Just found out about this:
http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931

Welcome, Seagate hard drive owners. A number of Seagate hard drives from the following families may become inaccessible when the host system is powered on:[FONT=Arial,Verdana,sans-serif] Barracuda 7200.11
DiamondMax 22
Barracuda ES.2 SATA
Once a drive has become affected the data becomes inaccessible to users but the data is not deleted. Seagate has isolated this issue to a firmware bug affecting drives from these families manufactured in December 2008.
Please use the following tools and instructions to determine if you have one of the affected products. If your drive is affected, we recommend that you update the firmware on the disk drive to prevent this condition
I have 2 drives affected by this, and I'm waiting for the results for the last one to be validated.

Hmm, my new ST3500320AS (http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207951) is on the list, and the F/W is SD15, so it recommends upgrading it...

I'm glad I got a WD.

Booted the disc and ran the identify thing (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/chrispollard/seagate/seagate1.jpg)

Selected option D (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/chrispollard/seagate/seagate2.jpg)

No such drive... (http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f341/chrispollard/seagate/seagate3.jpg)

Hmm, I think I might email Seagate about it.

Just beware, you'll probably loose all data off the drive.

Are you really? Who knows if WD have a hidden bug yet to be discovered... what I'm trying to say is, this could have happened to any company, but I'm glad they have support for it.

checking will loose the data or upgrading firmware?

Technically the data will be on the platters, just the drive won't be able to read it after upgrading the firmware (I'm not sure if this is 100% true, but this is what I remember from originally upgrading my 1TB drives), so remember to backup your data first before you upgrade.

thanks for the head up crenn +rep

dammit my drive is affected....

so if all went well then i burn the iso, run it and it would upgrade the firmware and i would still have all the data?

I don't think so, personally I wouldn't risk it.

wouldn't risk updating?

is this update meant to be used WHEN/IF it becomes affected? like a treatment not a preventative?

crenn

I'd update the drive, just not have data on it (or the data backed up to another drive).

i c what you mean now, i sent a pm cause i didn't read the response properly, you would format the drive, then update, then put back the data correct?

crenn
01-20-2009, 02:56 AM
That is partially correct. I may not format the drive, but I sure wouldn't have data that I wanted to keep on it.

accordibg to the site:
"The software and information in this article could be data destructive and/or render your hard drive inoperable if not followed carefully. It is always recommended to keep a backup of critical data"

Could be. So iy probably won't.

Anyway, you can't loose anything since loose isn't a verb.

You might lose data though...

I believe it's preventative, to stop the drive from disappearing in the first place.

I saw, one thing that concerns me is I have AD14 firmware.... but it's not listed as being affected, should I still try to update the firmware?

Not unless the drive was made in December

crenn

I doubt it was, but I can point out before they took the firmware down, AD14 was listed as affected.

Not unless the drive was made in December

how can you tell by the way? all i can really see from the date code is that mine was made in 2008.

my date code is 08367

and it is for sure only ones made in December that are a problem?

Hello. How may I help you?
crenn: Hi, I'm trying to find out if I need to apply the new firmware update to my 2 seagate 1TB drives. They have AD14 firmware on them currently.
Techie: Serials?
crenn: <Serial removed>
crenn: <Serial removed>
Techie: just a second
crenn: No problem
Techie: http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207951
crenn: I have that document open, but it no longer states if drives with AD14 need the firmware
Techie: They do
crenn: Ok
crenn: So my drives do need the firmware, just to confirm?
Techie: when did you flash for the AD14?
crenn: When I first got thedrives
crenn: Almost a year ago I think
Techie: Yes, flash the drives
crenn: 26 June 2008
crenn: Ok
crenn: One more thing
Techie: Sure
crenn: I also have a ST31000333AS, do you know if this drive is going to require a firmware update at a later stage?
Techie: serial?
crenn: <Serial removed>
Techie: That needs it asap
crenn: There is no availble firmware on the seagate website
crenn: http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207957
Techie: not yet, it is in validation
crenn: Do you have an estimate for when it will be released?
Techie: I am hoping Friday(tomorrow
crenn: But it's already Friday! (Here in Australia anyway)
crenn: Anyway, thank you very much for your time
Techie: Oh, thats right, ha, well I am where the water flows the other way, give it saturday =)
crenn: lol
crenn: Have a good evening then!
Techie: u3@
crenn: u3@?
Techie: u 2 ha its end of day
crenn: Ah ok
crenn: Anyway, cya and thanks again for your help
Techie: NP, take care!
crenn: You too

This is true. my internet at my house has been down  but the guy I talked to on the phone about it was very chill. Always refreshing to have a good conversation with someone who knows what they are talking about and is friendly :)

Finally upgraded all my drives' firmware. Didn't even backup (I decided to risk it as backing up those drives would take days, maybe upto a couple of weeks... long story) but all my data is still readable.

no but it's that i just bought an Seagate hard drive about 2 weeks ago and this is the first i hear about it so I'm kind pissed and i can't check the model number because it's at a freinds where we are making black magic
*note it's an 1 TB Seagate

crenn
02-12-2009, 07:48 PM
The newer seagate HDDs shouldn't have this problem. My friend bought a new 1TB seagate about a month ago, but it had the latest firmware on it, so you'll probably not be affected.

02-12-2009, 07:53 PM
true but i don't know how long memory express had the hdd

pcclan
02-12-2009, 07:59 PM
and so it my freind says it's on the list and we have to download it when we finish it

That is the same firmware that my friend has, you're not affected by this.
