I plan to have my own website pretty soon and I need suggestions on who to host it with. It will be a small collection of pages, probably never more than 50, that includes the general stuff anybodies homepage would. A family and friends site and section, info on what I do and potentially a page about my part time business, pages about my worklogs, and the general 'first personal webpage' schtick. I don't really need multiple domains, don't need email hosting, bandwidth can be capped as long as I have the option to upgrade the cap later. Assume general number of pictures from a few worklogs and bragging pics for family if you need to calculate a size number.
Anyone got any favorites? The company designer suggested 1 and 1, they start at $3.95 a month.
1&1 is ok.. I'm using 000webhost right now.. completely free.

For a nominal fee i will allow you to tattoo your website on my left ass check. the right ass check is reserved for thinkgeek.com but the lower thigh is still open for business.
I can't promise alot of traffic.

what fee is nominal? just curious. I would probably charge an arm and a leg (no pun intended :P )
as for web hosting, I have used 1&1 and liked them.

I'm using the aforementioned 000webhost and siteground. From what it sounds like, 000webhost would be a good fit for you.
I'm also using DynDNS for my personal website, since I've got it hosted on one of my nix boxes.
I should also mention that the $3.95/month is most likely only valid if you sign up for two years and pay up front. I think I'm paying $5.95/month with siteground, but had to pay for two years upfront in order to get that price.
I'll be looking into other hosting providers in the near future, as siteground is meh to average.
