Hello this is the work log for Black Magic, this is a computer for member pcclan, we are both working towards it being complete by the end of next month, it is being built out of an old toolbox, using these spec's
*ASUS P5Q SE/R LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard
*Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2
*Sunbeam PSU-BKS580-US 580W ATX Power Supply
*SABRENT SBT-SP6C 5.1 Channels PCI Interface Sound Card
*XFX 8600GT
*Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E7200 2.53GHz
*LG DVD-Rom, black
*Seagate 1Tb Harddrive
*Cooler Master X Dream 4 CPU Cooler
*Pre-Wired Bulgin Vandal Resistant Illuminated Switches 16mm - Sleeved
here it is in sketchup, the harddrive is the small black thing under the dvd-drivehttp://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/sketchup.jpg
and here's some pics of the toolbox before we started[http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/comp/IMG00029.jpg

Ill leave it to my partner Pcclan to say a few words about the project

the design was a no brainier when you look how big the case is and how hard it would be to cut so many holes so we made a choose to put the dvd drive out of the side and we are going to sand it then paint it black

Looks like you have a plan, but do both of you have your tetanus shots? :dead:
I'm guessing mesh will cover the side where the drawers were?
mods-middle-name
02-02-2009, 07:34 PM
Actually, the side will be all plexi, with a cut out for the cd drive and a fan

02-04-2009, 10:34 PM
We also just last night decided on water cooling it with these parts
*Black Ice Pro II Compact High Performance Radiator - Black
- Fitting Size 1/2" OD
*Danger Den DD-CPX-Pro 12V Pump
- Fitting Size 1/2" Barb for 1/2" ID tube
*Danger Den Brass Tubing Plug 1/2"
*AquaXtreme MP-05 PRO Limited Edition Universal CPU Water Block
-½" High Flow fittings
*ClearFLEX 60 Tubing 1/2" ID / 3/4" OD
*Feser View Active UV Dye - 50 ml - UV Red
*YATE LOON 120mm Case Fan - D12SH-124B - UV Blue Frame with 4 Blue leds - High Speed
*1/2" T Line for 1/2" ID Tubing - Black
Also i have decided to try and make a custom res
What do you guy's think?
mods-middle-name
02-05-2009, 12:31 AM
I was actually thinking about doing a res that will go on the side of the case behind the motherboard, it will be a waterfall res in which liquid will enter in the top and will fall down stairs to the bottom
pcclan
02-09-2009, 11:06 AM
we will update as soon as we can get started on the case we have to find a place to work on it first and i think i have found a place so keep you hope's up we get a place to work
FuzzyPlushroom
02-09-2009, 10:01 PM
Well, I think two things so far - this could definitely be awesome, and if you can afford another $20 or so you ought to get a better PSU for that rig. Looking forward to updates - repurposed stuff rocks.

Ok so we got a little bit done today, we got the optical drive/ hard drive cage mounted
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/DSCF2935.jpg
then we started to try and drill out the top fan hole, but it was taking to long so we stopped
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/DSCF2934.jpg
we are going to try an angle grinder to cut out the rest of the holes.
thats all for now
mods-middle-name
02-11-2009, 04:51 PM
Got some more done today but first, wow is it white out there and Damn is it cold
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/DSCF2936.jpg
got the fan hole cut and the fan installed
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/DSCF2937.jpg
a shot from the under side
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/DSCF2938.jpg
and thats all we decided to do, until we get the motherboard were not going to cut anymore, because as we know not all motherboards are the same size, so we aren't going to take the chance of messing the holes up.

small little update, i got the hole for the fill port drilled. Then i got an interesting phone call from pcclan, this project may or may not be on hold now as his family was evicted today. So im really not sure whats going on as i haven't been able to reach him since.

Small bit of news. My pint of acrylic cement came today so I'm going to start building the res as soon as possible. Now for the odd bit, I haven't been able to contact Pcclan since the 13th so I'm a little bit worried bout him and the future of this project because after all this is his computer. Who knows what the future holds.

Well I hate to hear that anything bad happened to a fellow modder, I hope everything works out alright. Personally I'd bet that if something bad did happen Pcclan would get a big kick out of getting a finished case anyways.

yeah hope he is ok...
mods-middle-name
02-22-2009, 01:31 AM
yea, i hope he's ok too. Plus We've only acquired the cpu, dvd drive, hard drive, and video card. heres a quick cardboard model of the res i whipped up, http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/DSCF2940.jpg
tell me what you think.
DonT-FeaR
02-22-2009, 04:39 AM
i wonder how you will construct that... but looks cool
mods-middle-name
02-22-2009, 06:34 AM
it will be very simple actually, the front and black pieces of plexi are 9" X 7" the sides are 9" X 2" the top and bottom walls are 6 1/2" X 2" they all will go in between the front and back pieces, and then the angled pieces inside are 4" X 2". Its all very simple
DonT-FeaR
02-22-2009, 07:34 AM
lol.... i know like how to do it... but was wondering how YOU would do it.... every1 varies
billygoat333
02-23-2009, 01:24 PM
thats pretty cool on the res idea, hope it works! as for the hole, a file is pretty cheap (get a round one) and will smooth that out a lot nicer! (or can also use the channel idea, quicker and easier I guess :P ) cool idea for a case! +rep will watch this to see how the res comes out! kind of reminds me of those bubble water toys. http://image.orientaltrading.com/otcimg/39_1780.jpg
best picture I could find, they make big ones of those things too but I can't seem to find an image! grr.

Ok so Pcclan contacted me just now, he's fine but not in Edmonton right now and about four days from being kicked out of high school. anyways, I got the plexi marked out, hers one of the sides and an inner piece marked out
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/DSCF2941.jpg
then heres the front and back pieces marked out
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/DSCF2943.jpg
heres one of all the plexi i might have to use
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/DSCF2945.jpg
and finally one of the Acrylic cement
http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm81/895232/DSCF2946.jpg
Now...it's my FIRST time making a res and i am wondering how to get straight clean cuts through the plexi, i have a table saw with a plywood blade and a dremel, I'd be willing to by a product if it were to help. Please help
rendermandan
02-24-2009, 01:13 AM
Your best bet would be to rough cut the sheets with your table saw, then clean up the eges with a router using a straight bit. This will give you the cleanest/smoothest edge for glueing the pieces together. You might want to do a flame polish on the edges before you glue them too.
How thick is that plexi you are using? If its too thin you might run into some trouble.
mods-middle-name
02-24-2009, 01:31 AM
The plexi is a few mm under 1/2"
985323
02-27-2009, 11:37 PM
yea, OK so Pcclan transferred me the money today so i can order the rest of the parts tonight aka the motherboard, memory and psu. I'm having a bit of trouble cutting the plexi for the res right now, i tried a hacksaw and it gave a nice clean cut but the edge wasn't all that straight, and i'm unable to get at the table saw right this moment as we park our summer cars in the workshop during winter so I'm not sure what to do. Well that's it until either i cut and assemble the res or the parts come in...which ever happens first i guess.

Sorry for lack of updates, i started cutting the rad hole in the top of the case, as for the rest of the stuff... need to get a new hdd as the Seagate 1Tb harddrive went boom. My way of saying it no longer works and cannot be replaced as the sata port itself has fallen off. so thats a definet setback.

get it warrantied if you've got nothing important on it. I had my 500GB Seagate crap out on me, and I'm not warranting it because I've got data I need to get off. Needless to say I wont be ordering another Seagate drive, my next one will be a WD to go with the WD400 I already have

Completley agree, i plan on heading back to said place of purchase so ill ask if i can get it replaced, also remember this is not for me, all "my" computers run WD hdd's

04-10-2009, 11:00 PM
Ok so new hard drive aquired, old one couldnt be replaced as it had "physical damage" to it so there goes $119.00 down the drain. But it could be worse, so far i have cut out half the rad hole and started drilling the holes for the motherboard. Still need to cut the hole for the psu in the back drill the hole for the power switch then prime it and paint it, cut the plexi side, install the componants and there you go Pcclan will have a computer again. Then when we get up the money it will be water cooled and i will finish the custon waterfall res. Until then.
Will.
