we had a brief power outage (enough to knock the safety switches) which also make the modem turn off until you hit a button at the front (which is very annoying). I was woken up to solve the problem and I turned on the modem. A few minutes later, the entire wired network (wireless was functioning fine) goes down and I can't work out why. I unplug it and the modem to see if that helps (it doesn't) then tried reseting the config to defaults (that didn't work either). Thinking the LAN ports on the router had blown, I unplugged everything and tested each port with a laptop, all working. Plugged in each LAN cable (Starting from room 3 down to room 1) and when I plug in room 1's switch, the wired network does the same thing. Eventually I found my father's server seemed to be spamming the network and was causing the router to strain under the load, one unplugging of the power cord and the network was up and running again.

Do any of you have networking hell stories to share?

I have a Vista PC (Look at my specs for more details), and a Samsung NC10 netbook running XP Home.

They were both running COMODO firewall software, and for the life of me, I could not get them to see each other, let alone share files. They wouldent even ping. Not even with COMODO disabled.

So I got pissed at it, chucked COMODO into the fire, and downloaded zonealarm. The Vista PC is installing as I speak.

Check if windows firewall is still enabled on either machine

Na, the windows firewalls were disabled as soon as COMODO hit the machines. Then COMODO messed up my sharing, so I switched back to zonealarm.

All works now :D

I've found comodo to be great if you want nothing to come in, even setting up exceptions don't work. However, for me, windows firewall isn't actually that bad.

My dad got a router and set it up. He forgot the password, and resetting the router didnt work for resetting to the default password. So in short, we have a dead brick that does nothing but make lots of pretty flashing lights and blinking green LEDs. Of course, it was Netgear.

The Belkin router here works just fine though. It just gets quite warm.

You have the hold the reset button for 5/10/15 seconds for netgears I believe.

mine as well. also lately, my wireless keeps stopping from working. weird, the lights are all on on the router, but I can't connect to it wirelessly every once and a while. Especially if I try to use windows media extender on my 360 wireless. stupid belkin routers. :(

EDIT: apparently I'm not the only one with serious issues with the belkin. great. glad I went with a cheapo router:dead:

when i was at school our network was all fed by one wire to the server, and for some reason the network would go down during break but return after. Only did this during the week, weekend it was fine,

me and the admin tried to find the problem, there was no software problem that we could see, so i decided next time it went down i would follow the wire to find the switch and see what was happeneing,

As it turned out there was a female teacher that wore high heal shoes, and loved to stand in the same spot in the staff room, put it this way,

heal tip + wire = NO NETWORK ACCESS!

it was soooo funny trying to explain to her she can't stand there until we get some new trunking and move the wire.

Apperently the wire was just layed under the carpet as a temp measure but it never got fixed!

the same place every day, she did it once and damaged the cable enough so you only needed to be very close to it rather than on it.

I couldn't belive it, nether could the admin till i told him to go check for himself, after that i got the privilage of helping rewire the network!

YAY, lots of trunking!
