View Full Version : Watercooled Microfly

I want to water cool a mircofly. Not because it's needed, but because it's cool and it's the first step in my mods to this case. What I am asking is if anyone has done this, and what parts would be best for a SFF system?

Also I was thinking of putting a res either in the top 5.25 drive bay, and the pump in the 3.5" bay, or making a custom res and mounting a pump underneith the drive bays.

I was thinking of using either two 40mm rads (one on each side panel) or a dual 80 tucked up under the drive bays with two blower style fans forcing air out either side. Any suggestions?

:::sorry to those who might have read this seeing 4 posts by me. Posting off of my blackberry is a pain, i'll try to refrain in the future!:::

its not seen as good practice to bump within 1 hour...

also use your edit button so your not quad posting...

now onto the good stuff.

whats your budget, and what do you want to cool? and are you wanting silence or performance? i'm thinking silence since you said its not for temps.

if its just the cpu then i would just get this kit for its compact size and the fact that everything is included.

its a great kit from a great company.

Well, the kits for two reasons, the first is for keeping a small case cool, and the second is to do so relatively silently. Second I would like to keep things under 200, but i can spend up to 250!

EDIT:::
the biggest issue with that type of radiator is that I have exactly 120mm between the psu and the side of the case.

not sure if you mind but the rad can mount on the outside with its "rad box"

there are 40 mm and 80mm rads but they are expensive for what you get and 40mm and 80mm fans by nature are loud.

True, I can mount on the outside, it would fit that way, humm... I can take a look!!!

I was hoping to keep everything inside with minimal outside appearences, however i have been reading about project rouge and i'm starting to think about possibly doing a case mod to put a dual 92mm rad up front in the bezel.

if your new to water cooling, even if your not, i think that kit is just about perfect for what you need. its only 2 components (pump/cpu block and rad/res) and the good thing is once you get hooked to water cooling you can take apart the pump and water block and buy an after market top (XSPC Res top (http://www.jab-tech.com/XSPC-Acrylic-Reservoir-for-Laing-DDC-pr-4123.html)) have a have one of the best 12v pumps out there.

Very true!! That would allow me to expand in the future! So that will probably be whats coming home! I just grabbed the case, and the issue i have is the motherboard tray comes up right below the rear 120mm fan, however there is about 50mm of free space before it hits anything, so i can use that to pass the hoses through.

Thanks for the help Spawn!!

no problem, glad to help!

here is some more helpful info on water cooling from a fellow water cooler on another forum.

http://www.ocforums.com/showpost.php?p=5951344&postcount=1

here is even more, again from Conumdrum. some of it doesn't apply to you but still good info to have.

You want some info? I'll be glad to help you. Some stuff to learn and don't rush, glad you asked. There is good stuff and bad stuff to buy, basic rules (physics) we have to follow, and how to install it all.

Best bet is to get a drink and read all the stickies here and in the links I provided, look at all the rigs especially your case or planned case. Spend a few days. Here is a quick primer I keep to cut n paste and places to look.

Okay! Great to have you here. You need to research and learn about WC first. We'd rather you spend 2-3 days learning than spending 3 weeks with basic questions that we shouldn't need to worry about.

For your benefit please spend a few days reading a LOT. Here and at the busiest places for WC masters. Guys who have done it for YEARS at OC forums and xtreme forums. It took me a while (I was OCing on air, aftermarket stuff, bios settings, best chipsets etc etc) to learn the language and the tricks to a easy install.

Don't expect miracles, or SUPER DOOPER over clocks. What you will get is a quiet system that can handle OC to the max of your hardware IF you buy quality and buy smart. And minor maintenance too, a bonus for the water cooler.

Also while there please read on case mods etc. The radiators are not for small cases, the pumps and hose routing, wire management and other things are important to understand. Google your planned case and the word water-cooled in one line. You might get lucky.

IF you just cool your CPU and your NB if you want, you can get by with a 120.2 sized radiator (RAD). And MAYBE fit in inside depending on your mod skillz. You want to cool your GPU too, you'll need a 120.3 sized rad, and it won't fit inside. The rear external rad really works great. No matter what your adding 15lbs to your PC, maybe 20lbs.

Once you got an idea of what is good/bad then start getting your system for WC put together and we'll be glad to help.

This looks like it's gonna turn into a very cool (pardon the pun) mod. There was a water cooled Microfly mod started here a while back but nothing ever came of it. Good luck.

That's awesome! I had no clue about that combo. I wonder why more people aren't doing this!!. I will gladly use this kit as a base system, then add parts as i see fit!

for a microfly i would just pick up a swiftech h20-120 compact kit, comes with the pump/block, and the res and the rad are all in one. the picture in like post 3 is the actualy kit, comes with everything you need in a 2 step process.

Yea I will be getting that one when I get around to finishing that project. Right now i'm working on another, decided to start case modding a slightly bigger case.

Hello all! It's been a while right!

Since February I haven't touched a thing on any of my projects. I have been extrememly bussy with school/work and over seas for a good majority of the time. I will be once again making an attempt at finishing this watercooled PC.

Right now here's my current thoughts.

I wasnt to replace the clear sides with mesh. This mesh will be bent out about 1" allowing for two radiators to be positioned on either side with minimal impact on inner space.

THere will not be any fans mounted directly onto the radiators. I will custom make the top pannel and into it I will fit 4 high speed 92mm or larger fans, which will be controlled by some form of controller to keep noise down. the front pannel will more than likely become another custom piece. I am in the works of getting 1" stand off's. To this I will mount a custom piece of acrylic, that will fit the front. Around the front of the machine will be the res, wich will be a custom piece made in the shape of b.

the pump will be mounted inside the case, in the spare space under the cdrom/3.5" bay. to save more space i'll probably mount the hdd in the 3.5" floppy bay, since I'm not a fan of floppies anyway. This brings me to the back where I'll put a standard atx style psu with shortened cables, and another high speed fan blowing air into the case.

I should be picking up work on this within the next month, depending on school and work.

Thanks!

Well, all right then. :) The Microfly was my first "real" case, and I can't wait to see how you do this. We'll expect a worklog.

Yea! haha! I have been mocking up again, and I've been wondering how i'm going to stuff 2" deep radiators into this case....So i'm in search of something in the .75 to 1" deep cooling devices.

upon further investigation I found a few dual 120mm radiators that are shallow enough to fit in my limited space. SO it looks like I'll be running two dual 120mm radiators.
